WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Israel-Egypt gas pipeline gets USD 610 mn greenlight after years of delays

Good afternoon, friends. The week is drawing to a close, but it seems that the news cycle isn’t as ready as we are to wind down.

THE BIG STORY TODAY-

Long-stalled Nitzana pipeline to finally begin construction? Chevron and its Israeli Leviathan partners NewMed Energy and Ratio Energies have inked a USD 610 mn agreement with pipeline operator Israel Natural Gas Lines to build the long-awaited Nitzana pipeline connecting Israel and Egypt, the Times of Israel reports, citing several company officials. The 600 mn cubic feet a day (mcf/d) pipeline stretching 65 km between Israel’s southern gas network and Egypt’s gas network in eastern Sinai will bring Israel’s export capacity to Egypt to 2.2 bcf/d when construction is complete in 2028.

The project has been plagued by delays due to volume allocation and cost burden disagreements between Chevron's partners and Israel’s Natural Gas Authority, with the launch of the pipeline initially planned for this year. The delay will cap Israeli gas exports to Egypt at 1.6 bcf/d from 2H 2026, limiting Egypt's ability to secure a more affordable alternative to costly LNG shipments amid rising domestic demand and declining production.

The news follows a USD 35 bn natural gas export agreement between the two countries last month, which will see 130 bn cubic metres of gas exported to Egypt from 2026 through 2040 under an amendment to an existing 2019 gas export agreement. Flows will first increase from 4.5 bn cubic metres in 2025 to 6.5 bn cubic metres as early as 2026 under the first 20 bn cubic meter phase of the agreement.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD-

It’s another busy day in the global press, with all eyes on the region after Israeli forces once again intensified their ground offensive in Gaza City yesterday. Thousands of Palestinians are fleeing the city amid surging bombardment and relentless airstrikes, as an already alarming humanitarian crisis continues to worsen. Residents may flee through a temporary route along the central Salah El Din road “for only 48 hours,” Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee said.

MEANWHILE- The Cyberspace Administration of China — the country’s internet regulator — has ordered the state’s top technology firms to cancel all purchases of all artificial intelligence chips from US tech company Nvidia in a bid to cut down on US reliance, the Financial Times reports. The news follows a ruling earlier this week which saw the East Asian state accuse Nvidia of violating the country’s anti-trust laws, following a “preliminary probe” into its business practices. The move marks the latest escalation in the trade war between China and the US despite industry negotiations in Madrid.

☀️ TOMORROW’S WEATHER- We’re in for a warm day in Cairo, with temperatures peaking at 34°C before cooling down to 22°C, according to our favorite weather app.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Remote work makes you happier

?‍? Logging in from home isn’t just comfortable, it actually improves your wellbeing. Recent research from the University of South Australia found that remote work significantly boosts worker happiness. According to Fortune, striking the right balance between office and home work environments allows for both better health and better productivity. While the latest return-to-office mandates were rationalized as a performance-led decision, all employees really need for a productivity boost is a few days working from home.

The pros of working from home? Plenty. Eliminating the daily commute saves both time and money while reducing the stress of maintaining a polished office appearance. The study found that remote workers gain an extra 30 minutes of sleep nightly — not just borrowed from office travel, but also thanks to reduced commuting stress and workplace tensions.

With hours freed up in their day, workers invest more in personal wellness through gym sessions, long walks, or creative hobbies. Rather than grabbing their meals on the go or shelling out on food delivery, working from home encourages healthier and more affordable eating habits. The research shows remote workers consume significantly more fruits and vegetables. Personal relationships also see improvements, with more chances to spend time with family and friends.

What about the trade-offs? Many CEOs assumed that in-person collaboration would drive better innovation and productivity. However, the study actually shows that 43% of time reclaimed from commuting allows remote workers to complete more tasks, with additional research indicating 35-40% productivity gains and fewer errors. While this evidence makes a great case for hybrid work models, employers still struggle to optimize — or maybe accept — this new work arrangement that may offer a meaningful step toward prioritizing employee wellbeing in the modern workplace.

Under the Lamplight

A Mouth Full of Salt: Bitterness that lasts

? Anchored in the deep currents of the Nile, Sudanese author Reem Gaafar’s A Mouth Full of Salt portrays the circular nature of life in Sudan, with tragedies rippling across decades. Set against the backdrop of military rule in the 1980s and an unfolding civil war, the novel tells the story of a northern village through the voices of its women. The debut novel earned Gaafar the 2023 Island Prize for African Literature, capturing tangled tales of vengeance, destructive traditions, and familial weight.

A ruthless river: Gaafar launches us into a search for a young boy’s body, presumed drowned in the Nile. Such tragedies are not uncommon in the village, its locals having long learned to live with the river’s insatiable tides. Through the eyes of Fatima, a young girl whose older brother met a similar fate years ago, we see communal life take center stage. The men and boys dedicate their time and energy to the search party, while the women and girls make sure everyone is well-fed and cared for.

Fatima is an outwardly obedient daughter whose inner thoughts reveal a quiet resistance to the outlooks and constraints her society imposes, especially on women and young girls. She patiently awaits her school report, holding onto ambitions that exist beyond the limits of her small village. Sulafa, the lost boy’s mother, offers a portrayal of an oppressed woman married to a negligent and violent husband who takes a second wife after her struggles with pregnancy.

Jarring encounters with fate and echoes of the past. When the village is struck with a string of tragedies — sudden deaths, a livestock plague, and wildfires — rumors of witchcraft start circulating, with sightings of an old woman from up in the hills, said to curse whomever she comes in contact with. Halfway through, the story takes us 40 years into the past to meet a South Sudanese woman by the name of Nyamakeem, the alleged witch in the village. Her narrative draws the cyclical nature of resentful beliefs and oppressive traditions.

Gaafar paints an unembellished picture of the female experience in Sudanese village life, highlighting generational strains still felt today — yet her characters display a streak of agency that starkly contrasts with the norms of their time.

WHERE TO FIND IT- You can find A Mouth Full of Salt at Diwan or as an eBook on Amazon and Kobo.
