WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

FinMin in talks with contractors to implement VAT amendments

Good afternoon, friends, and happy almost weekend. It’s a busy afternoon in the global press, with Trump’s trade war on India still in the spotlight.

THE BIG STORY TODAY-

The Finance Ministry has been meeting with contractors and real estate developers to finalize the executive regulations for the latest VAT amendments, government sources told EnterpriseAM. Representatives of the Egyptian Federation for Construction and Building Contractors and the Egyptian Tax Authority (ETA) were also in attendance.

REMEMBER- VAT amendments were ratified in July, subjecting construction and contracting services to the standard 14% VAT rate. Under the previous system, construction and contracting services were taxed at a flat 5% schedule rate without allowing companies to deduct input VAT.

The meetings addressed several key challenges, such as the intertwined details of the e-invoicing system, the awarding entities, and the tax calculation method for projects that were awarded before the VAT amendments passed or are still under construction. While the ETA insists on enforcing the new law from the date of issuance, investors are pushing for a more lenient approach to address issues related to projects that are already underway, our sources said.

What's next? All issues surrounding the VAT amendments to construction and contracting services will be resolved by next month with technical support committees set up to assist small contractors to join the new tax system, government sources told EnterpriseAM.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD-

It’s a busy afternoon in the global press, with a hodge podge of stories getting plenty of ink. Among the stories getting top billing:

US President Donald Trump’s hefty 50% tariffs on imports from India are now in effect. The punitive 25% tariffs, dealt to India over its purchases of discounted Russian oil, add to an existing 25% already in effect since earlier this month. This brings the total tariffs to 50%, putting them among the highest ever charged by the US — and on par with the tariffs on Brazil and China. The move risks significant damage to India's economy and global supply chains. (Guardian | CNN | New York Times | BBC | Reuters | Financial Times)

MEANWHILE- The Trump administration put over a dozen Federal Emergency Management Agency employees on leave after 182 current and past employees signed an open letter on Monday criticizing the agency’s direction and its leaders’ “inexperience.” The letter calls for qualified leadership, noting that the agency is well on its way to a “Katrina-level disaster.” (Washington Post | Associated Press | Axios)

REGIONALLY- Trump is set to chair a meeting on Gaza in the White House today, with hopes of settling the war “one way or another” by year’s end. “It’s a very comprehensive plan we’re putting together,” US special envoy Steve Witkoff said in an interview with Fox News on Tuesday. The news follows Israel ramping up its offensive in Gaza, having called on 60k reservists to join the war. (Reuters | Guardian)

☀️ TOMORROW’S WEATHER- The weather is cooling down as we approach fall territory, with temperatures in Cairo peaking at just 33°C, before dropping to 21°C. Up north, we’re in for a high of 28°C and a low of 25°C, according to our favorite weather app.

Subscription prices are piling up — and it’s not good news for streaming services

🍿More money, more problems: The year 2025 is seeing streaming services push up their subscription prices as consumers navigate a tight spot. While prices rack up, cancellation processes are getting more complicated. Content removal, subscription tiers with ads, password-sharing crackdowns, and cancellation issues are making the increases difficult to justify — and are pushing consumers to piracy.

A wave of subscription hikes. Apple TV+’s subscription price increase is under thespotlight, going up by USD 3 a month from USD 9.99 to USD 12.99, with annual pricing remaining the same. Peacock is also raising subscription prices from USD 13.99 to USD 16.99 just for its ad-supported tier, making it the most expensive out of all major streaming platforms.

Introducing new features and services, Spotify is also set on increasing its subscription prices in certain markets after years of staying consistent, going up by EUR 1 in almost every region but North America, according to CNBC. Netflix, Disney+, and Paramount+ have also raised prices over the past year. Lower tiers in most streaming platforms come with ads, while AppleTV+ remains the only one to provide all ad-free tiers.

Do new features justify price hikes? After lagging behind streaming giants like Netflix and Disney+ in content volume, Apple TV+ is following a “less is more” approach with high-production viral shows like Severance and Ted Lasso, yet it is reportedly losing up to USD 1 bn a year on them. Already a powerhouse music streaming platform, Spotify is anticipated to allow users to make and customize transitions between tracks, and just announced the launch of a new messaging feature.

To make matters worse, streaming services are making it harder to cancel subscriptions. At the end of the day, the bottom line is all that matters. Because streaming services have been known to purposefully design complicated procedures to keep users in unwanted subscriptions, the US Federal Trade Commission proposed a ‘click to cancel’ rule in favor of consumer protection.

However, a federal appeals court recently struck down the rule, denying users a simple mechanism to cancel subscription and suspend charges. The rule would have also ended automatic subscription renewals. Amazon subscriptions are notoriously the hardest to cancel, requiring users to go through a four-page, 15-option cancellation process. Disney+ isn’t far behind, with its cancellation option hidden behind pages of fineprint.

In a sea of overpriced services, piracy is back in view. With the fantasy of streaming having fallen short, going back to the old ways of pirating sounds like a much easier option for many consumers. According to a report (pdf) by anti-piracy company Muso, piracy websites have accumulated some 216 bn visits in 2024. Online users now often encourage pirating, rejecting the profit-driven streaming services of today.

Under the Lamplight

New beginnings in The Wedding People

💡 Is there more to life after you’ve accomplished everything you thought you wanted? Years after Phoebe gets her PhD and marries the man she fell in love with, she realizes she feels unfulfilled with her current life. When her marriage ends, she stumbles upon a newfound happiness at an extravagant, week-long wedding. In The Wedding People by Allison Espach, the main character along with the readers are confronted with uncomfortable questions about marriage, loss, self-worth, and success.

An almost picture-perfect life. The book sets off as Phoebe arrives at the Cornwall Inn, fleeing her hometown St. Louis, and recovering from a divorce from a ten-year marriage. We gradually learn about her life through flashback narrations amidst her overcharged internal monologues. Depressed, lonely, and existential, Phoebe decides to come to her dream hotel to end her life.

The hotel she’s staying at happens to be entirely booked for a wedding, and she finds herself the only stranger amongst “the wedding people.” She is bothered by the contrast between the happy backdrop of a wedding and her intentions coming to the hotel. In a turn of events, she takes the elevator with the bride Lila, not realizing that it would be the start of a new friendship and a new trajectory into healing herself.

Revival through chance connections: Phoebe’s idea of a happy and successful life is crushed once years of clinging to her achievements as a young woman start losing meaning. Spending her days passively and living a routine life, she escapes through books with happy endings and familiar characters. Meeting Lila and witnessing her excessive worldly concerns and casual nature, Phoebe is forced back into the real world and its wholesome trivialities.

The book captures two seemingly opposite women who find guidance in each other’s differences. Lila both literally and figuratively brings Phoebe, once so hollow and stale, back to life. The author combines humor with candor, making it easy to sympathize and connect with Phoebe. As she navigates through old traumas and new awakenings, Phoebe’s character inspires resilience in the face of hopelessness.

WHERE TO GET IT- You can get The Wedding People at Al Masriah Al Lubnaniah, Diwan, Bibliothek, and BookSpot. You can also find the ebook on Amazon, Kobo, and Google Books.
