WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Annual inflation rebounds to 13.6% in March

Well, friends, we’ve made it through another week together — one of the most intense the markets have ever seen. But before we jump into the weekend we still have a slew of economic updates for you this afternoon, so let’s dive in.

THE BIG STORY TODAY-

Annual headline urban inflation reversed its downward trajectory to hit 13.6% in March, marking an 0.8 percentage point increase from the 12.8% recorded in February, according to data from state statistics agency Capmas. The March figure marks the nation's first increase in inflation reading since October 2024 when inflation recorded 26.5%. It also comes following a sharp dip in February on a favorable base effect. On a monthly basis, inflation edged up by 0.2 percentage points to 1.6%.

F&B price inflation saw an uptick: Food and beverage price inflation — the largest component of the basket of goods and services used to calculate headline inflation — went up by 2.9 percentage points to 6.6% in March, from 3.7% in February. “This came on the back of rises in bread and cereals, vegetables, and in particular fruits inflation which surged to a record high of 88.0% y-o-y,” Capital Economics’ James Swanston wrote in a note seen by EnterpriseAM. “In contrast, our measure of non-food inflation eased to a two-year low, of 17.0% y/y, as almost all categories recorded weaker inflation as the falls in the EGP last year continue to drop out of the annual price comparison,” Swanston added.

The EGP bounced back against the USD today, edging up to EGP 51.23-51.33, after slipping to 51.72-51.75 yesterday — its weakest level since the March 2024 float. The rebound follows improved investor sentiment after Trump announced a surprise 90-day pause on additional tariffs on most countries. The news eased pressure on the interbank market and attracted hot money back into the country.

AND- Palm Hills Developments elected a new board of directors for a three-year term after shareholders voted at the company's ordinary general assembly meeting this week, according to an EGX disclosure (pdf).

Those at the helm are retaining their roles Yasseen Mansour is staying on board as the company’s chairman and managing director, while Mohamed Mansour has been reappointed as vice chairman.

New on board: UNODC Executive Director and former Social Solidarity Minister Ghada Waly (LinkedIn) has been appointed as an independent non-executive board member. Meanwhile, Ismail Mansour is joining as a board member representing El Mansour & El Maghraby Investment and Development.

The company is putting together fresh funds for Hacienda White with Banque Misr: The board greenlit a long-term syndicated loan of up to EGP 1.3 bn for its subsidiary Middle East for Real Estate and Tourism Investment to be co-financed with Banque Misr, according to a separate EGX disclosure (pdf). The funds will go into financing the addition of 200 rooms at the Casa Cook hotel in Hacienda White on the North Coast.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

US-China trade war intensifies as tariffs force Chinese exporters to adapt: Sellers on platforms like Amazon, Shein, and Temu are raising prices to US consumers by up to 70%, canceling shipments, or planning to exit the US market entirely as trade becomes financially unsustainable following the Trump administration’s tariffs, the Financial Times reports. Some manufacturers are attempting to evade tariffs by relocating production to third countries, or rerouting goods through nations with US trade agreements. The sweeping supply chain disruptions follow US President Donald Trump’s decision to hike China’s tariff to 125%, up from 104%, after Beijing pushed ahead with a retaliatory tariff of 84% on US goods.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Bad journalism brought direwolves back to life

Three days ago, Time Magazine broke the alleged story that Colossal Biosciences had “de-extincted” the direwolf. But that’s not true. On their cover, Time struck through the word “Extinct” and claimed Remus, their canine photo subject, was “the first [direwolf] to exist in over 10k years,” writing in their story that the company had “for the first time, effectively… [reanimated] a line of beasts whose live gene pool long ago vanished.” But these claims do not hold up to scrutiny, and the misleading framing of the story has drawn criticism from scientists and journalists alike.

How to de-extinct a direwolf, a tutorial: To make the three puppies at the center of attention, the scientists at Colossal manufactured a partial direwolf genome from prehistoric fossils of the species and edited the DNA of existing gray wolf embryos to include traits found in their samples. Actual direwolf DNA was not used except only to act as a guideline for which gray wolf genes to edit to exhibit distinctive direwolf traits. “This is not a de-extincted direwolf,” Co-director of the Otago Palaeogenetics Laboratory Nic Rawlence told the New Zealand Science Media Center. “It’s a hybrid.”

Experts say that the newly created animals are only like direwolves in appearance. Why? Gray wolves and direwolves aren’t actually that closely related. "New information shows that the original direwolf itself was not really a wolf," said David Mech, wolf ecology and behavior specialist and research scientist, to Live Science. Not only are direwolves a different species from gray wolves, but a completely different genus. "Colossal compared the genomes of the direwolf and the gray wolf, and from about 19k genes, they determined that 20 changes in 14 genes gave them a direwolf," Rawlence said.

Bad marketing… Colossal’s own claims were misleading, reporting on their own site that they had “successfully restored a once-eradicated species through the science of de-extinction” and boasting that “after a 10k+ year absence, [the] team is proud to return the direwolf to its rightful place in the ecosystem.” After claiming that the gray wolf was chosen to be the host for direwolf traits due to the two animals being “genetically really similar,” the biotech company admitted in a blog update this morning that direwolves “haven’t had a genetically-similar relative in mns of years.”

…and bad reporting. News outlets publishing articles titled “The Return of the Direwolf” and “ How a Des Moines professor helped de-extinct the dire wolf ” or “ The Dire Wolf is Back ” are complicit in the spreading of misinformation for the sake of a catchy headline. The erosion of public trust is increasingly becoming an issue in the age of the internet — readers are losing confidence in media institutions, with many journalists noting a “ trust recession ” making people skeptical of all information sources. A study published in November of 2024 revealed that more than 75% of the time, a link was circulated without being clicked on or read. Contributing to the repeated exposure of a false claim to garner engagement is not only disingenuous, but will have long-term effects on the credibility of the news and science industries.

It’s still breakthrough technology, just not how we are being told it would be. The puppies signify the “wholesale creation of a new species,” said science communicator and YouTuber Hank Green, which signifies revolutionary breakthroughs in fields like genome engineering and embryology. While Colossal seems determined to use this technology to “bring back” extinct animals, Philip Seddon, a professor of zoology at the University of Otago, suggests that the technology “might have applications for the conservation of existing [endangered] species.”

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT

The harrowing reality of raising boys

? Adolescence is terrifying because it’s a real story that happens over and over again. Many TV shows try to depict the horrors of deep-seated contempt for women, but few have ever done so from the point of view of the perpetrator. Adolescence is a Netflix four-episode crime drama that examines a chilling murder of a suburban teenage girl, and the investigation and arrest of her classmate Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper).

The film doesn’t put the blame on manhood, but on the way it has been corrupted and polluted by polarizing content on the internet. The rise of the manosphere — a category of platforms designed to promote a militant form of masculinity and encourage misogyny — has become increasingly accessible to impressionable young men. Despite being raised by loving parents and having a friendly relationship with his sister, Jamie was still radicalized by the content he was exposed to, with the series slowly revealing the insidiousness of that ideology.

Not only is Adolescence a narrative masterpiece, but it’s a masterclass in cinematography. Besides the no-frills depiction of a very real problem, each hour-long episode is shot entirely in one take. The camerawork, staging, and acting are impeccable throughout, with intensely powerful performances by Cooper, Stephen Graham, who plays Jamie’s father Eddie, and Ashley Walters, the lead detective in Jamie’s investigation.

“He was in his room, wasn’t he?” Jamie’s father asks. “We thought he was safe.” Adolescence is a tough but necessary watch, a cautionary tale for parents raising young men in the age of an unmoderated internet. It analyzes the copious murders of young women across continents, begging the question: “Who is teaching our boys to kill?”

WHERE TO WATCH- You can find Adolescence on Netflix, or watch the trailer on YouTube (runtime: 2:27).
