WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Fresh details on our auto feeder industry localization plans

Good afternoon everyone, and hope you’re having a wonderful Monday. We have a busy issue for you today, so without further ado, let’s jump in.

HAPPENING NOW

The ministerial conference for strengthening the humanitarian response in Gaza is taking place today in Cairo under the patronage of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, with a number of ministries and around 103 foreign delegations in attendance. The conference will focus on securing commitments for aid to Gaza, mobilizing efforts for urgent humanitarian relief and renewed ceasefire talks, and discussing regional security.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

Fresh details on gov’t efforts to localize auto feeder industries: The Industry Ministry unveiled new details about the government’s auto industry localization plans at today’s meeting of the ministerial group for industrial development, including updates on our upcoming tire-production and other auto feeder industry projects, according to a ministry statement.

What we thought was going to be a tire plant is actually going to be a whole tire city: The meeting included fresh details the Arab Organization for Industrialization’s plan to establish a USD 360 mn tire-manufacturing city in partnership with an unnamed Chinese tire production company, which is reportedly set to kick off its first phase within a year. The statement revealed that the city will include three tire factories, a plant for producing tire manufacturing equipment, service and maintenance centers, a steel wire factory, a white carbon production facility, and research and training facilities.

More: The meeting also touched on plans to develop tire factories in Alexandria and Amreya, manufacture solar panel glass, and produce batteries for El Nasr Automotive’s microbuses, all in partnership with regional and international companies. The statement added that El Nasr Automotive will be providing luxury buses for passenger services at high-speed rail stations in Egypt’s new cities.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

The US introduces additional restrictions on transferring memory chips to China: The US has introduced its latest set of restrictions on transferring semiconductor chips to China, curbing exports to 140 companies in the world’s second largest economy, as the Biden administration continues its crackdown on China's semiconductor industry. The move — the fourth such crackdown in three years — will limit the sale of high-bandwidth memory chips used in AI applications and reduce the chip-making tools made available to China. FOR YOUR COMMUTE

How will Google offloading Chrome impact its users?

Haven’t heard about the DOJ court’s antitrust ruling? Google it. Following the decision of the US Department of Justice to identify Google as a monopolist in search and advertising, there have been proposed solutions, including forcing Google to sell Chrome — a crucial part of the Google ecosystem that is used by over 3 bn people. We know what that means for Google, but what does that mean for its users?

(Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links to external sources.)

Recap: Google’s position in the world of search engines is being threatened for purposefully stifling potential competition, using tactics like paying bns to Apple and Samsung to remain the default search engine on their products. Competitors are looking for a chance to defy the “monopoly-funded” grip that Google has on its partners and its users and promote healthier competition in the field.

Severing the Google ecosystem would give users freedom to choose amongst the search engines. This would appear similar to how cookie consent pop-ups look, where users would be prompted to make choices based on their preferences, but are able to stick to the default — fostering more competition. However, Google warns that this could cause disruptions to user experience, despite the fact that users are likely to still choose to use Google for familiarity, according to The New Yorker.

But it could also interrupt your workflow. “This could be the industry’s next Y2K,” technology analyst Carmi Levy told Global News. “So many workflows, so many apps, so many services rely on Chrome as a foundation.” The concern being echoed by many experts is that potential buyers won’t have pockets deep enough to maintain Chrome as a global resource, which might “force the entire industry [to] pivot.” Levy predicts that Microsoft may be an interested buyer, and, in his opinion, the best fit for the mantle.

No need to panic yet. “In the short term, nothing changes,” said Levy. The buyer’s ability to fund Chrome as well as what their data privacy policy is — though we can’t imagine it being worse than Google’s — would be the two main issues to keep an eye on, says the analyst. It may be a while before Chrome changes hands, but it may be time to explore different browsers.

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT

Why JonBenét’s killer was never caught

? Every true crime aficionado knows about JonBenét Ramsey. So do most people old enough to have watched the news in the late 90s. The six-year-old’s shocking murder stayed in the public eye for two years but has remained unsolved since 1996, leaving everyone familiar with the case asking the same question three decades later: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey?

(Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links to external sources.)

This three-part documentary meticulously re-examines the evidence gathered at the Ramsey household, interviewing people who were actively involved in the case (and maybe the crime), including her father, John Ramsey, detectives Bob Whitson, Jeff Kithcart, and Kurt Pillard, several reporters, and the prosecutors hired to convict. Director Joe Berlinger traces every police misstep that may have contributed to the case remaining unsolved, and the media circus that threw John and Patsy Ramsey under the bus for the sake of a good story.

Think you don’t have an opinion? Think again. While some may accuse the documentary of being biased towards the innocence of the Ramsey family, Berlinger states that this is because he himself was led by the media to believe that they had killed their own daughter. After examining the evidence for himself, he wanted to exonerate the Ramseys in the eyes of everyone else who was misled.

Don’t expect an answer. While the documentary will leave you with very strong opinions about who committed this awful crime, no convictions were made, and the case remains unsolved in the eyes of the law.

WHERE TO WATCH IT- You can watch Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey on Netflix, or find the trailer on YouTube (runtime: 2:16).

Under the Lamplight

Life is always handing out second chances

? Niall Williams takes us back to the small, rain-soaked Irish village of Faha. If you’ve read This Is Happiness, you’ll already know of Faha’s cozy charm, but if you’re new here, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a timeless little world. In his newest novel, Time of the Child, it’s December 1962, and a tiny, unexpected arrival shakes up life for doctor Jack Troy and his eldest daughter, Ronnie.

(Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links to external sources.)

When an abandoned baby is brought to their doorstep, Jack does what he does best — he saves her life. But it’s Ronnie, the quiet, unmarried daughter, who names the baby Noelle and becomes her devoted caregiver. As the days grow colder, the baby starts to melt the frost in their lives, bringing warmth and hope.

Around them, the quirky residents of Faha continue their routines: Mrs. Prendergast, the nosy post officer, listens in on phone calls, and Father Tom struggles to remember his sermons. It’s a place where the rain is practically a character itself: mournful, soft, and stale, blurring the line between seasons and time.

This isn’t a book that rushes, it’s more like sitting by the fire while someone tells you a story. The writing is almost poetic with the sharp observations about people and community in a gentle, deeply human story about love, family, and second chances.

WHERE TO FIND IT- You can find this book on Amazon.
