WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

EGP-denominated sukuk close to maiden issuance

Good afternoon, friends, and welcome to the almost-weekend. The news cycle is winding down ahead of the long weekend, and so are we.

THE BIG STORY TODAY-

Gov’t nears its first-ever local sovereign sukuk issuance: The government is close to issuing its first EGP-denominated sukuk before the year’s end, as part of a program with a total target value of EGP 25 bn for FY 2025-2026, a senior government official told EnterpriseAM today. About 90% of the maiden issuance procedures have already been completed, our source added.

The Finance Ministry has finalized a new timeline for the anticipated issuance through short- and medium-term tranches, the source noted. Meanwhile, the ministry is currently meeting with the participating banks eligible for subscription to develop a plan for the first tranche, which may be limited in size to measure investors’ appetite.

REFRESHER- We were previously told that the first two tranches of the EGP-denominated sukuk could be valued at EGP 3-4 bn, and that they will be offered before the end of this year.

Required steps in progress: A pricing framework is currently being developed for the local sukuk, the source noted. At the same time, officials are also identifying the assets that will be used as collateral for these sukuk, the source said, adding that the ownership of these assets will not be transferred.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD-

It’s another quiet afternoon in the business press, with US gold prices skyrocketing and Nestle CEO Laurent Freixe’s ousting still getting plenty of ink. Among the stories getting top billing in the global press this afternoon:

Another natural disaster follows Afghanistan’s magnitude 6.0 earthquake — the death toll of which has risen to 1.1k, Reuters reports — with a landslide in western Sudan killing at least 370 people. The Sudan Liberation Movement, which is in control of the affected Marra Mountains area, claims that the death toll has surpassed 1k. The landslide was triggered by days of heavy rain, and left the village of Tarasin flattened with only one survivor found. The natural disaster is among the deadliest in Sudan’s recent history. OVER IN BEIJING- Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing. The meeting was initially held at the Chinese capital’s Great Hall of the People and later continued at Xi’s personal residence. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un also made his way to the neighboring country to join what major global media outlets are calling a “show of solidarity with countries shunned by the West.” The three leaders are set to be present at China’s massive military parade tomorrow. (Reuters | New York Times | BBC | Associated Press)

ICYMI- Earlier this week, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping also met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit. The two leaders affirmed their countries’ deepening trust and cooperation, following years of political disputes, hot on the heels of Trump’s steep punitive tariffs on India.

☀️ TOMORROW’S WEATHER- We’re in for a warm day in Cairo, with temperatures peaking at 35°C before cooling down to 22°C. Still up north? We’re expecting a high of 29°C and a low of 26°C, according to our favorite weather app.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Good AI work is human-sourced

? The path to competent AI output is paved with human grunt work. According to NBC News, humans are being hired to pick up after AI, tasked with fixing sloppy work generated by still-faulty bots as customer dissatisfaction with the technology’s performance grows. This could spell good news for creatives whose jobs were seemingly threatened by genAI.

A few text prompts and a human can get the job done. After an overreliance on its platforms, workers are now being hired to scrub AI influence from projects, going in manually to rectify any inaccuracies or to rid it of identifiable and generic AI markers. Recent data reported by NBC reveals that clients are increasingly looking for humans to supplement work generated by AI.

The A in AI doesn’t stand for artiste. AI illustrations are easy to spot thanks to obvious anatomical goofs, “plasticine effect,” and unintelligible text. Graphic designers — whose careers were the first to be written off by AI proponents — are now being sought out to revise AI-generated work, sometimes having to completely redraw illustrations, or simply polishing up images to make them less observably automated.

Copywriters — another endangered profession — are being hired to rewrite AI-generated articles, editing out redundancies like the hallmark AI em-dash (though we at EnterpriseAM are still fighting for humans’ claim to the punctuation mark), and buzzwords that serve as AI dogwhistles. Other times, they’re forced to do extensive research that the AI failed to provide, or completely hallucinated. AI-assisted coding also doesn’t seem to be cutting it, with developers being commissioned to fix ineffective vibe-coded websites and apps, like Microsoft’s August update to Windows that has been reportedly breaking SSDs just months after CEO Satya Nadella boasted about AI’s 30% contribution to software code.

These gigs are not exactly a freelancer’s dream — given that they’re often underpaid — with clients underestimating the hard work they put into fixing AI’s sloppy mistakes. Mending a draft to produce infallible work demands the same, if not more, effort than starting from scratch, according to freelancers who take on these jobs out of financial necessity. While clients and employers resort to AI tools for cost-cutting purposes, they now have to turn to freelancers to add a corrective human touch at an added price.

AI isn’t on track to replace humans anytime soon. People remain an indispensable part of guaranteeing the creation of quality work. While AI still occupies automated, “unskilled” tasks, complex and creative work is witnessing growing job demand — freelance job platform Fiverr has reported a 250% hike in demand for niche work in areas like web design and book illustration. Just last year, Amazon’s allegedly AI-powered grocery store in the UK — which promised a “just walk out” experience for customers, letting them grab whatever they wanted with the total automatically deducted from their linked credit card — was found to have been employing around 1k remote workers to watch customers through CCTV and keep track of the items they checked out.

EAT THIS TONIGHT

San Marino brings hearty Italian comfort to the table

? San Marino is a cozy little restaurant that’s easy to fall in love with. The food feels homemade in the best way — hearty, comforting, and prepared with care — the atmosphere is warm and inviting, the menu is full of variety, and the portions are massive. San Marino isn’t the place for a light snack, so you’ll want to come hungry — or better yet, bring a few friends and order to share.

Take it from the top. You wouldn’t want to skip the appetizers here. The garlic bread is exactly what you hope it’ll be — a crunchy bite with the perfect balance of garlic, butter, and seasoning, giving way to a soft and fluffy interior. Soup is seldom ordered outside of the chilly confines of winter, but the chicken and mushroom beats the heat. It’s creamy and rich without being too heavy, packed with flavor, and makes the perfect warm-up for the rest of the meal.

Pasta lovers will be very happy here. The fettuccine shrimp pasta is creamy, rich, and satisfying without being overly heavy. The shrimp are fresh and well-cooked, and the sauce complements the pasta perfectly. The penne polinari is also a must-try. It arrives in a clay pot covered with a layer of melted cheese that you’ll need to dig through (or slurp up) to reach what’s inside — juicy, perfectly spiced chicken, fresh mushrooms, and creamy white sauce tossed with tender penne. It’s cheesy, creamy, and indulgent in all the right ways.

If pasta isn’t your thing, there’s still plenty to enjoy. The creamy mushroom chicken main dish is a standout on its own — tender chicken breast cooked perfectly and served in a rich, flavorful mushroom sauce. It’s simple but comforting, and paired with their generous sides, it makes for a hearty meal that doesn’t disappoint.

WHERE TO FIND IT- You can order San Marino straight to your doorstep from Talabat or ElMenus, or dine in at one of their branches in New Cairo and Heliopolis.
