WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

New aluminum foil and sanitary ware factories set to see a total of USD 130 mn in investments

Good afternoon everyone, and happy almost-Thursday. The news cycle shows no signs of slowing down even as we barrel toward the weekend, with news of fresh investments — and content — keeping us on our toes.

MASHREQ BRINGS GLOBAL CLEANUP CAMPAIGN TO EGYPT

Mashreq’s Climb2Change environmental cleanup initiative is coming to Egypt this month: Our friends at Mashreq are set to begin clean-up of three designated zones in Wadi Degla in November, as part of their wider Climb2Change global ESG initiative focused on sustainability-linked financing and environmental preservation, the bank said in a statement (pdf). The initiative aims to scale and clean up 14 mountain sites around the world, reaching seven peaks and seven base camps, including — most recently — Pakistan’s K2. Led by esteemed Egyptian adventurers Omar Samra and Manal Rostom, the project will focus on waste management and conservation promotion in one of Cairo’s natural wonders.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

New aluminum foil factory to be established in SCZone with USD 80 mn in investments: Suez Canal Authority subsidiary Port Said for Engineering Works is set to establish a USD 80 mn aluminum foil factory in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone), in partnership with an unnamed Chinese investor, Al Borsa writes. The project — which received its feasibility studies two weeks ago — will kick off in 1Q 2025 with an expected initial production capacity of 60k tons and plans to increase capacity to 100k tons by the end of the factory’s first year of operation.

Turkish and Chinese investors are also set to pump USD 50 mn into sanitary wares manufacturing: The Cairo Chamber of Commerce’s sanitary wares division has secured some USD 50 mn from Turkish and Chinese investors for three sanitary wares factories, division head Fawzy Abdel Galil told Al Mal. The two Chinese-owned factories slated for investment began production earlier this month, while the third Turkish-Egyptian factory will begin operation in early 2025.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

Major lenders pledge a 60% increase in annual climate funding by 2030 at COP29: A number of development banks including the World Bank have pledged to increase annual financing for low- and middle-income countries’ climate adaptation to USD 120 bn by 2030, up 60% from 2023. While a marked increase from previous goals, the pledge — which was announced on the sidelines of COP29 in Baku — doesn’t rise to the multi-tn commitment developing countries say they need. This year’s COP has already seen a particularly strong outpouring of pressure on wealthy nations to up their contributions, as participants hash out new, high-stakes contribution targets set to come into effect next year. FOR YOUR COMMUTE

The Iron Throne and its dragons head for the silver screen

Buckle up, Westeros fans, our favorite fantasy world is making moves toward the big screen. That’s right, after years of rumors and whispers, a Game of Thrones movie is finally in early development, Entertainment Weekly reports. Warner Bros. is quietly setting the stage for at least one film set in George R. R. Martin’s world, with HBO head Casey Bloys confirming at a recent 2025 preview event that the prestige media group is playing around with ideas for a feature film.

This isn’t exactly a new idea. Back when Game of Thrones was still on air, the show’s creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss wanted to cap off the story with three movies. Even George R. R. Martin mused about a movie budget to give those dragons the grandeur they deserve.

Not everybody was initially on board, though: HBO reportedly pushed back hard against the idea of moving the show into film format when it was first floated, with some suggesting that the company wanted to preserve the prestige series as its own intellectual property.

Happily for GoT fans, HBO seems to have had a change of heart: While HBO’s comments on the potential new film have remained vague, Bloys’ comments struck a cautiously optimistic tone. He noted that HBO will be reading scripts along the way, seeing what sticks, and hoping for “a fun, big spectacle” to hit theaters. So no director, no cast, no details yet — but who needs them? Right now, it’s enough to know Westeros might soon grace the silver screen.

Why now? Ever since Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav put a laser focus on bringing iconic franchises back to life, the media giant has witnessed a wave of fantasy franchise revivals. For example, The Lord of the Rings is set to return to theaters in anime form with The War of the Rohirrim this December.

Spinoffs and franchise extensions have been taking up more oxygen in the media space of late, as companies bet big on brand recognition to attract viewers. “There’s a lot of decision fatigue out there,” Universal Television president Erin Underhill told The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year. “I feel like [viewers] want to be able to tune into something that they trust they’re going to have a great experience for that 30 or 60 minutes.” Critics, meanwhile, argue that this move has led to less-than-stellar content that doesn’t do justice to original series and crowds out new and more innovative ideas.

Speaking of spinoffs, let’s not forget that HBO has kept the Game of Thrones universe alive and kicking with the prequel series House of the Dragon, which is already a hit and preparing for its third season. The company’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms series is also set to debut in June 2025.

For now, the movie is still a wildling in the making, but if a story worthy of the Iron Throne lands on the table, it’s safe to say we’ll be flocking to theaters to see it. Because winter? Winter might just be coming to the big screen.

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT

A murder in the mountains of Crete

📺 Sometimes, love kills. Killer Heat, adapted from a short story by acclaimed Norwegian writer Jo Nesbø, is a murder mystery in the isolated Greek island of Crete, which is absolutely rampant with corruption and under the strong hold of the mafia.

The tragedy: Suspicion grows among the influential Vardakis family as they mourn the death of Leonides (Richard Maden), who fell climbing one of the island’s mountains despite his mastery of free climbing from a young age. Penelope (Shailene Woodley), the wife of his twin brother (also Madden), seeks out the help of private investigator Nick Bali (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) to uncover the truth about Leo’s death.

Not only does Bali unravel the secrets of the Vardakis family as he tugs at the string of the murder case, but he also unravels his own, bringing back memories of a past he ran away from.

The pitfalls: The film has been criticized for inconsistent pacing, a flaw that disqualifies it as a modern classic of the detective genre. The narrative goes off on a tangent that distracts from the main plot, but picks up the pace during the final third of the film, when threads of the mystery are revealed.

Woodley and Gordon-Levitt’s chemistry breathes life into the film, but Madden’s performance was at times too melodramatic. The soundtrack was also another high point, adding to the effect of certain dramatic events. Our verdict? It’s a solid film to watch for fans of thrillers and investigative movies.

WHERE TO FIND IT- You can watch Killer Heat on Amazon Prime, or watch the trailer on YouTube (runtime: 2:05).

EAT THIS TONIGHT

Sip and snack at East-T Cafe

🧋Looking for a spot that will satisfy your boba cravings and your need for crispy, flavorful fried chicken? East-T Cafe in Maadi has you covered. Known for its menu that merges Asian snacks with a unique boba selection, the cafe serves up an impressive lineup that is far from your typical menu items.

Let’s talk about drinks. With around 50 boba flavors on the menu, East-T’s menu is like a playground for boba lovers. Each of their drinks is loaded with the classic tapioca boba for that signature chewy taste — with the option of changing it to either flavored popping boba, sago (smaller tapioca-like boba), or jelly.

We had an appetite for the tropical choices first, which put their bestseller, mango coconut fruit tea, at the top of our list. The creamy coconut flavor blended with the mango hit just the right level of sweetness, and earned its spot as bestseller. Our next pick was the pineapple passion fruit tea. While the fruit chunks were a bit too generous, they did add a natural and refreshing touch to the flavor.

For something nutty and indulging, the pistachio boba milk. It’s essentially a pistachio latte with boba, the pistachio flavor is distinct without being overpowering, making it a great choice if you’re looking for something less fruity and more dessert-like.

As for the food: You can pick any sauce to pair with either your fried wings or fried boneless chicken. Their Chinese spicy sauce packed a flavorful punch, which delivers a savory bold heat with just the right amount of spice. For those who want to push the heat even further, they’ve got an extra hot chicken option — inspired by the spicy buldak sauce — that will test your tolerance. Prefer something on the milder side? The honey mustard has the best tangy to sweetness ratio. The one similarity is that they both deliver the perfect crunch.

BONUS: Each fried chicken or wing order comes with a side of fried tteokbokki — chewy, crispy rice cakes that complement the chicken just right, the way a side of fries would.

Those with an adventurous palate can try their… uncommon fried chicken sauce combos. You can pick between matcha cheese, mango coconut and passion fruit sauces.

WHERE TO FIND IT- Only Maadi residents can indulge in East-T from the comfort of their home through Talabat, but unfortunately, their delivery menu only covers drinks.

Remember what it was like to enjoy food

📚 Ruby Tandoh’s Eat Up isn’t just about food — it’s about the pleasure of eating. In a world obsessed with fad diets and restrictive eating, Eat Up is a breath of fresh air. Witty, relatable, and surprisingly insightful, Tandoh — a baker and columnist — tackles everything from the history of food to the psychology of eating with refreshing honesty that feels like a chat with a friend over a cup of tea.

Tandoh debunks common food myths and challenges societal expectations about eating with ease, encouraging her readers to listen to their bodies and eat what they enjoy, rather than what this week’s viral diet guru tells them they should be eating.

Head to the grocery store. Eat Up also includes simple, delicious recipes that are accessible to anyone reading. Think comforting classics like roasted vegetable soup, a filling sandwich, and sometimes just some chocolate you’d felt too guilty to eat. She believes that good, healthy food doesn’t need to be organic, whole grain, or whatever other label adds to the price tag — buy a tin of tomato paste instead of making your sauce from scratch. It’s not that serious.

WHERE TO FIND IT- Eat Up is available on Amazon.
