WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

GAFI mulls changes to the Companies Act

Good afternoon all you wonderful people, and happy Monday. Read on for all the latest below.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

Could a revamped Companies Act be on the table? The General Authority for Investment and Freezones (GAFI) plans to prepare a revamped companies law to replace the Companies Act, GAFI boss Hossam Heiba told Hapi Journal. This comes as part of efforts to keep up with developments in the investment arena seen over the past few years and to provide a legislative framework that aligns with the increasing reliance on electronic documents. The authority is expected to put the draft legislation up for public consultation after Ramadan, he said.

Unfamiliar with the Companies Act? The law “outlines the regulatory framework for the incorporation, management, and dissolution of companies in Egypt, including governance aspects like shareholder rights and board responsibilities.” You can check out the full text of the law on GAFI’s official website.

What can we expect from the new law? The new law will focus on the incorporation procedures for companies, post-incorporation services — such as documenting board meetings or general assemblies — and recognizing electronic procedures and documents, which are still not recognized under the current legislation, Heiba revealed. The new law will also select a single authority through which companies can register their establishment — a process that currently spans eight different entities.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

Strong US jobs report fuels strong USD amid dimming hope for rate cuts: News that the US added 256k jobs in December released Friday boosted the USD in the early hours of trading Monday, with the GBP falling to a 14-month low against the greenback to USD 1.213 and the EUR falling to near-parity with the USD for the first time in over two years. Global equities also fell, with observers noting that the strong jobs data coupled with persistent high inflation linked to high energy prices could presage a single or possibly no further rate cuts from the US Federal Reserve in 2025. Closer to home, Qatar has presented Israel and Hamas with what it says is the “final draft” of a ceasefire agreement to end Israel’s bloody war on Gaza. The agreement is currently being considered by both sides, with a Palestinian source close to the talks calling the news “very promising.”

AND OVER IN BUSINESS NEWS- Apple’s GBP 1.5 bn lawsuit over App Store fees kicks off today in the UK, the first of several class action lawsuits against tech’s biggest firms set to take place in the country over the coming period. The case alleges that the tech giant charges “excessive and unfair” commissions of up to 30% on App Store purchases, while also using its market dominance to force developers to distribute apps solely through its store.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

The tech that's shaping tomorrow

CES 2025 is giving us a glimpse of the future, showcasing products that range from practical to utterly insane. Whether you’re into gaming, home tech, or health innovation, this year had something for everyone — many tech sites are declaring their top favorites, but here’s a roundup of what gadgets made our list.

XReal threw their hat into the augmented reality ring with One Pro AR glasses. With adjustable virtual screen sizes, ultrawide PC mirroring, and a cementable screen mode, this USD 600 innovation pushed the boundaries of immersive tech, though its field of view remains limited.

Ozlo Sleepbuds are bringing an end to restless nights. Designed by former Bose engineers, Ozlo’s buds have implemented adaptive soundscapes and white noise tracks to lull you to sleep, and a secure, lightweight fit for maximum comfort. Setup glitches and the absence of sleep tracking hold them back slightly, but the company plans to roll out software updates to fix both issues.

Accessibility took a leap forward. The Lotus Accessibility Ring offered users with limited mobility the power to control appliances with a point and click mechanism. Its magnetic switch covers and minimal charging needs made it practical and travel friendly.

TCL made premium TVs affordable. The QM6K series introduced QD mini-LED technology with Dolby Vision and integrated Onkyo speakers, starting at just USD 749. With sizes up to 98 inches, TCL made luxury visuals accessible to a broader audience.

Bending the rules of battery tech is Singaporean brand Flint. Flint’s flexible rechargeable paper batteries are a sustainable alternative to lithium-ion counterparts. Made from cellulose, these batteries are biodegradable, fully flexible, and compact enough for smartwatches or even smartphone straps. All in the name of reducing e-waste and carbon emissions to pave the way for greener tech.

…and Jackery’s Solar shingles don't just look good. These solar tiles mimic common roof architecture, and with over 25% cell conversion efficiency and durability to handle extreme weather, they’re as reliable as they are stylish.

Lenovo dominated the handheld gaming scene. The Legion Go S delivered a Windows powered gaming experience with AMD’s Ryzen Z2 Go chip, outperforming Valve’s Steam Deck at USD 500. The Legion Go 2 took it further with detachable controllers and a next gen Ryzen Z2 Extreme chip, cementing Lenovo’s place as a leader in mobile gaming.

MacBook Air, meet your competition: ASUS's Zenbook A14. Weighing just 2.2 pounds — lighter than the Macbook Air — with a 14-inch OLED screen and up to 32 hours of battery life, this laptop is a serious contender. It also has a wide range of ports — USB-A, USB-C, HDMI, and a headphone jack — and one-handed opening. While the Snapdragon X chips limit compatibility with some older Windows apps, the Zenbook A14 is a standout for its sleek, lightweight laptop with all the right specs.

No need for a pinch of salt when the Electric salt spoon is in hand. The spoon sends a tiny electric current through the spoon to make low-sodium dishes taste saltier, without any of the health worries. There are four levels of saltiness to choose from to appeal to everyone’s taste. This gadget is only available to Japan and is finicky to handle, but is worth mentioning as a main attraction in the consumer electronics section.

But overall, Nvidia stole the spotlight. The RTX 50 series graphics cards delivered AI-powered performance at more affordable rates, setting new standards for frame rates and graphical fidelity in PC gaming. The RTX 5070 boasts the same capabilities as Nvidia’s heavyweight roster at a third of the price.

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT

A peek inside the small-town life

📺 A heartwarming show that finds value in simplicity. Virgin River follows Melinda “Mel” Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge), a nurse practitioner and midwife who takes a job in the remote town of Virgin River in an attempt to make a fresh start and escape from her painful past. She quickly becomes entangled in the lives of the quirky residents — including the charming Jack (Martin Henderson) — and faces some unexpected challenges. The show’s sixth season provides more dramatic story lines that test friendship, love, and family ties.

Tiptoeing around the spoilers… After a 15-month wait, season six dazzles viewers with a long-awaited wedding, a life-altering trial, family reunions, health troubles, pregnancies, and a whole lot of small-town chaos. We’re seeing a more intense narrative here than in the previous seasons, with a balance between heartwarming moments and higher stakes for the characters.

This is a show that helps you unwind. The narrative is fairly run-of-the-mill, mimicking the reality of a small town where people live simply and everyone knows everyone. Virgin River isn’t for times when you’re looking for an eventful, edge-of-your-seat kind of watch. It’s a Hallmark-esque watch that provides comfort with calm, realistic conflicts.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can watch the series on Netflix or catch the season 6 trailer on YouTube (runtime: 1:47).

EAT THIS TONIGHT

The Mexican flavours are poppin’ at Mexican Corn

🌽 Get ready to pop by Mexican Corn, where the name says it all. Right in the heart of New Cairo, this lively spot dishes up Mexican-inspired dishes that are as zesty and colorful as their namesake ingredients. Whether you’re a fan of sweet kernels or simply craving a fiesta of flavors, Mexican Corn has something for everyone.

(Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links to external sources.)

We started off light with the guacamole and dip. It tastes as it should — zesty and creamy with a few tomato and onion pieces thrown in, and paired with crunchy corn chips. It was the perfect palate-prepper for the rest of the meal.

Next, we had to dive into the Mexican Corn Bar. It’s a customizable bowl of corn topped with all the toppings your heart might desire. We opted to recreate a taco bowl, loading it with grilled chicken, kidney beans, pickled jalapeños, pico de gallo, and, of course, sweet, juicy corn as the base. All of that got a generous drizzle of cilantro lime mayo, which was light and tangy, similar to our dip entree. If corn isn’t your thing, don’t worry — they’ve got baked potatoes available as an alternative base.

Next, we hit the classics — burritos, tacos, and quesadillas. First up were the Birria Quesadillas, flat warm tortillas oozing with cheese and filled with rich, tender shredded beef. The meat was braised with a smoky depth and slight kicks of chili and spices that made each bite equally intense and tasty.

The Chicken Burritos followed, and they didn’t disappoint. As all burritos are, it was packed with marinated chicken, mexican rice, mixed cheese, red beans and tangy pico de gallo, drizzled with chipotle mayo and all wrapped in a soft tortilla. Each bite was a perfect balance of textures and flavors, and while a bit messy, the overall taste didn't disappoint.

Last in the lineup were the Shrimp Tacos, which brought a touch of the sea to the table. The tacos were filled to the brim with well-seasoned shrimp, shredded cabbage, diced mango, and a drizzle of chipotle mayo — all in a soft corn tortilla. The combination was a mix of sweet, tangy, and mildly spicy notes — almost a bite of oncoming summer.

But the real star of the meal was the Beef Picanha Steak. Expertly grilled where it was tender and flavorful, with a buttery richness that practically melted in our mouths. Paired with a side of Mexican rice — fluffy, fragrant, and seasoned with subtle hints of cumin and tomato — it was the kind of dish that lingers in your memory long after the meal.

It’s for everyone: Whether you're a corn connoisseur or just love exploring bold Mexican flavors, this spot is worth checking out. Don’t forget, you can dine in, take away, or get your meal delivered straight to your door in New Cairo.
