WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

El Sisi heads to Moscow

Good afternoon, friends, and happy Thursday. We hope your workweek is winding down as calmly as the news cycle is today as we brace for a scorching weekend ahead.

BIG STORY TODAY-

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi is headed to Russia to attend the 9 May Victory Day parade following an invitation from Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to an Ittihadeya statement. The trip comes after El Sisi concluded his official visit to Athens, where a strategic partnership between Egypt and Greece was signed.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD-

The US and the UK are expected to announce a trade agreement to lower tariffs on some goods today, making Britain the first country to secure a deal with Washington since US President Donald Trump imposed his sweeping tariffs last month. Trump teased on his social media platform Truth Social that “a full and comprehensive” agreement with the UK is in the offing, adding that there are “many other deals, which are in serious stages of negotiation, to follow.” The agreement will be announced in a press conference at 10am from the Oval Office, he said in a separate post.

But UK officials expect the agreement to be more limited in scope, focusing on British steel and auto exports: The trade framework could see the US agreeing to decrease tariff quotas on British car and steel exports — which were slapped with a 25% levy from the US — a British official told Reuters. In exchange, Britain is expected to lower tariffs on US cars as well as a digital sales tax impacting major US tech companies. (Reuters | The New York Times | Financial Times)

☀️ TOMORROW’S WEATHER- The weather is nearing this week’s peak in the capital tomorrow, with temperatures set to hit a maximum of 38°C throughout the day before cooling to a still warmer-than-usual 23°C at night, according to our favorite weather app.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

The future of hiring is in the hands of AI

Robots hiring robots? Applicant tracking systems (ATS) — AI-powered software applications that facilitate and automate the recruitment process, namely the filtration of resumes — have been steadily rising in popularity and use since the early 2010s. Today, ATS systems are the rule rather than the exception, with a market size estimated to surpass USD 6.2 bn globally by 2031, according to a report by global research firm The Insight Partners cited by PR Newswire.

ATS isn’t the only AI involved in the hiring process. Advancements in AI have led to more automated recruitment processes seeing the light of day, including AI-led phone interviews and video interviews requiring jobseekers to record themselves answering pre-determined questions to be assessed by the AI, with no human influence from the hiring company.

Jobseekers today are counting on the absence of human input to “hack the system.” In a recently published opinion piece in the Financial Times, columnist Sarah O’Connor writes of the rising attempts by applicants to “bluff their way through online assessments,” by way of AI tools. Many jobseekers have begun utilising language processing models to generate on-the-spot answers that are deemed “ideal” by artificial intelligence to counter the automations in place, with video tutorials flooding social media. Some software developers have even created tools designed to alter facial expressions in real time to help applicants avoid looking like they’re reading from a script during these interviews.

Is this the new norm? According to HRD America, one in five US employees have used AI tools during job interviews. In a report published by Resume Builder in October 2024, the app notes that of 948 business leaders surveyed, over half already used AI in hiring, with seven out of 10 planning to implement the technology throughout 2025, bumping the total to 68%. In the process, the companies will be letting AI reject candidates without human oversight, despite potential bias.

Recruiters are mad that jobseekers are playing their game. Employers are overwhelmed by the number of AI-fueled applications, leading to more rejections, further fueling said applications in an “AI arms race,” the salmon-backed newspaper writes.

So, who’s really winning here? Live in-person technical assessments with human supervision may be on their way back, according to FT. Forbes, however, argues that this is just the beginning — that a world where talent is sourced, evaluated, and hired without humaninterference is imminent, and that human recruiters may find themselves on the other side of the door.

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT

A new medical drama’s foray into monopolized territory

? Does the thought of catching up on 21 seasons of Grey’s Anatomy make you want to scream? Netflix’s latest medical drama, Pulse, packs quite the punch with over just 10 bingeable episodes — but compared to the greats, does it hold up?

Incoming trauma. Following a class of residents navigating the highs, lows, and plateaus of the ER, Pulse doesn’t give you a moment to breathe before throwing you headfirst into a literal hurricane. The show — set in Miami — begins with our roster of saviors receiving notice that the city is about to get hit by a storm, but, surprisingly — or unsurprisingly, depending on your knowledge of medical dramas — that isn’t what they’re most concerned about.

Never [redacted] where you eat. When ER Chief Resident Xander Philips (Colin Woodell) is indefinitely suspended, the resident who reported him to HR, Danielle Simms (Willa Fitzgerald) gets his job. The residents seem skeptical of the whole situation, and politics knock on all proverbial (and literal) doors. As the episodes go on by, Xander and Danny’s relationship comes into play, with the show tracing their not-so-professional dynamic across several non-linear flashbacks. In the present day, our doctors face day-to-day uncertainty tending to their ER patients all whilst navigating a new, awkward hierarchy.

Pulse knows it’s not Grey’s Anatomy. Characters in the show say it themselves when mocking a new medical intern heavily influenced by the iconic medical drama. Pulse starts off strong and peaks early, but it’s not a wade through the waters to get through the season. The show is ideal if you’re looking for a casual medical drama where you won’t get hung up on any of the characters, and is a nice watch for those itching in between weekly Grey’s Anatomy doses every Friday.

WHERE TO WATCH IT - Pulse is streaming on Netflix, and you can watch the trailer on YouTube (runtime: 2:50).

Al Ahly chases Pyramids + a packed European league weekend

⚽ Al Ahly will be meeting Al Masry on the pitch of the Borg El Arab Stadium tonight at 8pm for the fifth round of the Egyptian Premier League championship round. The round will continue on Friday with two matches — Zamalek and Ceramica Cleopatra at the Arab Contractors Stadium at 5pm, and Pyramids and National Bank at the Cairo International Stadium at 8pm.

Only a few points separate the leading teams: Pyramids still leads the standings with 47 points despite falling to Farco earlier this week, and is pursued by Al Ahly, who has managed to reduce the gap to just one point, while Zamalek is currently placed in third with 40 points, and Al Masry in fourth with 35 points, with one game up their sleeve.

In the relegation group, Al Ittihad meets Ghazl El Mahalla at 9pm on Saturday.

The Europa League finalists will be decided by two fixtures kicking off at 10pm tonight.

The first match will see Manchester United and Athletic Bilbao shake hands at Old Trafford, which can be considered virtually decided in favor of the Red Devils, who pulled off a 3-0 victory in the first leg in Spain. United has previously reached the Europa League finals twice, hoisting the trophy in 2017, but narrowly missing it in 2021. Bilbao has also reached the finals twice — in 1977 and 2012 — but has never gotten their hands on the trophy.

The other match is taking place in Norway, where Tottenham will be visiting Bodø/Glimt as they seek to reassert their dominance after a 3-1 first leg victory. The Spurs lifted the first ever trophy of the tournament in 1972 when it was still the UEFA Cup, and have another title from 1984. The Norwegian champions, on the other hand, have never won the title nor previously reached the final.

The Conference League finalists will be decided through matches between Chelsea and the Swedish Djurgården, and Fiorentina against Real Betis, both starting at 10pm. The first legs ended with Chelsea and Betis coming out on top with 4-1 and 2-1 scores respectively.

Super Saturday: Matchday 36 of the English Premier League kicks off on Saturday, with all eyes on Southampton’s match against Manchester City at 5pm, which could end with the away team level in points with the second-placed Arsenal before the latter’s match against champions Liverpool on Sunday. City has 64 points compared to Arsenal’s 67, and the Gunners also have an advantage on goal difference.

Bournemouth will be meeting Aston Villa at 7:30pm on Saturday, which marks an important match for the visitors as they battle for a Champions League qualifying spot.

Also on Saturday, at 5pm:

  • Fulham vs. Everton
  • Ipswich Town vs. Brentford
  • Wolverhampton vs. Brighton

Major European league matches we’ll be following this weekend:

  • Milan vs. Bologna — Serie A (Friday, 9:45pm)
  • Lazio vs. Juventus — Serie A (Saturday, 7pm)
  • Bayern Munich vs. Mönchengladbach — Bundesliga (Saturday, 7:30pm)
  • Atlético Madrid vs. Real Sociedad — La Liga (Saturday, 10pm)
  • Montpellier vs. Paris Saint-Germain — Ligue 1 (Saturday, 10pm)

Last chance for the Young Pharaohs: Our homegrown team faces Tanzania in the final round of the group stage at the U-20 African Cup of Nations at 9pm on Friday. The Young Pharaohs are in fourth place with 4 points gathered from three matches, and need nothing less than a victory to qualify for the quarterfinals.
