WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Capsized drillship in Gulf of Suez leaves four dead and four missing

Good afternoon, friends, and congratulations on making it to the long weekend. The weather seems to be heating up as the news cycle cools down.

**A QUICK PROGRAMMING NOTE- EnterprisePM is taking a publication holiday tomorrow, and will be back in your inboxes on Sunday afternoon. Until then, enjoy the weekend.

THE BIG STORY TODAY-

Four crew members died and another 22 were injured after Adam Marine 12 drillship capsized in the Gulf of Suez last night, the Health Ministry confirmed in a statement. Rescue and search operations are ongoing as four crew members remain missing, Masrawy reports.

Meanwhile, navigation in the Suez Canal is proceeding normally in both directions, the Suez Canal Authority said in a statement.

Bonyan for Development and Trade is gearing up to launch its IPO on the EGX as soon as next week, Al Mal reports, citing a source with knowledge of the matter. The real estate investment firm is finalizing its offering prospectus, and the subscription window will open once regulatory approvals are secured — including that of the Financial Regulatory Authority — the source said.

The timing looks right. The decision to move forward with the listing comes amid signs of renewed market activity and fresh investor interest in Bonyan’s shares — a turnaround from the cautious mood seen recently due to regional tensions — the source said.

REFRESHER- The two-tranche offering will be open to both institutional (95%) and retail investors (5%). Mubasher pegged the fair value price at EGP 7.94 per share. While the 551.3 mn shares on offer — good for a 33% stake — are being sold by Bonyan’s sole shareholder Sky Realty Holding, a post-IPO capital hike will see the Compass subsidiary reinvest a portion of the IPO proceeds back into Bonyan.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

Hamas responds to US-backed ceasefire proposal: Hamas indicated today that it is open to a ceasefire agreement with Israel but maintained its core demand for a complete end to the war in Gaza, hours after US President Donald Trump said that Israel agreed to a US-backed proposal for a 60-day ceasefire. The Palestinian group is “ready and serious regarding reaching an agreement,” Hamas official Taher Al Nunu said, adding that it would “accept any initiative that clearly leads to the complete end to the war.” A Hamas delegation is expected to meet Egyptian and Qatari mediators in Cairo today to discuss the offer, which reportedly includes partial withdrawal from Gaza and increased humanitarian aid. Israel has not committed to ending the war as part of the agreement, saying the war could only stop if Hamas is disarmed and dismantled.

OVER IN THE US- the US House of Representatives is racing towards a vote today on Trump’s “ big, beautiful bill ” of sweeping tax and spending cuts, aiming to meet his 4 July deadline. The bill, which narrowly passed the Senate 51-50, faces united opposition from Democrats in addition to pushback from some Republicans over steep Medicaid cuts and a projected USD 3.3 tn increase in the deficit.

☀️ TOMORROW’S WEATHER- It’s going to be another hot day in Cairo tomorrow, with the mercury set to peak at 37°C before dropping to 23°C at night. The North Coast remains cool, with temperatures peaking at just 27°C before slightly dropping to 25°C at night, according to our favorite weather app.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Is Reddit finally giving into AI?

Embracing change. AI has caught us off guard — in the blink of an eye, it seems all we had taken for granted was seemingly changing overnight. Tech giants are fighting for first place, and everyone else is frantically following. Somewhere along the way, many lost sight of their visions for a chance to get a leg-up in the race, though not Reddit. Since its launch, the social media platform and online forum has time and again championed its human-first community. 20 years later, it seems Reddit is finally letting AI in — though on its own terms.

AI-generated human answers. In late 2024, Reddit began testing out a new AI feature called Reddit Answers — an AI-powered search tool that provides summaries to users’ queries. How is that different from other AI-powered search engines, such as Google’s AI Mode or Perplexity Search, you may ask? Well, they draw from real conversations had by real people, no hallucinations there.

Unlike most AI-powered search engines, Reddit will cite its sources. The AI summaries provided by Reddit Answers don’t assume you’ll take them for granted. Each provides links to its source posts, drawn from myriad posts and discussions on the platform — no SEO fluff. Given that these summaries are based on actual human experience, they actually prove useful. To ensure that always remains the case, Reddit is constantly on the hunt for AI generated posts and comments that might risk the platform’s integrity.

Reddit proves you can embrace change and still stick to your values — no sneaky terms and conditions edits, no overhauls, and no gimmicks. “Trust is an essential component of the way Reddit works,” Reddit CTO Chris Slowe told the Verge. Yet, the social media platform finds itself in grave danger. Reddit’s exponential growth is largely owed to the fact that traditional search engines prioritized the platform. With traditional search now giving way to AI, it could mean bad news for the orange app.

That said, Reddit is still a gold mine —and it's holding down its fort. For AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini, Reddit’s data is a coveted prize. With 108 mn daily users engaging in conversations across countless subreddits, it becomes clear why Reddit feels the need to protect itself.

Earlier in June, the website sued Anthropic, accusing the AI-giant behind Claude of unlawfully using its data to train its AI models, according to the New York Times. “We will not tolerate profit-seeking entities like Anthropic commercially exploiting Reddit content [...] without any respect for [Redditors’] privacy,” Reddit’s statement reads. It’s worth mentioning, however, that Reddit has struck deals with OpenAI and Google, allowing both giants to utilize public Reddit content, though under specific terms.

In the age of AI, reddit is still wagering on human connection. “There will always be a need, a desire for people to talk to people about stuff,” Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said on a podcast earlier in June. The 20-year old legacy website is not averse to change, nor AI, but it is certainly mindful of how it navigates uncharted territories. As entire industries face AI disruption, and many question their future, Reddit continues to champion people — and hopefully, inspire other entities to do the same.

A search for justice

?How did Egyptians interpret the relationship between medicine, law, and politics? In his latest work, In Quest of Justice, Egyptian historian and professor of modern Arab studies at Cambridge University, Khaled Fahmy, takes readers on a journey through time where power, law, medicine, and the day-to-day lives of 19th century Egyptians intersect.

What did justice look like back then? The book dissects the concept and application of justice — and Egyptians’ experiences with it — during the reign of Muhammed Ali and his successors. Yet, the book doesn’t just detail dry legal history, it dives deep into vivid and surprising details of the relationship between ordinary Egyptians, and a state moving towards modernization. It goes beyond traditional narratives to offer a story that begins from the bottom up — beginning with the everyday people impacted by law, politics, and medicine.

How does one even come across 19th century Egypt? Through analyzing court archives, police reports, and medical records, Fahmy is able to reconstruct the details of judicial life in 19th century Cairo. The author paints a picture of courtrooms, prison cells, and the kind of medicine through which Egyptians might have been found guilty. The book details strange cases that reveal the nature of this relationship and the changes it underwent, such as the man who feigned madness to escape imprisonment, undergoing a peculiar medical procedure straight out of a comedy special, and the initial introduction of forensic medicine — and Egyptians’ subsequent refusal of it.

Fahmy excels at capturing the tension between the state’s obsession with control, and its people’s unpredictable stubbornness. In one incident, authorities insisted on performing an autopsy to determine the cause of death, which sparked outrage as it was considered a violation of the sanctity of the dead. However, this rejection didn’t last, seeing as the public realized they could exploit autopsies to prove innocence, claim compensation, or expose abuse. Scientific evidence thus became a weapon in the hands of the marginalised.

The book isn’t just a study on 19th century Egypt, it poses pivotal questions that go beyond time and place. Who holds the right to define justice? How should it be practiced? Written in a manner that is both narratively engaging and research-heavy, Khaled Fahmy turns archival documents into a human drama, proving that every cry in the courtroom, every forged document, and every protest against injustice has had an impact on shaping our present.

WHERE TO FIND IT- You can find In Quest of Justice as an e-book on Amazon. The Arabic version is also available at Aseer Al Kotob, ShoroukBookstores, Diwan, and online on Nile Wa Furat.

Fiery face-offs in the quarter finals

⚽Your daily update on the Club World Cup: Juventus bids the tournament farewell, and Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund are the last clubs to qualify for the quarter finals.

The Merengues get going. The Spanish giants secured their spot in the quarter finals after defeating Juventus with a clean 1-0 victory. Real Madrid dominated the majority of the match, whereas Juventus appeared to struggle.

Borussia Dortmund was the last team to qualify for the final eight, after beating Monterrey 2-1.

Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund will face off in the quarter finals on Saturday, 5 July.

No matches today or tomorrow, but we’ve got a busy weekend ahead with four fiery clashes.

#1- Al Za’eem’s next adventure: Al Hilal will open the tournament’s quarter finals stage with a highly-anticipated match against Fluminese at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida. The match kicks off at 10pm on Friday. Al Hilal pulled off one of the biggest Club World Cup upsets ever by defeating Manchester City 4-3 after extra time, securing their spot in the quarter finals — and maintaining an undefeated record. Fluminese also qualified from the group stage undefeated, and proved they got what it takes to win by eliminating Inter Milan in the round of 16.

#2- Chelsea and Palmeiras will meet at the Lincoln Financial Field on Saturday at 4am. The Blues qualified in second place in Group D, later overcoming Benfica 4-1 in a thrilling match that went into extra time, and saw a nearly two-hour delay due to weather. Palmeiras, on the other hand, topped Group A, and secured their qualification with a tough 1-0 victory over Botafogo in a Brazilian clash that also went into extra time.

Victors of both matches will face off in the quarter finals on Tuesday, 8 June.

#3- Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz stadium will host the most anticipated quarter finals match: PSG vs. Bayern Munich. The whistle will blow on Saturday at 7pm. The Parisians kept up their strong performances in the Club World Cup with a decisive 4-0 victory over Inter Miami in the round of 16, while the Bavarians managed to overcome Flamengo 4-2.

#4- Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund face off once again, in a rematch of the 2024 Champions League final. The match will take place at the MetLife stadium in New York on Saturday at 11pm. Real Madrid topped its group and eliminated Juventus with a 1-0 victory yesterday. Borussia Dortmund was also in its group’s lead, and defeated Monterrey early this morning.

Victors of both matches will face off in the semi-finals on Wednesday, 9 June.
