WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

THIS EVENING: A look at the Madbouly government’s fiscal projections for 2024-2025

Good afternoon folks, and happy near-Thursday. The weekend is peeking over the horizon as more stories begin to flood our news cycle.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

Our first look at next year’s budget: Earlier today we got our first look at the Madbouly government’s fiscal projections for the fiscal year 2024-2025. The government sees the economy growing at a 4.8% clip in the coming fiscal year, up from this year’s estimated growth of 3.0%, according to a document seen by Enterprise. The government hopes to see headline inflation average 15% during the FY 2024-25, significantly down from a projected 38% this year.

THE BIG STORIES ABROAD

#1-Tens killed in bomb attack in Iran: Two bomb attacks near the grave of late Irani military commander Qasem Soleimani killed at least 73 and injured over 170 others. The attacks came on the fourth anniversary of Soleimani’s assassination by the US. The death toll is still being updated. (CNN | Reuters | Bloomberg)

#2- The death of Hamas’ second in command, Saleh al-Arouri, has also continued to dominate the international press since we dispatched thismorning. A Hezbollah spokesperson says Israel is behind the strike on the Hezbollah base in Dahieh, consisting of a drone and three rockets, but they have yet to claim responsibility despite a US defense official also pointing the finger at the IDF. Even a member of the Knesset from Netanyahu’s Likud party, Danny Danon, took to X to congratulate the IDF for killing Arouri, according to the Washington Post.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

TikTok trends that are creeping into the workplace. PLUS: Is there a Game of Thrones animation series in the works?

Bare Minimum Mondays, Rage Applying, and Quiet Quitting are TikTok work trends that are being applied in some workplaces globally, according to CNBC. If you doubted the influence of this social media platform, this might be a time to catch on, especially if you intend to keep your workforce happy and, um, working.

These viral catchphrases intend to mark a movement prioritizing health over mental well-being to create a better balance, says LinkedIn career expert Andrew McCaskill. Employers have even started incorporating these phrases into their vernacular to cultivate happiness and understanding in the workplace. One worker amusingly recounted a time when her manager wished her a “Happy Bare Minimum Monday,” explains the article.

HR is in on it too. “Quiet quitting,” where employees choose to mentally check out instead of resigning from their jobs, is something they’ve been watching out for. CEO of Twomentor (an HR and leadership consultancy) Julie Kantor says that she has advised managers of Fortune 500 companies on trends or signs that might indicate that their employees are nearing burnout and might opt to quietly quit.

How can we embrace these new trends today? Kantor suggests ensuring that meeting with staff should include some time to touch base with them on a personal level and to inquire whether they need your support or guidance. Also, incorporating the Bare Minimum Mondays (where staff choose to work on a small number of tasks and reserve the harder, longer ones for later in the week) has some benefits such as avoiding midweek burnouts and ensuring better quality work.

Game of Thrones fans could be seeing three animated series from George R. R. Martin’s pantheon shares the author in a blog post. Two of the series will be based on the Song of Ice and Fire, he disclosed, after singing the praises of BlueEyeSamurai which he described as having “the most gorgeous art that I have ever seen. The story is terrific as well. […] it is violent, visceral, sexy […] with amazing action sequences and a cast of well-developed characters, colorful and complex and real.”

Sea Snake is a third project that will probably be animated into a series titled Nine Voyages, which he explains would be best for the nature of the series as it is mostly at sea and in ports — a costly venture if it were a live-action production. But hold your horses, Martin does not say that these animated series will see the light of day yet, but HBO and the author extraordinaire have started working on it “a few years back,” and with Hollywood’s unpredictability, it is hard to tell whether it will be aired or not.

While you wait, you can see what Martin was talking about by watching Blue Eye Samurai on Netflix.

A murder turns the lives of a family around in this Swedish drama

📺 ON THE TUBE TONIGHT-
(all times CLT)

Not everything is as it seems in Netflix’s A Nearly Normal Family. After a shocking murder takes place, a seemingly perfect family must do what they can to protect each other. While watching the Swedish crime drama, you won’t know who to trust, and who knows more than they’re letting on.

The suspense is palatable. The actors help make that happen, especially the mother played by Lo Kauppi, who does a great job creating a character who you might dislike or distrust but you can’t quite put your finger on why. The rest of the cast, Alexandra Karlsson Tyrefors who plays the main character Stella, and Bjorn Bengtsson who plays her father also deliver fantastic performances.

It can be slow at times. But we’d argue that it helps build the suspense factor that draws you into the show. The flashbacks and altering perspectives also help do this. They are few and far between — but when they arise, they are powerful. One instance was when we got to relive the day of the murder through each character’s eyes without too much being given away.

You can watch the series on Netflix.

The Merengues are back: Real Madrid will host Mallorca at 8:15pm in gameweek 19 of La Liga. The home team with 45 points leads the rankings with a goal difference over Girona.

Girona and Atletico’s face-off: The highlight of the gameweek is Atletico Madrid’s clash with Girona which kicks off at 10:30pm. Atletico sits in third place behind Girona with 38 points, and a victory would give the team some hope of competing for the lead.

Other games playing during this gameweek:

  • Granada v Cadiz (6pm)
  • Celta Vigo v Real Betis (8:15pm)

Paris Saint-Germain and Toulouse in the French Super Cup: The Parc des Princes will host the Trophée des Champions match between Paris Saint-Germain and Toulouse at 9:45pm. PSG enters the game as the league victors, while Toulouse comes in as the French Cup champion. The Parisians are looking to nabbing the title for the second year in a row and their twelfth in the league’s history, meanwhile, their opponents aim to make history and emerge victorious for the first time.

🥖EAT THIS TONIGHT

Luigi’soffers sandwiches we only hear and see on TV. The chicken parm, the cheesesteak, and the caprese: Often devoured as we sit salivating on our sofas, now we can enjoy them in the luxury of our homes.

From Friends to The Sopranos to The Office, the supremacy of the chicken parmigiana sandwich is undisputed. And let’s face it: Who wouldn’t want a crispy chicken breast covered in rich marinara, melted mozzarella, flavorful parmesan, and a nice aged provolone, served between a fresh loaf of bread? Our only tip would be to eat this sandwich fresh and warm before the cheese loses its pull.

Picking our favorite was a real toughie: The El Carmeloso sandwich is a meat-lover’s dream and a personal favorite at Enterprise HQ and for all the right reasons: Filet mignon, browned butter, arugula, and caramelized onions.

Herbivores fear not, Luigi’s has you covered: The restaurant has a whole sandwich named after you. Even our carnivore friends can’t deny how delicious the toasted baguette stuffed with balsamic glazed grilled eggplant, zucchini, arugula, and yellow peppers is. Chef’s kiss.

They ain’t cheap though — but provide great value for money. A regular-sized sandwich is priced between EGP 200-250, and that’s if you’re able to resist their crostinis and other side dishes. The potato salad is pricey but good, but we would skip the EGP 60 potato wedges.

PRO TIP- If you’re interested in trying more than one sandwich, we’d recommend getting their smaller ones, which are closer to EGP 150 — more friendly to your stomach capacity and your wallet. Also, they are in Maadi, so double-check if they deliver to your area before you get excited about ordering from their menu.
