WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Japanese medical manufacturer to set up shop in Ain Sokhna

Good afternoon, folks, and welcome to the end of yet another short workweek. We hope you all stay safe indoors as we are still waiting for the sandstorm to arrive.

ICYMI- Both the private and public sectors have tomorrow off for Labor Day. EnterprisePM Egypt will also be taking a break from your inboxes tomorrow, but we will be back in your inboxes at the appointed hour on Sunday.

THE BIG STORY TODAY-

A EGP 1.4 bn factory for blood collection bags is in the works: Japanese medical device and pharma company JMS, its local agent Interpharm, and the Egyptian Company for Medical Investments will set up a EGP 1.4 bn factory for blood collection bags and tubes in Ain Sokhna’s industrial zone, according to a cabinet statement. The factory aims to meet local demand for blood bags while exporting to neighboring markets in the MENA region, with production targets of 7 mn blood bags by the seventh year — 3 mn for domestic use and 4 mn for export.

Locally produced MRI devices are also in the pipeline: Chinese firm XinGaoyi MedicalEquipment (XGY) and The Arab African Company for Medical Industries (AACMI) have inked a partnership agreement to establish a JV dubbed XinGaoYi Egypt International to locally manufacture medical equipment, according to a cabinet statement. The agreement represents the initial phase toward establishing a joint manufacturing facility for the production of MRI, X-ray, and CT scan equipment at the premises of the state-owned Arab Organization for Industrialization — AACMI’s parent company. The agreement will allow these devices to be produced locally for the first time, according to the statement.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

The foreign press is still focused on Trump's 100 days in office: During a rally in Michigan to mark his 100th day in office, US President Donald Trump hinted that an agreement with China on tariffs is likely to materialize. “We get along with China,” he said. “I think it's gonna work out. They want to make a deal. We're going to make a deal. It's going to be a fair deal,” he added, marking another instance of a softened tone on Beijing. Trump also renewed attacks on Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell after dialing down his criticisms of the pace of his rate cuts last week. “Inflation is basically down and interest rates came down despite the fact that I have a Fed person who’s not really doing a good job,” he said. “I know much more than he does about interest rates.” In addition to touting the success of his tariff policy, Trump hailed his time in office as the “most successful 100 days of any administration in the history of our country.”

☀️ TOMORROW’S WEATHER- Sunny skies tomorrow will make up for today’s weather, with the mercury set to reach 28°C throughout the day, and dip to 17°C in the evening, according to our favorite weather app.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

The Duolingo owl is becoming less human

Is everyone’s favorite social media savvy green bird at risk of redundancy? Luis von Ahn, CEO of popular language learning app Duolingo, announced a shift to an AI-first business model by email which has since been made public by the company, detailing plans to “[replace] a slow, manual content creation process with one powered by AI.”

Pack it up, freelancers. As part of this change, Duolingo will be eschewing freelancers and contract workers for positions in which AI tools and automations prove more efficient. Von Ahn’s email noted that amongst existing criteria and performance metrics, use of AI will be greatly taken into account when hiring new talent, and evaluating existing employees’ performance. “All of this said, Duolingo will remain a company that cares deeply about its employees,” von Ahn ended his email — but the statement was not met with enthusiasm by the LinkedIn community.

Is it time to let the subscription go? For many-a-commentor on the original LinkedIn post, the shift all but confirmed a rising concern held by mns of employees. Several professionals in the tech industry were quick to call out the popular language learning app in the post’s comments section, citing “poor leadership,” “signs of a clearly declining Duolingo organization,” and “a rather strange move worthy of a Black Mirror episode by a company whose primary product is to facilitate human communication.” But Duolingo isn’t the only company shifting their hiring model.

If you jump, I jump. Earlier this April, Canadian e-commerce company Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke sent out a memo detailing the company’s new approach to hiring talent, mentioning that teams will be required to prove inability to facilitate certain processes through AI before requesting additional human resources, as reported by CNBC. The memo sent out by Lütke also called attention to the rise of a “fundamental expectation” across Shopify teams to embrace AI in daily tasks — but won’t quality take a hit?

Low quality is a price Duolingo CEO von Ahn is willing to pay. Time is money, and AI offers more for less… but that is not always a good thing. “We’d rather move with urgency and take occasional small hits on quality than move slowly and miss the moment,” von Ahn wrote in his email. Is that a sustainable framework? It seems only time will tell.

Let’s look at the bigger picture. In a recently published report by Microsoft, the tech leader believes that AI agents — software systems designed to mimic human behaviour, albeit more “efficiently” — are likely to replace human talent working across services, namely customer service, marketing, communications, and product development. This leaves mns of workers in a precarious position: either embrace AI or risk redundancy, says TheStreet.

Resist or embrace? To justify this shift, Duolingo compared the rise of AI agents in the workforce to the rise of mobile-first services in the early 2010s. Noting their focus on creating content primarily for mobile at a time when most companies prioritised desktop websites — a shift that then earned them the 2013 iPhone App of the Year Award. If track record is anything to go by, it seems Duolingo might be taking a step in the right direction for their company, though many may find themselves hesitant to accept it on a humanitarian level.

Under the Lamplight

What is there to live for in a dying world?

? What becomes of us when the earth starts dying? In Wild Dark Shore, Australian NYT best-selling author Charlotte McConaghy dissects the lives of five characters as they navigate a world teetering on the edge of oblivion. When Rowan washes up the coast of Shearwater Island, she is rescued by one of its four inhabitants — a girl called Fen. Fen, alongside her brothers and father, Dominic Salt, nurse Rowan back to life, yet they do so with unease…

The skeletons don’t stay in the closet. As Rowan begins to regain consciousness, the reader quickly finds out that wildlife is near-eradicated, and climate change has taken its toll on the planet. As it turns out, Shearwater Island is home to one of the world’s last remaining seed vaults, and that too, is at risk.

How do you even wash up on an island off the coast of Antarctica? When your husband who is stationed there ghosts you, you simply have to lace up your boots and get going. Rowan goes to great lengths to find out what happened to her husband, who, until recently, lived alongside the Salt family before mysteriously “leaving.”

Wild Dark Shores isn’t about its characters. While the character arcs do a great job keeping you hooked, McConaghy’s work invites you to think of the bigger picture. What becomes of our dreams in a world threatened with extinction? What does a morning without the calling of birds sound like?

This isn’t McConaghy’s first apocalyptic rodeo. In her two novels preceding Wild Dark Shore, Migrations, and Once There Were Wolves, McConaghy writes of a world in which our environmental nightmares are reality. Introspective and painfully honest, the novel does not shy away from all things melancholy.

WHERE TO FIND IT- Wild Dark Shore is available as an ebook on Amazon.
