WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

THIS EVENING: Interest in sodium cyanide gaining traction as Austria’s Petrochemical Holding Company and Czech company Draslovka are planning to jointly establish a sodium cyanide facility in Egypt

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, and happy Wednesday. In today’s issue, we’ll be talking about Discord and whether TikTok’s restrictions on influencers promoting Ozempic is harming the diabetes community that uses the medicine.

In case you’ve forgotten, we’re in line for a long weekend starting tomorrow. The public, private, and banking sectors will have the day off tomorrow in observance of Sinai Liberation Day, according to statements from the cabinet, central bank, and EGX .

** EnterprisePM Egypt will also be taking a break from your inboxes starting tomorrow, but we will be back in your inbox at our customary time with all the latest on Sunday.

And we’ve got another short work week ahead: The public and private sectors will be off on Sunday, 5 May and Monday, 6 May in observance of Labor Day and Sham El Nessim, according to a cabinet statement.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

More interest in sodium cyanide: Austria’s Petrochemical Holding Company and Czech company Draslovka are planning to jointly establish a sodium cyanide facility in Egypt, with delegations from the two companies discussing their plans earlier today with Trade and Industry Minister Ahmed Samir, according to a ministry statement. The facility would see initial investments of USD 160 mn in its first phase, the ministry said.

SOUND SMART: Sodium cyanide is the solution commonly used for gold extraction from low-grade ore, and can be used to extract other metals, including copper, zinc, and silver.

Not the first time foreign players have eyed sodium cyanide in Egypt:Last month, German cyanide producer CyPlus submitted an investment proposal to set up a USD 150 mn factory that would produce 30k tonnes of sodium cyanide per annum, while another Austrian company separately submitted a proposal for a USD 120 mn factory. It remains unclear whether that Austrian company is the Petrochemical Holding Company.

Foreign investors are falling in love with Egypt again… Foreign investors we speak with (debt, equity, and strategic alike) have a growing appetite for Egypt. They’re buying into local debt, eyeing promising shares, and committing bns of USD to both new ventures here and the growth of their existing businesses. They like the Egypt story that’s taking shape after the float of the EGP, and our competitive advantages are clear to many of them: We’re a massive consumer opportunity and the regional export hub of tomorrow.

…but here at home, our community is in a rut. The enthusiasm gap between domestic business leaders and global investors is stark.

We’d all do well to remember: It’s a chicken-and-egg kind of thing. Foreign strategic investors will be reluctant to commit capital here until they see Egyptian businesses leading the way.

The Enterprise Optimism Forum 2024 will do exactly what it says on the tin: Spark conversations about a future that we think is much brighter than so many in our community feel right now. Think of it as much-needed shock therapy combined with an early, actionable roadmap for those of us who are “long Egypt.”

We’ll be talking with you about the agenda over the coming couple of weeks. It features speakers from Egypt and abroad who are future-proofing their businesses and angling to capture tomorrow’s opportunities — and who aren’t afraid to answer some tough questions.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

It’s a mixed bag of news today but Tesla’s shares recovery and the Senate Bill update are the focus of the international media. The vehicle company’s shares recovered 13% after the promise of more affordable EVs by Q4 2024. Despite a reported 9% drop in profit earlier this year, Tesla shares are seeing an uptick after CEO Elon Musk promised cheaper EVs by end of year. Car manufacturers have been continuously slashing EV prices to encourage demand, and it seems that Tesla is following suit after a 42% decrease in stock prices. Tuesday night saw the US Senate pass a long-suffering bill to approve USD 95.3 bn in aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan on a vote of 79 to 18. US President Joe Biden is expected to sign the bill as soon as it makes its way to his desk. Part of the USD 26.4 bn earmarked for Israel includes an unspecified amount for “civilians in conflict zones, including Gaza.” (Bloomberg | CNBC | NYT)

** CATCH UP QUICK on the top stories from today’s EnterpriseAM:

  • The draft budget is here: Yesterday, Finance Minister Mohamed Maait delivered his budget statement to the House of Representatives, giving us the first proper look at the draft state and public government budgets (pdf) for the next fiscal year.
  • Imported gas, whether piped from Israel or from shipments of LNG, are becoming an increasingly important part of our energy mix: The government is reportedly in negotiations with yet another firm to lease a floating regasification unit as we look towards ramping up LNG imports.
  • B Investments to soon snap up a 70% stake in OFH + Al Ahly Capital Holding acquires 51% stake in Easy Lease: Private equity firm B Investments’ board yesterday approved a decision to increase the company’s share capital ahead of its share swap agreement with Orascom Financial Holding. Meanwhile, Al Ahly Capital Holding, the private equity arm of the National Bank of Egypt, has purchased 51% of local financial leasing services provider Easy Lease from El Sewedy Capital.

🌤️ TOMORROW’S WEATHER- Expect temperature to cool down in Cairo tomorrow to a high of 35°C and low of 21°C, according to our favorite weather app.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Discord’s CEO talks up a “smaller” internet. PLUS: TikTok is attacking Ozempic promotionary content on its platform

Could the internet be getting too big? With all of the problems and discontent fomented bythe internet, Discord has emerged as an intimate, friendly online ‘hangout’ for people with common interests.Since its creation in 2015, the platform has been quite common within the gaming community specifically, seeing as it was previously used as live voice chat while playing.

“There’s a need for more cozy, intimate spaces where people can spend quality time with their friends away from the broadcast performative stuff that we see a lot of,” explains Jason Citron, co-founder and CEO of Discord in an interview with The Verge — which is exactly what the communication platform intends to provide.

Discord calls these spaces ‘servers’ where the users are in control. Citron told The Verge that their intention from the very first day was “to create tools that give people the capability to design their own space.” In terms of naming, design, permissions, or channel type, users are able to customize their server. When users wanted to push the maximum number of people in a server, Discord did exactly that. They cater the evolution of the app to the users’ wants or needs.

As the platform continues to grow, safety concerns follow. After claims of child grooming and abduction cases occurring through Discord, Citron attended a Senate Judiciary Committeehearing in January regarding child safety online. He mentioned that they were working with Thorn, a tech company, to create an automated tool that detects and removes predatory conversations. According to the NY time’s report on the hearing, Discord reported almost 17k cases of child abuse material to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

The chat-room bodyguard. Another attempt at keeping the kids safe on the app is the Teen Safety Assist feature that can be enabled on the app. “They have a sidekick that’s checking out the conversation, seeing what they’re doing, and giving them tips on how to keep themselves safe or report things,” Citron told The Verge.

We’re well into the internet’s Ozempic moment. TikTok is trying to slow down the trend: In a bid to curb the trend of weight loss related content — and harmful behaviors associated with managing weight — TikTok is rolling out new community guidelines set to take effect next month. The guidelines note that the platform “[does] not allow showing or promoting disordered eating or any dangerous weight loss behaviors.” These new community guidelines come in addition to TikTok’s branded content policy, which also prohibits branded content promoting weight loss products or services.

TikTok is typically where internet users — especially Gen Z — go for unfiltered discussions and as a source for their own version of field research, Bloomberg notes. Plenty of content on the platform has centered on weight loss drugs like Novo Nordisk A/S' Wegovy and Eli Lilly & Co.'s Zepbound, as well as experimental drugs that remain in clinical trials.

This isn’t the first time TikTok has attempted to address these issues: Last year, TikTok moved to temporarily ban certain accounts that were posting about diabetes medications like Ozempic. However, some users believe the new policies are unclear and open the door for inconsistencies in enforcement, Bloomberg says.

The upshot: If it’s not allowed on TikTok, it’ll be allowed elsewhere: Content creators are exploring alternative platforms, such as Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube, where they might not face the same type of content restrictions, Bloomberg says. They argue that the restrictions may shortchange a growing community seeking support for conditions that are usually marginalized. “This is 100% discrimination against people with obesity, people with type 2 diabetes, people with chronic conditions, people with health conditions,” Dave Knapp, who posts about news related to GLP-1 drugs, told Bloomberg.

Capote’s women as you’ve never seen them before

📺 ON THE TUBE TONIGHT-
(all times CLT)

There’s no shortage of back-stabbing and rivalries in the second installment of the Feud Anthology. The show, Capote vs The Swans, is all about infiltrating high society and betrayal when Truman Capote, author of In Cold Blood, befriends New York society’s most elite women, to the point where secrets they would’ve taken to the grave are spilled, but little do they know that he’s writing all about for his next work of “fiction.”

Based on Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era by Laurence Leamer, the show has all the makings of a true masterpiece of historical fiction. Leamer captured the glamorous lives of the women involved in a way that would make you suspect he had been there with them. That same juicy intel is translated to the show where Capote’s downfall is manifested for all to see.

How far will people go for their status and reputation? Probably further than you think, as the eight-part series shows us. There’s also a star-studded cast featuring Naomi Watts, Demi Moore, Diane Lane, Tom Hollander, and Chloë Sevigny — each delivering stellar performances.

You can catch all the socialite drama on Disney+ or catch the trailer (watch, runtime: 2:46).

🌮 EAT THIS TONIGHT-

Get in on the taco game at Dos Bros. If you’re in the mood for a quick Mexican meal you can find one at this restaurant’s Tex-Mex decaled truck in One Golden Square New Cairo.

We put on our sombreros and dug right in: There were burritos, quesadillas, tacos, and enchiladas — so we opted to try one of each. We ordered the pulled meat (Birria) tacos, chicken burritos, jalapeno poppers and chicken quesadillas.

The food was filling as it was delicious: Birria is not a common dish that we can get right inCairo, but we feel that we may finally stand corrected. We found it juicy and marinated with an appetizing blend of spices. The meat was smokey and complemented by the freshness of diced onions, cilantro, and a squeeze of lime — it gets a solid ten from us.

The chicken burritos were pretty good, too:The tender, well-seasoned chicken fillingwrapped in a warm tortilla was a highlight, accompanied by an array of fresh ingredients that elevated the overall experience. The combination of crisp lettuce, creamy guacamole, and zing of the tangy salsa was a pleasant experience for our palates. While we wanted a larger chicken portion, we found it to be a minor downside in the grand scheme of things.

Don’t miss the jalapeno poppers and chicken quesadillas. There was a generous amount of cheese and chicken in the quesadillas, but it was not as juicy as we would have hoped — albeit still delicious. As for the jalapeno poppers, the cheese pull was real, but we would’ve liked the jalapeno to be a bit more spicy.

You can dine in, take away or have their munchies delivered to your door if you live inNew Cairo. Delivery to New Cairo is available through Talabat or El Menus.

It’s all the questions you may or may not have thought about, but chances are you’ll learn something about the history that went into creating the food world as we know it.

A concoction of stories, recipes, and the whimsy: The book is developed as a graphic novel where food sprites are happy to give you a history lesson on the serendipity that led to our favorite foods. Each chapter is accompanied by a tasty recipe and illustrations that add to the story.

A book for parents and kids alike: Because it’s so fun, it’s a perfect book for adults and children to enjoy together, making it a great addition to the family bookshelf. It could be a fun activity to pick a chapter with your kid and read the history while making the food it’s discussing.

If sweet treats are more your thing, Elliott’s previous book, Yummy: A History of Desserts might be more your speed. As the name suggests, the concept is the same but focuses on sweets instead. But the same elements of history, with a hint more science, are present.
