WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

AOI’s solar panel factory to see investments of USD 200-300 mn

Good afternoon folks, and happy Tuesday. With all eyes fixed on the new Trump administration, we have all the latest on the domestic and int’l fronts.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

#1- More details on AOI’s upcoming solar panel factory: State-owned Arab Organization for Industrialization’s (AOI) joint solar panel manufacturing project with Sweden’s Sunshine Pro will have an estimated investment cost of USD 200-300 mn, Executive Director of AOI’s Arab Renewable Energy Company Ghada El Gendy told AlMal.

The factory is set to be operational in July of this year and have a production capacity of 1 GW of panels by July 2026, El Gendy said. The factory’s entire production will be earmarked for export to European markets. The ownership division was not specified.

Remember: The two companies inked an agreement last month to build the plant — dubbed the Arab-Swedish Energy Factory (ASEF).

#2- Local fintech startup MoneyHash raised USD 5.2 mn in a pre-Series A funding round, according to a press release. Fintech-focused VC Flourish Ventures led the round, which also saw participation from Saudi Arabia’s Vision Ventures, Arab Bank’s Xelerate, Emurgo Kepple Ventures, and existing investors UAE’s COTU Ventures and Saudi’s RZM Investment.

Where will the money go? The startup will use the fresh funds to accelerate market penetration in the MEA region and for global expansion into other emerging markets where payment infrastructure remains underdeveloped, CEO Nader Abdelrazik told EnterpriseAM.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

American bankers are welcoming US president Donald Trump’s initial policy positions as his second term kicks off, with JPMorgan’s Mary Erdoes noting that “a lot of this is exactly what you would do to have a very pro-business environment.” CEOs attending the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland noted that they expected the rollback of Biden-era regulations to boost business activity and sharpen the US economy’s competitive advantage, pointing to the impact that a lighter-touch Trump administration could have on how the international Basel III financial solvency standards — which seek to prevent another financial crisis — are applied. (Financial Times | Reuters)

Among Trump’s first moves in office has been lifting sanctions on violent Israeli settlers in the West Bank — a move that came as dozens of Israeli settlers torched a Palestinian village in protest of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Trump has also restored sanctions against the International Criminal Court for issuing arrest warrants for Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli defence minister Yoav Gallant. FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Tech titans tighten grip on Trump’s second term

As Donald Trump returns to the White House, an unprecedented constellation of tech bn’aires is positioned to shape his administration’s policies. At Trump’s inauguration, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, Google co-founder Sergey Brin, and most notably, Elon Musk — now the world’s wealthiest person, and self-proclaimed “first buddy” in chief at the White House — occupied seats typically reserved for distinguished government officials.

(Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links to external sources.)

This wasn’t just ceremonial — it signaled a new power dynamic in Washington. Musk’s influence has already proved significant. Fresh off spending over USD 250 mn to help secure Trump’s victory, he flexed his new political muscles by helping derail an emergency spending measure, nearly triggering a government shutdown. Trump has appointed Musk to lead a new non-governmental office focused on reducing government inefficiencies, though he dismisses suggestions that Musk might overshadow his presidency.

The tech influence extends beyond Musk. The new administration features an unprecedented number of bn’aires in key positions, with around thirteen serving in various roles. The total net worth of the rich members of Trump’s administration could reach USD 460 bn, as per ABC News calculations — a dramatic shift from Joe Biden’s cabinet, which had a total net worth of approximately USD 118 mn.

Despite receiving substantial financial support from tech leaders, Trump maintains that they won’t receive special treatment: “They’re not going to get anything from me. I don’t need money, but I do want the nation to do well, and they’re smart people [who] create a lot of jobs.” This came as a response to Biden’s warning that the US was becoming an “oligarchy of tech bn’aires wielding dangerous levels of power” during his farewell address.

As AI and other technological advances reshape society, the implications of this tech-wealthy coalition extend far beyond traditional policy debates. With Silicon Valley’s most powerful figures now directly shaping government policy, questions remain about how this will affect everything from industry regulation to social media oversight and AI development, especially after Trump issued an executive order yesterday reversing a Biden decision on restriction on AI systems that could pose risks on national security, economy, or public safety.

Power by pandering: In 2017, the Meta CEO publicly opposed Trump’s immigration policies, citing his own family’s immigrant background. Now, Zuckerberg has maneuvered to co-host an exclusive black-tie inaugural event alongside Trump’s top donors, after making a series of moves to curry favor with the new administration, including praising “masculine energy” on Joe Rogan’s podcast, shifting in the tech community’s DEI initiatives to overtly enforce a status quo that has always been exclusionary, and is in line with MAGA’s policies.

Jeff Bezos, who once worried that Trump “erodes [US] democracy around the edges,” has also changed course. Amazon contributed USD 1 mn to the inaugural committee, and agreed to produce a documentary about First Lady Melania Trump.

Why? The stakes for these tech leaders are enormous. Zuckerberg faces a Federal Trade Commission lawsuit against Meta. Bezos’ Amazon is battling antitrust cases. Musk’s Tesla is under federal investigation for its auto-driving technology, while SpaceX competes with Bezos’ Blue Origin for lucrative government contracts as they both try to edge out NASA. The question remains: Will these tech titans’ expensive bet on Trump pay off? Or will they live and see that Trump’s favor can be as fleeting as it is expensive?

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT

Reality TV to take your mind off reality

📺 Looking to take your mind off of big issues? Lucky for you, Dubai’s elite are back for another season of designer labels, extravagant parties, and a whole lot of drama. Dubai Bling follows a group of wealthy friends around the emirate as they deal with family, business, and some over-the-top friendship antics — this is essentially what made the last two seasons such guilty pleasure watches. And they’ve finally dropped a third season.

(Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links to external sources.)

Same-old same-old. The very first scene of the new season is set at a New Year’s Eve dinner hosted by entrepreneur Mona Kattan. Influencer Farhana Bodi refuses to greet her fellow cast member Safa Siddiqui after she allegedly spread rumors about her carrying borrowed Birkins — a serious crime in the fashion world — sparking the first hint of chaos.

We welcome some new additions to the group — each coming with their own personal baggage. But we can’t help but feel that this season doesn’t deliver as much excitement as the previous two did. The show seems to have abandoned any pretense of reality — at one point of particular absurdity, one of the cast members held a funeral for a Lamborghini.

It’s a lighthearted watch. After all, this is a reality TV show, so expectations should be naturally tempered. The bizarreness of the scenes makes it an entertaining comedic watch. But beware, it may get addictive.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can watch the series on Netflix or catch the trailer on YouTube (runtime: 1:29).

Under the Lamplight

Motivation to build your wealth

📚 You’re rich — it’s time to start acting like it. The Rules of Wealth by Richard Templar is a book that condenses the principles and behaviors of the wealthy into an easy-to-follow guide. It offers financial wisdom over five sections: Thinking Wealthy, Getting Wealthy, Getting Even Wealthier, Staying Wealthy, and Sharing Your Wealth.

The strength of the book lies in its simplicity. Templar’s writing is straightforward and steers away from using complicated terms — which broadens its appeal to readers who may be new to wealth-building and financial management. The rules are presented with clarity and the format allows for quick, bite-sized takeaways.

But beware, this book offers advice on behavior rather than actionable steps — so readers may find themself wanted more detailed guidance. Think of this book as a collection of — somewhat repetitive — motivational quotes that inspires the reader rather than giving them deeper insights into specific wealth-building strategies.

You can find this book at Diwan.
