WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Up to EUR 1 bn in WtE investments could be headed our way

Good afternoon folks, and a happy Wednesday to all of you. We have a busy issue for you today, with all the latest on potential mega-investments in Egyptian WtE plants, a budding Apple-Android rapprochement, and over-the-top Ramadan desserts.

THE BIG STORY TODAY-

Austria is mulling up to EUR 1 bn in WtE investments: A consortium of Austrian companies is planning on developing four waste-to-energy (WtE) plants in Egypt with an investment ticket of EUR 150-250 mn each, renewable energy expert Al Gohary Al Shebiny told Al Borsa on the sidelines of the Arab Forum for Pioneers in Economics, Investment, and International Cooperation. The companies have initial plans for plants in Cairo, Giza, Gharbia, and Dakahlia, with potential for later expansions.

Things are already in motion: The Austrian investors have already conducted feasibility studies for the projects, which they will submit to the Egyptian government in order to obtain land, start construction, and set up production lines, Al Shebiny said. They are also hoping to ink a 20-25 year land usufruct agreement for the projects to allow time to recover from the high investment costs.

Remember: The Environment and Finance Ministries have said that they want to boost WtEinvestments by amending laws regulating public contracts and increasing the feed-in tariff rate. Land for WtE projects has already been allocated across eight governorates for completion over the next three or four years.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD-

The EU announced retaliatory tariffs against the US hours after US President Donald Trump’s 25% tariffs on steel and aluminium went into effect. The tariffs will impact some EUR 26 bn worth of goods and are set to come into effect in April, offering some time for the economic bloc to negotiate terms with the Trump administration. (FT | WSJ | Reuters)

Canada could be next to follow suit, with officials telling Reuters that the country plans toimpose CAD 29.8 bn (USD 20.7 bn) in retaliatory tariffs in response to Trump’s new tariffs on steel and aluminum.

A Russia-Ukraine ceasefire could still be a ways off: Sources close to Russian President Vladimir Putin tell Reuters that Trump’s Russia-Ukraine ceasefire proposal — which has reportedly been greenlit by Kyiv — is unlikely to pass muster with Moscow, with a senior Russian source telling the newswire that Putin will want clear guarantees given his “strong position” in the war.

AND IN BUSINESS NEWS- Swedish battery startup Northvolt has filed for bankruptcy in Sweden after months of negotiations with backers aimed at salvaging a company once seen as Europe’s best bet for competing with China on EV battery manufacturing. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the US in November. (FT | Reuters)

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Apple TV+ is now streaming on Android

Apple is extending an olive branch to Android. As of yesterday, Android users can download Apple TV+, and gain full access to the films, TV shows, and live sports available on the platform, Ars Technica reports.

It’s not unprecedented… Flagship services like iMessage and FaceTime have been exclusive to Apple users to ensure consumer retention, but the tech giant has been far more lenient with their media services. iTunes was always available for download on Windows-run hardware, and Apple Music has been available to Android users since 2015.

…But it’s not out of just the goodness of their hearts. Apple’s services division, which includes everything from iCloud to Apple Music, thrives on subscriptions. By rolling out their streaming service on Android phones and tablets, Apple is crossing enemy lines to tap into a market that was wholly disconnected from their ecosystem.

What to expect as an Android user: Apple is, for the first time, allowing subscriptions through Google’s payment system. Google TV users will remember that, previously, all subscriptions had to be made through a different device. Football fans will be happy to see Apple’s MLS Season Pass — Apple’s foray into sports streaming — on the roster, giving them access to every major league soccer game — though as a separate service.

The pricing: You can subscribe to AppleTV+ for USD 9.99 per month, with a complimentary seven-day trial to ease you in. The Apple One bundle, which includes 2TB of iCloud storage, an Apple Music subscription, and access to Apple Arcade, is priced at USD 19.95 per month. The MLS Season Pass is available for USD 14.99 per month or USD 99 per season, with a markdown of USD 2 per month or USD 20 per year if you’re already subscribed to Apple TV+.

Does Apple need the subscribers? AppleTV+ has been behind many celebrated TV shows like Severance, Ted Lasso, and Shrinking, but is still lagging far behind rivals like Netflix and Disney+. A 2024 report from Bloomberg noted that Apple TV+ generates less viewing in one month that Netflix does in a single day. But, according to Forbes, the platform lost over half a mn subscribers last year alone, despite spending over USD 20 bn in original content. Ars Technica and Fast Company theorize that this may be a marketing issue — last year, Apple spent USD 19.9 mn on Apple TV+ commercials, just half of what was spent on the latest iPhone.

It’s also a quality issue — Apple is committed to quality over quantity. Apple’s library consists of 80 films and 180 TV shows, all exclusive to their streaming service, while Netflix offers 18k choices to pick from. Last November, Bloomberg cited a source familiar to the matter who claimed that Apple is shopping its roster to foreign TV networks for licensing, but isn’t considering third party platforms as candidates. Unlike strategies being executed by other big streaming companies like Netflix and Disney+ to slash original content budgets and hedge safer bets, Apple is planning to “get people familiar with its smaller but powerful content slate while being more budget-conscious.” Enter Android.

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT

An accountant is dragged into a cocoon of lies and deceit

? An accountant is dealt a balance sheet that could cost him his life. Al Sharnaqa centers around Hazem (Ahmed Dawood), an accountant who uncovers dirty business dealings at his company. What starts as an ordinary workday spirals into a dangerous game of cat and mouse, where every number hides a secret — and every secret is a threat.

The stakes are high. Hazem is not a hero — he’s a man who deals in numbers, is unhappy with his financial situation, and dreams of becoming rich. So when he finds illegal transactions linking his company to the arms and drug trades, he’s forced to choose between helping cover up the company’s transgressions — potentially to his own benefit — or doing the right thing and blowing the whistle.

The power players. Ahmed Dawood shines in his role as Hazem, which pushes him beyond his usual charm and proves that he can play more than just a charismatic lead. The series also has an impressive ensemble cast, including Sabry Fawwaz as Mohsen Morgan — Hazem’s boss — and Sara Abi Kanaan as a key player in unraveling the secrets. Supporting roles from Mariam El Khosht, Ali El Tayeb, and Salah Abdallah add to the intrigue and intensity of the show.

It’s a slow burn that pays off. The show’s first episodes lay the foundation of the story, which could be a bit tedious for some. But once the tension kicks in, the show is truly gripping — some might even say addictive. The cinematography also piles on the suspense, turning downtown Cairo into a co-main character in and of itself.

A must-watch or a pass? If you love thrillers that involve corporate crime and psychological drama, then yes. It’s rare to find a Ramadan series that doesn’t rely on melodrama but instead keeps you on the edge of your seat — making this series a truly unique watch.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can view the series exclusively on WatchIt, or catch the trailer on YouTube.

EAT THIS TONIGHT

A cheesecake with an oriental twist

? If you’re on the hunt for this year’s tastiest kunafa creations, don't pass on Tortina’s Kunafa Kiri Pistachio. This rich dessert is a tray of layered goodness with golden, crispy kunafa drizzled with sweet syrup, with a thick layer of smooth Kiri cream cheese filling.

If that wasn’t enough, a generous spread of pistachio cream is layered on top, along with a thin layer of milk chocolate ganache. This cheesecake’s oriental twist gives a nod to the Dubai chocolate trend, but the balance between textures and flavors makes it stand out.

Taste test: This dessert delivers exactly what you want from a kunafa-cheesecake fusion: crunchy, creamy, and unapologetically sweet. The kunafa doesn’t lose its signature crispness, while the Kiri filling brings a velvety — some could say fluffy — tang that cuts through the sweetness. The pistachio spread adds a nuttiness paired with the milk chocolate ganache that ties everything together to taste like crunchy sweet mousse. It’s indulgent without being overwhelming, making it easy to go back for seconds (or even thirds).

WHERE TO FIND IT- You can find it at your nearest Tortina branch or order it through Talabat.

More Champions League second legs + more drama in the Nile League

Champions League drama is back and better than ever: The race for European glory continues tonight, with four second-leg clashes left in the Champions League’s round of 16. Last night saw Barcelona, PSG, Inter, and Bayern book their spots in the quarterfinals, eliminating Benfica, Liverpool, Feyenoord, and Bayer Leverkusen respectively.

Tonight’s action kicks off at 7:45pm, as Lille hosts Borussia Dortmund after the club’s 1-1 draw in the first leg. The remaining three showdowns begin at 10pm, headlined by a fierce Madrid Derby that will see Atletico Madrid welcome their bitter cross-city rivals Real Madrid to the Estadio Metropolitano, looking to overturn a 2-1 first-leg defeat at the Bernabeu.

Meanwhile, Arsenal faces PSV Eindhoven at the Emirates stadium in what is shaping up to be something of a friendly, following the Gunners’ 7-1 away victory. Over in Birmingham, Aston Villa take on Club Brugge, holding a comfortable advantage after a 3-1 victory in Belgium.

An Egyptian League showdown is also on the cards after a controversial night yesterday: League leaders Pyramids lock horns with Al Masry in the opening round of the championship phase at 9:30pm tonight. Al Ahly had been just three points behind Pyramids — currently on top with 42 points — before the club’s controversial forfeit in its game against Zamalek last night, which will see the Red Devils deducted three points per league regulations. This leaves Al Ahly with 36 points — six points beneath Pyramids and just one point ahead of third-placed Zamalek.

Other matches kicking off at 9:30pm:

  • Pharco vs. National Bank SC (Championship group)
  • Ghazl El Mahalla vs. ZED FC (Relegation group)
