WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Annual urban headline inflation falls to 12.8% in February

Good afternoon, friends, and happy Monday. Amid a general slowdown in the international and domestic presses this month, we have all the latest for you — including Capmas’ inflation figures for February and tidings of the potential collapse of Elon Musk’s business empire.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

Annual headline urban inflation plunged to 12.8% in February, marking an 11.2 percentage point drop from the 24.0% recorded in January, according to data from state statistics agency Capmas. This figure marks the nation’s lowest inflation reading since March 2022 when inflation recorded 10.49%, which marked the beginning of an upward trend that has now been slowing for three consecutive months. On a monthly basis, inflation fell by 0.1 percentage points to 1.4%.

F&B price inflation saw a significant drop: Food and beverage price inflation — the largest component of the basket of goods and services used to calculate headline inflation — fell by 17.1 percentage points to 3.7% y-o-y in February — the weakest pace since June 2021, Capital Economics’ James Swanston wrote in a note seen by EnterpriseAM. “Meanwhile, our measure of non-food inflation declined to a two-year low of 17.3% y-o-y with the largest falls recorded in health, recreation and culture, furnishings, and restaurants and hotels,” the note reads. On a monthly basis, food and beverages prices were up by 0.2%, marking the second consecutive monthly rise in prices.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

Amid a relatively slow newsday in the international press, headlines are covering the arrest and detention of Columbia University graduate student Mahmoud Khalil by Donald Trump’s Department of Homeland Security on accusations that Khalil “led activities aligned to Hamas,” with authorities declining to elaborate further. A Palestinian green card holder married to a US citizen who is currently eight months pregnant, Khalil had been among the leaders of Columbia’s pro-Palestine protests over the course of Israel’s war on Gaza — a position that Khalil feared had put him in the crosshairs of the Trump administration, according to comments he made to Reuters in the hours before his arrest. In a post on X sharing news of Khalil’s arrest, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that US authorities “will be revoking the visas and/or green cards of Hamas supporters in America so they can be deported.” Neither the State Department nor the Department of Homeland Security has accused Khalil of providing material aid to Hamas — the only kind of pro-Palestine activity that violates US law. ELSEWHERE- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is making his way to Riyadh today ahead of tomorrow’s talks with US officials over ending the Russia-Ukraine war. The news comes shortly after Donald Trump’s announcement that the US has “just about” lifted all restrictions on US intelligence sharing with Ukraine.

  • Capital Economics gives Egypt a progress report: London-based research outfit Capital Economics’ MENA team hosted a 20-minute briefing (watch, runtime: 22:51) discussing Egypt’s progress on implementing economic reforms and policy one year after the Central Bank of Egypt’s decision to float the EGP and adopt a flexible exchange rate regime.
  • Egypt has reportedly set a pricing and payment mechanism for securing LNG supply agreements for the summer months. Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (Egas) sent the conditions to global LNG suppliers in a bid to secure direct contract offers instead of issuing public tenders.
  • Earnings, earnings, earnings. More companies are out with their 2024 earnings — we have the annual earnings of real estate giants Palm Hills Developments and Madinet Masr, as well as coverage of Edita Food Industries’ financials for the year.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

The imminent downfall of Elon Musk

Musk is getting a market reality check. With Tesla’s shares nosediving by nearly 40% over the past few weeks, yet another SpaceX rocket explosion, and DOGE’s accidental leak of a CIA black site, structural cracks in Elon Musk’s empire have started to widen. The effective erasure of all of Musk’s post-election gains suggest that his foundations — built largely on investor enthusiasm, market sentiment, and a volatile online following — may be more fragile than previously assumed.

Unlike contemporaries who created sustainable business juggernauts, Musk’s wealth derives significantly from market perception and investor devotion, writes Dr. Mihir Desai, a professor at Harvard Business School and Harvard Law School, in The New York Times. While Tesla changed the game for electric vehicles, and SpaceX paved the way for commercial space exploration, Musk’s real talent has been selling flashy, impossible pipe dreams to investors, where “any setback is trivial and every accomplishment heroic.”

The proof is in his crown jewel: Musk acquired the ownership stake of Tesla from founders Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning in 2004, and has acted as CEO since 2008. In 2009, Eberhard filed suit against Musk, who had erroneously started calling himself the founder of Tesla. But through the settlement, Musk bought himself — and two other executives not involved in the establishment of the company — the license of being called founders. In 2021, Musk changed his title at the company from CEO to Techno King.

Once a sign of Musk’s entrepreneurial prowess, Tesla is now showing serious signs of vulnerability. Sales are slipping, profits are down, and the company is slashing prices to stay competitive — a strategy that risks harming the brand in the long run — as traditional automakers like BMW and Mercedes foray into the industry and aggressive Chinese competitors impress the market. The plummeting Tesla stock has cost the oligarch USD 102 bn of his net worth just this year, reports Business Insider.

The cracks extend throughout Musk’s portfolio. X, formerly known as Twitter, was once hailed as the online town square. Since Musk’s USD 44 bn acquisition and chaotic takeover in 4Q 2022, users have fled to Bluesky and Threads, and Musk’s policy changes and personal politics has led to a hemorrhaging of advertisers. As a result, the platform has lost approximately 80% of its value in two years. Neuralink, his brain implant venture that has killed more than 1.5k animals, still lacks a clear path to profitability. The Boring Company, self-hyped as the future of urban transport, has produced minimal results despite significant investment. Remember SolarCity ? Exactly. Acquired by Tesla in a controversial move, the solar business company has largely faded from relevance. Even SpaceX raises questions about sustainable profitability outside government contracts and Starlink subscriptions.

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT

They’ll live happily ever after… once they have the funds

📺 She’ll do anything to leave her overcrowded home. 80 Bako is one of Ramadan 2025’s light watches, following Basmallah (Huda El Mufti), a young hairdresser whose parents passed away, leading to her and her sister moving into their cousin’s crowded apartment.

The wrench in the works: Basmallah — or Bosy, as they call her— is engaged to be married to Tikha (Khaled Mokhtar). Before the wedding can take place, Tikha needs to kick the current renters out of his apartment. The cost? EGP 80k. The episodes revolve around the couple working around the clock to raise that money — Bosy starts doing home visit salon appointments despite Tikha’s complete disapproval, getting away with it as he’s distracted trying to open up a private business with his friend.

We meet interesting characters along the way. Being set in a hair salon, the series welcomes many entertaining guest characters that add to the tapestry of the show, often comedically, like the woman who refuses to cut one specific nail because it reminds her of her late mother, or another asking for a full makeover because of her husband’s infidelity.

It’s a fun watch. El Mufti delivers an incredible performance as Bosy. But the character that we believe truly carried the show was the salon’s owner, Lola (Entsar). Her performance was impeccable and very accurate — making light of real situations much of the audience might be overly familiar with.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can find the series on Shahid, or catch the trailer on YouTube (runtime: 2:05).

EAT THIS TONIGHT

Hawawshi nachos and taamiya tacos at The Tap x Zooba

🥙 This may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of suhoor, but it could stick with you until next year. The Tap and Zooba have launched an unlikely collab this Ramadan, giving Zooba’s traditional Egyptian dishes with a Mexican spin that couldn’t have come sooner.

What to order: Our order consisted of the hawawshi nachos and taamiya tacos — the first is a bowl of nachos topped with a generous helping of spiced hawawshi meat and cheese for a picturesque and flavor-packed pull, and the second a more familiar taamiya tucked into a tortilla taco, covered in lettuce, shredded cheese, and cheddar sauce.

If you’re a traditionalist, you’ll be able to get regular suhoor items. We couldn’t resist getting our usual Zooba order of ful with pickled lemon and eggs with basterma. If you haven’t tried their olive labna dip, you’re missing out on what can be a year-round favorite. The dip comes with a side of crunchy toasted baladi bread for the perfect creamy, sour, savory bite.

Dessert doesn’t leave much room for creativity. But that doesn’t mean we didn’t appreciate the rice pudding we know and love to end the meal on a sweet note.

WHERE TO FIND IT- You can try this collaboration at The Tap East or The Tap West.
