WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Old rent law debate postponed amid parliamentary objections

Good afternoon, friends. We’re racing towards the final stretch of the week and into the long weekend. The news cycle appears to be taking a breather, and so should you.

THE BIG STORY TODAY-

Old rent act discussions postponed to tomorrow amid parliamentary pushback: House speaker Hanafy Gebaly adjourned the general assembly and postponed the debate on the controversial old rent law to tomorrow’s session, following objections from parliamentary blocs. “The government showed up unprepared and lacking key data and statistics,” Gebaly said in a statement, calling for full attendance by MPs and the press tomorrow.

ElSewedy Capital inked an MoU with the Oil Ministry to explore and produce phosphate ore at the Sebaeya mines in the Nile Valley, according to a statement from the ministry. The agreement also allows for the possibility of ElSewedy Capital or its affiliated companies to enter future negotiations to set up joint ventures for exploration and production. The move is part of the government’s push to raise the mining sector’s share of GDP to 5-6% from less than 1% currently.

A phosphate fertilizer plant could also be in the works — the agreement includes a feasibility study for the facility.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

The foreign press is still honing in on the Senate’s marathon vote on Trump’s tax bill: Senate Republicans worked through a nearly 19-hour marathon voting session that stretched into Tuesday morning in a push to pass US President Donald Trump’s sweeping tax and spending package, despite internal party divisions over its projected USD 3.3 tn addition to the national debt. Senators can only afford to lose three votes to pass the bill and two Republicans have already indicated they’re against it. The 940-page bill, which Trump wants passed before the 4 July holiday, includes controversial provisions such as cuts to Medicaid and expanded funding for immigration enforcement measures. (Reuters | Bloomberg | Washington Post | Associated Press)

Elon Musk pledged to unseat lawmakers who back the bill, criticizing its projected hit to the US debt pile. “Every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then immediately voted for the biggest debt increase in history should hang their head in shame,” he wrote on X. “And they will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth,” he added. He also floated the idea of forming a new “America Party” if the bill passes.

And, needless to say, Trump did not let it slide: Reviving his public feud with Musk, Trump suggested that the government review subsidies received by the Tesla chief as a way to rein in spending. “Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history,” he said on Truth Social, adding that the country “would save a fortune” if these funds were cut.

☀️ TOMORROW’S WEATHER- The capital will be seeing another sunny day tomorrow, with the mercury set to peak at 36°C before dropping to 23°C at night. The North Coast remains cool, with temperatures peaking at just 27°C before slightly cooling down to 24°C at night, according to our favorite weather app.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Could Meta be using your private photos to train AI?

If it’s online, it’s fair game. It’s no secret that publicly shared photos, visuals, and text on platforms like Facebook and Instagram are used to train AI models, but could your private photos also be at risk? According to the Verge, they may very well be. Earlier this week, the tech publication claimed that Facebook’s new cloud processing feature — which allows the social network to upload select media from users’ phones to the cloud on a regular basis — gives Meta the right to retain and use unpublished media.

How does it work? Users trying to post stories via Facebook were given the option to turn on cloud processing in exchange for “personalized creative ideas” such as photo collages, memory recaps, and AI restyling, according to TechCrunch. Once users opt in, they’re essentially agreeing to Meta’s AI terms, which then gives the platform permission to analyze 30 days worth of unpublished photos — including facial features and other objects present in the photos.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise, seeing as Meta is no stranger to using content on its platforms to train its gen AI models. In 2024, the tech giant admitted to feeding all posts made by its adult Facebook and Instagram users since 2007 into AI, unless users had set their posts to private. Meta, however, claims that unpublished photos accessed through the new feature are not, at present, being used to train its AI models. When asked by the Verge if that would remain the case in the future, Meta refrained from answering.

Unlike other cloud photo services, Meta doesn’t make any promises. Google Photos, which suggests similar AI edits to photos, makes it clear that personal data uploaded to its servers is not used in any way to train its gen AI models. Meta’s terms, however, leave much room for speculation. The good news is that users may opt out of the feature through settings, which would effectively remove the photos from Meta’s cloud servers.

That said, the tech giant will stop at nothing to secure victory in the AI arms race. From USD bn “acquisitions” to aggressive hiring strategies that just cost OpenAI four key researchers, Meta has been on a roll. Earlier this week, the Financial Times reported that the tech company is currently attempting to raise USD 29 bn to fund data centers in the US in an effort to cement itself as an AI leader. The tech company is pulling all the stops, but just how far will it go?

EAT THIS TONIGHT

Italian food done right at Numa

Craving a satisfying meal in an equally satisfying space? Numa checks all the boxes. This Italian restaurant has seemingly cracked the code; the space is welcoming, the flavors are on point, and the menu has a little bit of everything. We’re talking loaded appetizers, classic pastas and risottos, authentic mains, and even breakfast options if you consider yourself an early bird. In short: Numa has something for everyone.

It’s best to start with their signature truffle fries. Crispy and topped with a creamy truffle sauce that’s rich in flavor without being overwhelming, a trip to Numa wouldn’t be complete without one of these bad boys on the table. If fries aren’t your cut of choice, the truffle baked potato offers the same flavors on a softer, subtler base.

Care for a fettuccine chicken alfredo? You definitely should. The sauce is creamy and rich in flavor, and the grilled chicken is well-seasoned and tender. While portions may catch you off guard at first, you’ll quickly come to the realization that they’re more than enough. Pro tip: ask for your preferred pasta cooking level to get the best experience.

If pasta isn’t your thing, the chicken parmesan is another standout. The golden-fried chicken cutlet is crispy, flavorful, and drenched in marinara sauce — and just the right amount of parmesan cheese, though you can never have too much cheese if you ask us.

Numa also has a solid drinks menu. Refreshing with just the right amount of sweetness, the peach iced tea was our drink of choice. Another strong contender was the sour coconut cocktail, which was essentially a metaphorical tropical beach in a glass. If you’re cutting out sugar entirely, Numa’s drinks menu boasts a selection of healthy juice blends that are just as delicious.

Dine out, or order in. You can find Numa at 5A by the Waterway, or in Korba, Heliopolis. If you’d prefer to order in, you can place an order through Talabat and El Menus, or by calling 0100 9302119.

Real Madrid goes head-to-head with Juventus

Your daily update on the Club World Cup: It’s one surprise after another for the European representatives. Inter Milan and Manchester City are out of the running, and Al Hilal just etched its name in the history books.

Brazilian clubs continue to shine. Fluminese was able to send Inter Milan — one of Europe’s most prominent clubs in recent years — packing with a clean two-goal victory and an outstanding performance. Fluminese is now the second Brazilian club to qualify for the quarter finals.

Al Hilal beats the odds. The Saudi club achieved a historic result, securing a 4-3 victory over Manchester City in a thrilling match that went into extra time. The Citizens were promptly sent home, and Al Hilal proved they didn’t just go to the US for an honorable appearance.

Fluminese and Al Hilal will face off in the quarter finals on Friday, 4 July.

Tonight’s and tomorrow morning’s matches: All eyes are on Real Madrid and Juventus’ face-off, and the match between Borussia Dortmund and Monterrey determines the last club to qualify.

Real Madrid will face Juventus at the Hard Rock Stadium in the round of 16, tonight at 10pm. The Meringues enter the match after topping their group, despite a stumble with a draw against Al Hilal in their opening game in the tournament. Juventus faces a tough test following a 5-2 defeat against Manchester City in their last group stage match.

Borussia Dortmund and Monterrey face off at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, tomorrow at 4am. Given the club’s undefeated record in the group stage, Borussia Dortmund is a strong contender to advance. Monterrey will have to rely on their solid defence, led by former Real Madrid star Sergio Ramos, which conceded only one goal in the group stage.

The victors of both matches will meet on Saturday, 5 July.
