WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Qalaa Holdings inaugurates two factories with investments of EGP 427 mn

Good afternoon folks, and happy Monday. We have another busy issue for you today — let’s get into it.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

Qalaa Holdings opens new herb drying facility with EGP 400 mn in investments: EGX-listed Qalaa Holdings has inaugurated a new herb drying facility for its subsidiary Dina Farms, marking the completion of the EGP 400 mn first phase of the project, according to a press release viewed by EnterpriseAM. The factory has reportedly received all international certifications to begin production for export.

The company also added an EGP 27 mn glass wool pipe factory: Qalaa also announced the inauguration of a new EGP 27 mn glass wool pipe insulation production line at Glass Rock Insulation, a subsidiary of Qalaa’s ASEC Holding.

Both factories stand to boost the company’s FX revenues: “We expect export revenues from insulation products and the new herb drying facility to reach around USD 40 mn,” Qalaa Holdings founder and chairman Ahmed Heikal noted, adding that the company’s export revenues had reached USD 47.7 mn in the first nine months of 2024.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

Today’s int’l headlines are being dominated by news of the German right’s anticipated victory in the country’s parliamentary elections. Germany’s center-right Christian Democrats (CDU/CSU) bloc have garnered the highest portion of votes at 28.5%, leaving the center-right coalition in need of just one other party to secure a parliamentary majority. Negotiations could see the center-right coalition partner with either the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) — who came in second in the vote with its best-ever showing of 20.8% — or the center-left SPD, which garnered 16.4% of the vote. The election comes after the incumbent center-left alliance headed by the SPD’s Olaf Scholz collapsed in December amid budget disputes and two years of economic contraction.

The CDU/CSU’s victory comes as Europe scrambles to protect its interests amid an increasingly tense relationship with the US. The center-right coalition’s leader, Friedrich Merz, has said that he plans to “unite Europe” and “achieve independence from the US,” noting that he believes that US president Donald Trump and his administration are “largely indifferent” to Europe’s fate. FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Older workers are putting their foot down on age discrimination

Age discrimination is getting pricey — and employers are learning the hard way. Amid skyrocketing payouts for ageism cases, companies that think they can quietly shuffle their older staff out of the office might want to think again. It turns out that with experience can come a bigger-than-expected price tag, the Financial Times writes.

Ageism is burning a hole in employers’ pockets. The average compensation awarded in successful UK age discrimination cases shot up a staggering 624% in 2022-23 — up to GBP 103k, compared to just GBP 14k the year before, UK employment law firm Fox & Partners note. Why? Because more and more high-level execs are taking their employers to task for trying to push them aside in favor of younger hires.

This isn’t just a one-off issue. With a quarter of the OECD population expected to be over 65by 2050, older workers aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. But many companies are still trying to reduce the number of older workers, who often pull larger salaries and have accumulated enough clout to influence firms’ directions. A growing number of senior employees are coming forward, arguing that so-called “redundancy” plans are simply thinly veiled excuses to replace them with someone younger and cheaper.

The legal landscape here is tricky. Unlike other protected characteristics, age discrimination laws allow for some measures to encourage pushing out older workers — particularly if an employer can prove that a retirement policy serves a “legitimate social aim,” aka making room for younger workers. Still, many older professionals argue that being pushed out at their age effectively ends their careers, making it nearly impossible to find a comparable role elsewhere.

The real cost of ageism is more than just lawsuits. Most age discrimination cases don’t even make it to tribunal — many are settled early, and often quietly. So while the rising payouts might grab attention, they only scratch the surface of a much bigger problem. “Only a tiny minority have the resources to pursue legal action, and even fewer succeed,” Emily Andrews, deputy director for work at the UK’s Centre for Ageing Better.

Age discrimination isn’t just an ethical problem, it’s a business blunder. Companies that actually value and retain their older employees get major perks: lower absenteeism, higher loyalty, and a gold mine of experience. They also get to reap the benefits of multigenerational workplaces, which Andrews notes often make for the most effective teams. Plus, in an era where AI is advancing quickly, human skills like emotional intelligence — something that older workers have in droves — are fundamentally irreplaceable.

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT

Forbidden love from either side of the gorge

📺 A blend between sci-fi, action, thriller, and romance. The Gorge follows rival snipers stationed on opposite sides of a mysterious chasm. Directed by Scott Derrickson, the film is quite the genre mashup, featuring themes of forbidden love, covert operations, and supernatural horror.

The plot: Levi (Miles Teller) and Drasa (Anya Taylor-Joy) are both elite snipers assigned on opposite sides of a remote, heavily secured gorge — a secret job that not even the president is aware of. The orders are simple: maintain the posts, ensure nothing escapes, and most importantly, do not communicate with the other side. But as we all know, isolation breeds curiosity, and soon enough, Levi and Drasa start exchanging messages. As their connection intensifies, so does the threat lurking below — forcing the pair to fight for survival.

Both actors bring effortless charisma to their role. Taylor-Joy in particular offers an incredible performance — balancing toughness with a sly sense of humor. The sequence of events is intriguing and does not shy away from being too over-the-top, making it a fun watch.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can watch the movie on Apple TV+ or catch the trailer on YouTube (runtime: 3:05).

EAT THIS TONIGHT

Care for some crispy chicken?

🍗 Indulge in some fried chicken at Joe’s Hot Chicken where there’s spice, crunch, and flavor in every bite.

Joe’s offers tenders and sandwiches — with four meal options that combine the two. We opted for Joe’s #3, which includes one tender and one sandwich. These were served with dry slaw, pickles, and Joe’s special sauce. The chicken — both the tender and the one in the sandwich — was irresistibly crunchy and well-spiced, accompanied by fresh vegetables. The sauce was tangy and somewhat sweet, making it the perfect addition to the meal.

Pick your heat. While ordering, you’re asked to choose between six spice levels. We opted for the third from the bottom, mild. This one gave a kick of spice without overpowering the flavors. More intense options include “extra hot” and “reaper” for those who enjoy burning their tongues off.

Can I get a side with that? We went for a side of mac and cheese and it was deliciously creamy and cooked to perfection.

WHERE TO FIND- You can find Joe’s Hot Chicken at V Square Mall, New Cairo and delivery is available for New Cairo residents through Talabat or the number in their Instagram bio.
