WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

CWA Textiles invests USD 19.9 mn in manufacturing facility in Sokhna Industrial Zone

Good afternoon, friends, and happy almost-weekend. International headlines remain focused on the ongoing Tsunami threat across the Pacific. At home, the news cycle seems to be slowing down.

WATCH THIS SPACE-

We’re inching closer to the grand opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM). The Egyptian cabinet is set to announce today the new opening date for GEM, a government source told Enterprise. Initially scheduled for 3 July and later postponed on account of regional tensions, the museum is slated to open in 4Q 2025 according to the source.

THE BIG STORY TODAY-

Egyptian textile firm CWA Textiles is investing EGP 970 mn (USD 19.9 mn) to build a new manufacturing facility in the Sokhna Industrial Zone, according to a Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) statement. The project will be located on a 15k sqm plot developed by the Main Development Company. Operations are slated to begin by 3Q 2026.

The details: The facility is projected to generate USD 10 mn in export revenues in its first year of operations, ramping up to USD 30 mn within five years. The project will create 200 jobs in its first phase, with headcount expected to grow to 500 as operations scale.

The holding company — currently owns 61.7% of RCX — is offering an initial price range of EGP 6.87 to EGP 7.50 per share, valuing the company at between EGP 1.41 bn and EGP 1.54 bn. Raya Holding sees its subsidiary as undervalued and believes that increasing its stake will support restructuring efforts and help unlock long-term value, CEO Ahmed Khalil told EnterpriseAM.

Market reax: Following the news, Raya CX’s share price rose 2.79% to EGP 7.08 by the end of trading today.

Look out for our conversation with Khalil in tomorrow’s edition of EnterpriseAM Egypt.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD-

Earthquake strikes off Russian coast: An 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck off Russia’s Eastern coast earlier today has triggered a Tsunami that has hit nations across the Pacific, including the US in Hawaii, California, Alaska, Oregon, and Washington.

The quake is tied for the sixth strongest ever recorded and the strongest since Japan’s megaquake in 2011. Tsunami warnings were promptly issued for over 10 countries including parts of Russia, Japan, Colombia, and the US, with mns of coastal residents ordered to evacuate and reach higher ground. No deaths or injuries have been reported, though images show extensive damage on the eastern coast of Russia.

The worst may have passed: The Philippines, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands have since cancelled their Tsunami advisory warnings, with Japan downgrading its warnings for most coastal areas. While waves are continuing to build alongside the US West Coast, Hawaiian officials have also downgraded warnings. Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and California — where waves reached a height of 1.1 meters — remain on alert. (CNN | BBC | NBC | Reuters | Guardian)

OpenAI’s ChatGPT Agent thinks it's not a robot

? “I am not a robot,” ChatGPT Agent checks, then proceeds to bypass a Captcha. A reddit user on Friday shared the absurd moment they witnessed OpenAI’s ChatGPT Agent pass the very security measures designed to stop it in its tracks. The pop-up we’ve all come to know well before clicking our way through most websites proved ineffective in the face of AI, putting into question the efficacy of bot-detection systems on the internet, according to ARS Technica.

Acting on behalf of its users, the ChatGPT Agent can perform multistep tasks and access the internet within a secure environment. The new OpenAI feature allows users to watch as the agent navigates the browser through a window in the ChatGPT interface. The user reporting the incident watched as the agent clicked on the “verify you are human” checkbox, while ironically stating that “this step is necessary to prove I’m not a bot” as part of its real-time action narration protocol.

The Cloudflare checkbox for anti-bot verification doesn’t just rely on a simple click, it employs a complex behavioural screening system that analyzes mouse movements, click timing, browser fingerprints, and IP reputation to test for correspondence to human behavior. What’s astonishing is that an actual bot was able to evade a Captcha altogether — an escalated security measure specifically made to tell bots and humans apart through obscure visuals indecipherable for a machine — which users are often met with when suspicious activity is detected.

AI vs Captcha is not new, however. Captchas have been around for quite some time, and have had their share of defeats to AI. More irony lies in the fact that ever since the reCaptcha project was acquired by Google in 2009, it helped train AI models for image recognition, ultimately contributing to AI now being able to bypass Captchas.

Are Captchas about to become a thing of the past? The incident gives us a glimpse into our future with AI, suggesting that its capabilities have surpassed simple scripted automation and are brushing up against human judgement. If AI can masquerade as human, how long will it be until bot-detection becomes obsolete? That, for now, remains uncertain.

Under the Lamplight

Elif Shafak’s Honour is a masterclass in storytelling

?When it comes to lyrical prose and airtight plots, you can always count on British-Turkish award-winning author Elif Shafak to deliver. In her 2011 novel, Honour, Shafak presents a 300-page work of fiction that tackles domestic abuse, male violence, and an honour killing that changed an entire family’s trajectory.

It’s a grim story, and Shafak lets you know from the get-go. The novel’s dedication makes it clear that this isn’t a light story, nor is it one that will come with a happy ending. Shafak prefaces the novel with a real-life anecdote briefly describing acts of marital violence she witnessed from a young age, writing: “In the evenings, we listened to the shouts, the cries, the swearing. In the morning, we went on with our lives as usual.” The dedication not only sets the tone for the chapters to come, but reveals a grim truth that remains hidden behind closed doors — even when the doors are made of glass.

The novel kicks off with Esmaa — a Turkish-Kurdish woman now residing in London — as she prepares to pick up her brother Iskender from prison, where he spent the past 14 years for murder — an honour killing, in particular. The victim? That remains unclear, yet the reader is soon given ample clues.

From this point onward, the novel covers several separate timelines across different locations. We’re let in on Pembe and Adem’s — the siblings’ parents — journey as immigrants in London and the consequences of the culture clashes experienced by their family — particularly Iskender. Running alongside the main narrative is another focused on Jamila, Pembe’s twin sister, who never left her small village near the Euphrates River. As the story progresses, Shafak offers a stark contrast between both cultures — where they intersect, and where they veer apart.

The breaking point. Honour does an incredible job at portraying the complexities of its characters; there are no good or evil labels planted atop each proverbial head, but rather a nuanced explanation of their motivations. The novel expertly tackles the struggles of immigrants, the far-reaching impact of archaic traditions long-passed down, and the fight for women’s freedom. Shafak does so in impeccable detail, with prose that evokes both pain and beauty. Honour may not be one of Shafak’s most popular titles, but it's certainly one of her most profound.
