WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Instapay won’t charge individuals transfer fees through March

Good afternoon folks, and welcome to your final PM edition for this calendar year. We have all the latest for you today on the Central Bank of Egypt’s decision to extend Instapay transfer fee exemptions through March, Eni’s postponement of planned drilling operations, and the secret behind Reddit’s recent stock market success.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

#1- No Instapay transfer fees for the first three months of 2025: The Central Bank of Egypt has announced that it will be extending Instapay transfer fee exemptions for individuals for three months effective 1 January, with the policy subject to possible renewal at the end of the period, according to a press release (pdf).

#2- Increased drilling operations in Zohr postponed: Italian energy giant Eni has pushed back plans to ramp up its drilling operations in the Zohr gas field beginning this month, an anonymous government official told Asharq Business. The planned production increase of 220 mn cubic feet of gas per day will now come in May 2025.

Why the delay? While Eni attributed the setback to unstable weather this winter, the official noted that Eni had delayed restarting drilling operations a number of times after its request to export gas through Damietta’s liquefaction plant was refused, with the source citing a desire to preserve the field’s production for the local market as a driving factor.

REMEMBER- Earlier this year, Eni announced that it would be drilling two new wells in its Zohr field shortly after the government cleared up USD 1.3 bn in arrears owed to foreign energy companies.

#3- FRA greenlights Beltone capital increase: The Financial Regulatory Authority (FRA) approved Beltone Holding’s request to raise its capital by EGP 10.75 bn, according to an EGX disclosure (pdf). The company will now convene an extraordinary general assembly meeting to sign off on the capital increase. The move, which Beltone first announced last week, follows an EGP 10 bn capital increase last year.

CORRECTION- In Sunday’s issue of EnterpriseAM Egypt, we cited a research note by Al Ahly Pharos stating that Egypt’s external obligations in 2026 are estimated to sit at USD 55 bn. The investment bank’s actual estimate for Egypt is to pay USD 55 bn in total between 2025 and the end of 2026. The story has been corrected on our website.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

It’s another quiet day in international news, with most of the global press powered down as the year comes to a close. Alongside headlines still dominated by South Korea’s horrific Jeju Air crash and the passing of former US president Jimmy Carter, Reuters reports that South Korean investigators are seeking an arrest warrant for suspended South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol after his brief imposition of martial law earlier this month. If a court signs off on the warrant, Yoon — who has failed to respond to summons by the country’s police and corruption investigations office — would become the first incumbent president to face arrest in the country’s history.

** CATCH UP QUICK on the top stories from today’s EnterpriseAM:

  • As 2025 approaches, Egypt is set to attract bns in foreign direct investment, with a focus on key sectors including automotive, textiles, steel, renewables, green ammonia and fertilizers. Throughout 2024, the country secured commitments from companies and investors across the globe promising to pump funds into various industries — GCC nations were among the top investors in the Egyptian economy.
  • Another year where IPOs were few and far in between: We rang in 2024 with the expectations that three companies would IPO throughout the year — but the EGX witnessed only two IPOs in 2024.
  • A new EGP 30 bn initiative for local manufacturers: The industry and finance ministries have announced the launch of the first phase of a new EGP 30 bn initiative to support companies in priority industrial sectors.

☀️ TOMORROW’S WEATHER- Temperatures remain stable tomorrow with a high of 19°C in the capital but a chilling low of 9°C at night. We’re also seeing a 25% chance of precipitation, according to our favorite weather app.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Why do AI companies want Reddit’s data?

After years of financial struggles, Reddit is cashing in with AI. With AI companies increasingly hungry for large troves of user data, Reddit has jumped on the bandwagon with its decision to sell its large library of user-generated content — a choice that has boosted its revenue and made it a hot stock for investors, The Wall Street Journal writes.

What’s so great about Reddit’s data? The platform is full of text-heavy posts, comments, and discussions that are organized by topic and whose pseudonymity often prompts much more candid answers than can be found on other areas of the internet. This kind of data is a veritable gold mine for AI companies, who usually rely on human interaction to make their models sound natural and conversational. On top of that, Reddit has a unique voting system that allows users, and now AI, to determine what counts as a quality post or not — allowing AI models to further refine their sense of human tastes.

The impact: Reddit’s data-licensing revenue grew from USD 12.3 mn to USD 81.6 mn during the first nine months of this year, following the company’s shift toward charging AI companies for access. While this is still a small sum compared to its core advertising sales, the area’s significant growth has helped more than double the company’s stock price.

The platform is changing in ways that users may not like. Reddit has unveiled its AI-powered search and answer tool, Reddit Answers, using models from OpenAI and Google — showing that the company is embracing the tech that made its data so valuable. But, as the company dives deeper into AI, it could start to feel less like the Reddit users know and love — and more like all the other platforms that use algorithms to show AI-generated and narrowly user-specific content.

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT

A reenactment of the most famous ghost story ever told

? One of the most famous ghost stories ever told. The Enfield Poltergeist is based on the 1977 haunting of a family in Enfield, London. This four-part docuseries shows real audio recordings from the initial investigation, paired with dramatized reenactments that bring the eerie events to life.

The plot: Maurice Grosse (Christopher Ettridge) is a paranormal investigator who looks into the strange things happening at the home of the Hodgson family. The focus is on 11-year-old Janet Hodgson (Olivia Booth-Ford), who is the main victim of bizarre activity — we’re talking flying furniture and strange voices.

The storytelling style is quite unique. The original recordings are incorporated into the plot through the actors lipsyncing them — so you’re hearing the audio from 1977, while watching the events unfold. It's very creepy, but also very cool.

Throughout the episodes, doubts around the case are introduced to the audience. With the over-the-top ghostly antics and strange activity, viewers are left to wonder if the entire story was actually just an elaborate hoax — with a bunch of unanswered questions lingering after the curtain’s fall.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can watch the docu-series on AppleTV+ or catch the trailer on Youtube (runtime: 1:26).

EAT THIS TONIGHT

Simple sandwiches satisfy the biggest cravings

? Looking for a quick bite that takes you back to the good old days? Qatma serves up a selection of Egyptian sandwiches that will hit the spot. From grilled kofta to tender chicken shawarma, their menu keeps it simple but delivers on flavor.

We started with the Grilled Kofta Sandwich Wrap, and it was everything we expected. Ground meat seasoned with olive oil, lemon juice, garlic powder, salt, and pepper gave it a nostalgic taste, reminiscent of the kofta sandwiches you’d grab at a local sporting club. The flavor is familiar and comforting, like the Egyptian version of a Big Mac — unfussy, but packed with rich, savory goodness.

We tried all their sandwich variations: We started with the Shish Tawook Sandwich Wrap version. Grilled chicken breast, marinated and paired with a garlic sauce, stuffed in fresh, soft bread. It’s a mix of Lebanese and Egyptian flavors, offering a twist on the classic chicken shawarma. The tender chicken, combined with the smooth garlic sauce, made for a delightful bite that we kept coming back to.

Next up, was the bestseller Hawawshi 5 Lokm, consisting of five mini sandwiches stuffed with minced meat, onions, and spices, and served with a tahina pack on the side. These bite-sized wonders are dangerously addictive, each one packed with savory flavors. The size can vary a bit, however. Sometimes they’re tiny, and sometimes they’re nearly palm-sized — but they’re always satisfying, so opt for two orders.

Finally, we went for the Caizer sandwiches, Egypt’s take on shawarma. The Meat Caizer is filled to the brim with juicy Egyptian meat shawarma, tahina sauce, tomatoes, onions, greens, and a hit of mint. The meat is tender, juicy, and flavorful, and the combo of ingredients hits just the right notes.

The Chicken Caizer doesn’t fall short either, with juicy chicken shawarma, garlic sauce, and pickles adding that tangy kick. These smaller sandwiches are perfect for a quick snack, but you’ll probably want to order a few if you’re only going for the Caizers.

Everything at Qatma is a treat (literally). One sandwich is not enough, and what’s great is that each sandwich brings something familiar yet fresh to the table.

WHERE TO FIND: You can find the restaurant at HydeOut, First Settlement, and ZED EastClub. New Cairo residents can also order through Talabat.
