WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Customs overhaul targets 75% reduction in export clearance times

Happy hump day, folks — and welcome back. It should come as no surprise that regional tensions remain on the rise, and we’ve got the latest for you below. Today, we’re taking a look at a species endangered by the situation in the region — the unicorn — and what the volatility means for Egypt’s startup ambitions. Beyond the headlines, we pay a visit to Downtown Cairo’s Samak Laban, a pleasantly peculiar restaurant (and design studio).

Without further ado, the news

THE BIG STORY TODAY-

📍 The Egyptian Customs Authority rolled out its upgraded export system at the Ain Sokhna port today, with plans to gradually expand to all the country’s ports, a government source tells EnterpriseAM. The move is designed to decouple export and import customs and fast-track shipments toward a USD 145 bn annual target by 2030, our source adds.

Goodbye paperwork: By replacing manual paperwork with a fully automated platform linked to 32 government entities via Nafeza, the Finance Ministry aims to slash clearance times from eight days to just 48 hours — and eventually to a matter of hours — while mandating a Unified Cargo Reference for all outgoing shipments.

Beyond the logistical lift, the system promises a significant liquidity boost for manufacturers by enabling the “immediate disbursement” of export incentives, bypassing the traditional six-month auditing cycle, all without imposing additional fees beyond standard Nafeza charges.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD-

🌐 As the deadline for US President Donald Trump’s threat to “take out Iran in one night” looms, oil prices are climbing and investor fears are reigniting amid stagnant peace talks and continued attacks across the Gulf. Brent prices rose 1% to nearly USD 111 a barrel this afternoon, while WTI jumped to USD 116 as of the time of publication. Trump has since doubled down on his threat if Tehran does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz by 8pm tonight. In a new post on Truth Social, the US president warned that “a whole civilization will die tonight,” calling the moment “one of the most important in the history of the world.”

Enterprise explains

Can Egypt still mint five unicorns by 2031?

🦄 The Egyptian government wants five unicorns by 2031, but regional volatility might have upended these plans. While the newly launched Startup Charter provides the roadmap complete with tax breaks and VC incentives, recent events have hit the brakes on FDI inflows, leading Egypt’s game plan to shift to a defensive position.

The unicorn hunt in Om el Donia

Egypt has some pretty high ambitions, but they’re attainable. To hit this target, the charter introduces financial incentives, streamlined procedures, and the first official definition of a startup. It also promises a unified guide for permits and the activation of venture capital (VC) mechanisms. This framework — combined with local talent and existing success stories like MNT-Halan (and formerly Swvl) — creates a compelling environment. Under normal circumstances, that is.

The winds of change

While the startup ecosystem has recently seen a resurgence, escalating regional tensions represent a fundamental threat to this momentum. On the investor side, uncertainty is driving a wait-and-see approach, which in turn stretches out funding cycles, Speedinvest partner Rana Abdel Latif (LinkedIn) tells EnterpriseAM.

Foreign capital is being particularly cautious, she adds, as investors apply a regional risk markdown — a pricing adjustment that may or may not reflect the actual fundamentals of individual markets like Egypt. This cooling of international appetite is a serious challenge, given that foreign investors accounted for roughly 49% of total regional funding in 2025, primarily in late-stage rounds.

The fix? Being proactive, rather than reactive, is crucial to navigating these fluctuations, Abdel Latif says. Government initiatives must kick in early, offering targeted support such as activating fund-of-funds, providing tax exemptions, and securing commercial agreements with startups, alongside easier access to debt, she notes.

And for the startups? The current climate mandates a pivot back to profitability and unit economics, delaying growth plans to preserve runway during prolonged fundraising windows, says Abdel Latif. This landscape could also present windows for market consolidation. As available capital thins out, leading players may be able to snap up larger market shares through M&A.

A broader look

How many unicorns are out in the wild? There are some 1,728 companies worldwide with valuations exceeding the bn-USD mark, according to the Crunchbase Unicorn Board. The US leads the pack with 880+ companies — over half the global total. China, India, and Europe follow behind.

The UAE and Saudi Arabia dominate the regional landscape. The UAE boasts seven unicorns — including Kitopi, Tabby, and G42 — while Saudi Arabia claims four — such as Ninja, Foodics, and Tamara, according to Crunchbase.

AI is king: Artificial Intelligence is the ultimate investor appetite-whetter, leading with 308 unicorns and nearly USD 400 bn in total investment. OpenAI (with a valuation of USD 500 bn) and Anthropic (with a valuation of USD 183 bn) are the exceptional and undisputed titans.

So is defense: Rising security concerns have pushed VCs to pour capital into European defense tech, often sidelined by environmental, social, and governance criteria in the past. The result? Over USD 4.2 bn were poured into defense startups in the first nine months of last year alone, giving rise to a new breed of unicorns like Quantum-Systems and Helsing.

Reality check + future outlook

The unicorn world is having a bit of a mid-life crisis. While valuations continue to climb and capital flows thanks to the AI boom, regional conflicts are casting a shadow over VC activity, recalibrating investor compasses.

This divergent landscape requires a dual-track defensive strategy from both startups and governments to build an ecosystem relatively insulated from global volatility. In the meantime, we can only hope for a break that allows entrepreneurs to thrive.

EAT THIS TONIGHT

Samak Laban is every foodie and design lover’s dream

🍽️ Few places manage to bring together unrelated parts to form one cohesive whole — Samak Laban does so with ease. The Downtown spot — part furniture showroom, part design studio, part full-service restaurant — brings a new type of experience rooted in good food and functional art.

How the cookie crumbled: Our visit to the showroom stemmed mostly out of curiosity, and it was quickly satisfied. As we climbed to the seating area atop their loft, we were met with striking furniture pieces and inventive designs scattered throughout. Settling in, we had the perfect vantage point to take in the studio’s curated design pieces.

What to expect: “Samak, laban, we tamr hindi” — the idiom rang a bell, but it wasn’t until we read the menu and the dishes hit our table that everything started making sense. Light on main dishes and heavy on starters, the menu boasts a medley of out-of-the-box combinations and re-imagined Egyptian staples.

As promised, it’s a whole lot of everything: Wasabi labneh with avocado, caramelized carrot dip, aubergine mille-feuille, and baladi sausage gyoza were just a few of the dishes we fell in love with. The gyoza was dipped in a sweet potato puree, the sweet carrot dip was met with earthy soy mushrooms, and the mild labneh was perfectly offset by the wasabi’s sharpness.

Everything stood out, but we were particularly impressed by the gochujang fried chicken sandwich — simple, homey, and light — and the restaurant’s namesake ceviche, which offered a contrast of zesty and sweet flavors. The cherry on top? Their halawa cheesecake — an unexpected combination that proved a hit.

Our verdict: Samak Laban is definitely not your everyday go-to eatery, it’s better. Don’t come expecting a heavy, stomach-stretching meal — go for a one-of-a-kind culinary experience, if not to feast your eyes on the showroom’s statement pieces. Which is to say: you won’t be disappointed.

WHERE TO FIND- You can find Samak Laban in Downtown Cairo.
