WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Inflation drops to its lowest level since December 2022

Good afternoon all you wonderful people, and happy Tuesday. Today we have a full lineup of news and views for you, including our fresh-off-the-press inflation reading for November, updates on United Bank’s EGX debut, and a deep dive into how our brains are coping with a constant onslaught of information in the digital age.

THE BIG STORIES TODAY

#1- Inflation decelerates for the first time since July: Annual headline urban inflation dropped a full percentage point to 25.5% in November, marking the first fall in inflation in three months and Egypt’s lowest inflation reading since December 2022, according to data from state statistics agency Capmas. Food and beverage inflation drove the decline, falling to 24.6% — its slowest pace in over two years. Non-food inflation also fell 0.1 percentage points to 26.0% last month, according to a Capital Economics’ note seen by EnterpriseAM, despite the previous months’ fuel and electricity price hikes.

#2- United Bank’s shares rise on EGX debut: United Bank’s shares rose 3.18% to EGP 14.29 per share at market’s close on their first day of trading, after rising as high as 10% in the early hours of trading, according to Bloomberg. The IPO saw the Central Bank of Egypt-owned bank offer a 30% stake — equivalent to 330 mn shares — at a share price of EGP 13.85 each, raising some EGP 4.57 bn.

#3- Raya Holding’s board preliminary approves offer for 42.9% stake in Raya Data Center: Raya Holding’s board of directors has voted to initially approve an offer from African infrastructure investment platform Africa50 to acquire a 42.9% stake in Raya IT subsidiary Raya Data Center for USD 15 mn, according to an EGX statement (pdf), with the investment set to go toward financing the construction of a data center in Egypt. The board has also authorized the appointment of an independent financial advisor to evaluate Raya Data Center’s fair value.

#4- Egyptian banks begin Apple Pay trial run: Several Egyptian banks have begun to offer digital payment service Apple Pay today on a trial basis, with plans to expand to more banks in the coming weeks.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

Israel launches airstrikes on military targets in Syria, denies advancing beyond buffer zone: Israeli forces continued to launch airstrikes on Syrian targets on Tuesday in attacks that they said aim to keep weapons from falling into hostile hands following the ouster of Syrian president Bashar Al Assad earlier this week. The strikes hit military installations and airbases across Syria, including near Damascus, and were described as the heaviest airstrikes since Assad’s departure. One Syrian source told Reuters that Israeli troops had advanced beyond the demilitarized zone and into the town of Quneitra near the Damascus airport — a claim that Israel has denied.

ALSO- Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu testified in Israeli court for the first time in his long-running corruption trial, which has seen the PM charged with bribery, fraud, and breach of trust. Netanyahu will testify in court three times a week during the trial, which comes as the Israeli leader faces an International Criminal Court arrest warrant for alleged war crimes.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Our brains are overloaded

We’re consuming more information than our brains can handle. In Your Stone AgeBrain in the Screen Age: Coping with Digital Distraction and Sensory Overload, neurologist and author Richard E. Cytowic discusses how despite physical biology being adaptive, the human brain is not much different that what it was in the Stone Age — meaning that even in modern times, the brain still struggles to keep up with technology, and all the information that comes with it.

The science: Overloading the brain’s energy capacity leads to pulling the body away from homeostasis — the biological need to be internally stable — which in turn leads to stress, and then to distraction, and then to error. Cytowic isn’t the first to say it — screen time is largely responsible for disturbing homeostatic equilibrium in modern times, according to Live Science.

Enter smartphones. In 2011, before internet connectivity on our phones became widespread, Americans consumed five times the information they had 25 years prior. Today — now that everyone is carrying an entire world of information in their pockets — we bombard our brains with 34 gigabytes of information each day. That’s more than your laptop can handle in a week. And that’s just during your leisure time.

Eye-to-brain connections are swift and easy. It takes information one-tenth of a second to travel from the retina to the visual cortex in the brain, in comparison to ear-to-brain connections, which take longer before the brain can understand what is heard. Doom scrolling through social media apps is a perfect example of visual and informational overload.

It’s no coincidence that the brain’s attention span has dwindled. The human brain cannot keep up with the extensive screen exposure and the speed at which technology develops, leading attention spans to drop below eight seconds, according to Microsoft — even less than the benchmark for lack of focus: the goldfish. Alternating attention — switching from one thing to another repeatedly, not only from platform to platform, but within each platform thanks to shortform content — is taking a toll on our cognitive abilities.

The dangers of overloading: As we potentially hit the limit of our brains’ computational power, we will find ourselves experiencing foggy thinking, reduced focus, memory lapse, and thought blocking. And because our neurons are constantly rewiring, the constant interruption of focus will hamper our ability to reflect and think critically in the long run.

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT

Black Doves might be your next favorite show

? Queen of period dramas Kiera Knightley leaves an impression on a contemporary production in spy thriller Black Doves. Helen Webb (Knightley) is a run-of-the-mill wife — to UK Defence Secretary Wallace Webb (Andrew Buchanan) — and mother of two, but is secretly a member of the Black Doves, a private spy organization with no allegiance except to the highest bidder.

When Helen’s lover is murdered, it triggers an obsessive manhunt for the killer. Her handler (Sarah Lancashire) tasks Sam Young (the talented Ben Whishaw) — already fractured in his own way — to keep the tight-wound agent out of trouble.

The series, with a tight six-episode run, has been praised for its strong performances. With drama heavy-hitters like Knightley, Whishaw, Lancashire, and Buchanan on the roster, as well as sharing producers with the critically acclaimed Chernobyl, it’s no surprise that Black Doves has already been renewed for a second season even before its premiere.

The Die Hard debate: With the show being set — and released — around Christmas, and festive lights and holiday music in the background, we expect the same online arguments that Die Hard triggered, asking whether Black Doves is technically a Christmas show. In any case, we’ll be waiting for next year’s holiday season for another installment.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can find Black Doves on Netflix, or watch the trailer on YouTube (runtime: 2:33).
