WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Valu inches towards an EGX debut

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the homestretch. With Eid just within reach, we’re following news of pending EGX listings, EV battery breakthroughs, and conversations around the proverbial water cooler about this Ramadan’s frontrunning drama series.

THE BIG STORY TODAY-

Valu is one step closer to its EGX debut: EFG Holding’s board of directors has approved a decision to list fintech subsidiary U Consumer Finance, better known by its brand name Valu, on the EGX, according to a company statement (pdf).

EFG Holding will restructure its ownership in Valu ahead of the listing: The board has also approved a restructuring plan that will give EFG Holding a 20.5% direct stake in Valu — which it indirectly owns through EFG Finance. To carry out the plan, EFG Holding will distribute Valu shares equivalent to the target stake to its shareholders in lieu of cash dividends for 2024 earnings. The plan will be pending the General Assembly’s approval and has received the Financial Regulatory Authority’s preliminary approval, according to a statement (pdf) by the authority.

The transaction values Valu at EGP 15.6 bn, based on the independent financial assessment (IFA) of BDO Keys Financial Consulting. Upon completion, EFG Holding will directly own a c.20.5% stake in Valu, while retaining its 67% indirect ownership in the company through other subsidiaries.

Not your regular IPO: The partial distribution of Valu shares to EFG Holding’s shareholders will facilitate Valu’s planned listing on the EGX. Once the shareholders receive their dividends in the form of Valu shares — which will be immediately listed on the EGX — they can either retain ownership in Valu or sell on the open market.

REMEMBER- We first got word of Valu’s plan to list on the EGX in March of last year, when CEO Walid Hassouna announced that the company would offer up to 25% of its shares on the EGX within a year.

^^ We’ll have more on the story in tomorrow’s edition of EnterpriseAM Egypt.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD-

Turkey detained Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu — President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s most prominent rival and leading opposition party figure — on charges of terrorism and organized crime. The arrest is the latest in a series of legal crackdowns on opposition figures across the country. The 54-year-old mayor was expected to be elected as the Republican People's Party's official presidential candidate within days.

Turkish markets recoiled: The TRY fell 12% to an all-time low of 42 against the USD before paring some of the losses, while the BIST 100 stock index, the country’s benchmark index, dropped by as much as 7%.

ALSO- A US federal judge ruled that the shutdown of USAID led by b’naire Elon Musk is unconstitutional, blocking him from taking further steps to dismantle the agency. The decision forces Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency to restore access to USAID systems — including email, payment, and security notifications — for all USAID employees. The ruling came in response to a lawsuit by the organization’s employees arguing that Musk illegally took control of the agency without Senate approval.

** CATCH UP QUICK on the top stories from today’s EnterpriseAM:

  • The gov’t is working on amending the VAT Law: The Finance Ministry is moving to reduce tax exemptions under the Value Added Tax (VAT) Law, with the government looking to review goods currently exempt from the law and limit goods subject to special tax treatments, either higher than the standard VAT rate — such as telecommunications and cars — or lower at 5%.
  • Fuel bills could go up again next month: The government is expected to raise fuel prices in April as it works to phase out fuel subsidies.
  • Investment Minister Hassan El Khatib continues to drum up investments during his time in New Delhi: Indian energy transmission and cable manufacturing company Sterlite Power is mulling a USD 5-6 bn electricity grid specifically for green hydrogen projects.

☀️ TOMORROW’S WEATHER- The downward trend is still on a roll, with temperatures dropping again in the capital tomorrow, with the mercury set to reach 20°C in the morning and 13°C at night, according to our favorite weather app.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

You can charge your EV in five minutes now… well, China can

The race to faster charging just got serious. Long charging times have been the bane of EVs' existence for a long time now. And while some have embraced the 30-minute wait, the broader market still sees EV charging as a deterrent, especially compared to the quick pit stops to fuel up internal combustion engine (ICE) cars. But that barrier might not hold much longer, at least in China.

BYD has revealed that their new battery is capable of adding 440km of range in under six minutes of charging, Arstechnica reports, thanks to 1k kilowatt (kW) chargers. To put things in perspective, the most powerful Tesla Superchargers max out at 250kW, and even Electrify America’s latest fast chargers top out at 350kW. The fastest charging tech used in professional motorsports, such as Formula E, reaches only 600 kW. BYD’s latest ‘super e-platform’ is pushing the boundaries with a megawatt class charging system.

How does this work? Charging at 10C means the battery can be charged in one tenth of an hour without degradation — something previously unheard of in passenger EVs. The key lies in advanced thermal management, high performance electrolytes, and improved anode materials, allowing for rapid energy transfer without overheating.

The catch? It’s exclusive to the automaker’s home country. For now, BYD is only launching this technology in China, alongside their upcoming Han L sedan and Tang L SUV. The company also plans to release 4k megawatt class chargers across the country.

What about other markets? While BYD sells EVs globally, its footprint in the US remains limited to batteries and electric buses — which won’t be changing anytime soon, especially since lawmakers in both camps have been pushing to block Chinese EV makers from entering the US on national security and economic grounds. Which means US consumers may have to wait for domestic or European automakers to license or replicate the tech.

The bigger picture: BYD might want to rethink their rollout tactic as new players improve on their own charging speeds. Tesla has been teasing a next gen Supercharger V4 that will reach 500kW. Nissan is joining Ford, BMW, and Honda in developing ChargeScape, to improve EV charging, integrate smart grid tech, and enable vehicle to grid (V2G) charging to cut costs and boost grid stability.

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT

Lending a voice to the voiceless

? Since the release of Lam Shamsiyya’s teaser trailer before the start of Ramadan, the show has captured the audience’s attention, especially among those who were already fans of the work of director Karim El Shennawy and the Sard Workshop. After just three episodes, Lam Shamsiyya has not only become the subject of conversation on many an iftar table, but also received widespread acclaim, making it the undisputed star of this year’s Ramadan drama season.

The setup: Nelly (Amina Khalil) lives with her husband Tarek (Ahmed El Saadany), and his young son Youssef (child actor Ali) from a previous marriage, and their son Yassin. It is clear early on that Nelly is a hardworking mother who is extremely dedicated to the happiness and comfort of her family. She pays special attention to Youssef, who is shown to be irritable, have rapid mood swings, and prone to introversion and isolation. Wesam (Mohamed Shahin), is not only Tarek’s oldest friend — one could mistake them for brothers —, but also a professor of Arabic, who offers to tutor Youssef.

A parent’s worst nightmare: The tragedy occurs the day of Youssef’s ninth birthday party, which was organized by Nelly and held in their home. Wesam volunteers to help Youssef change his clothes, and Nelly — not anticipating anything suspicious — walks into the room only to find him sexually harassing her step-son. Events escalate, and Tarek and Wesam get into a physical altercation that leaves the latter in a coma, after which events unfold in a framework of chaos and uncertainty.

The series tackles a thorny issue that is seldom discussed in Arab societies, as referenced by poet Mustafa Ibrahim’s words, which Wesam recites to Youssef: “The sun’s ‘lam’ is neglected — not everything that exists is acknowledged.” This offering from El Shennawy differs not only in its concept, but also in its presentation — it creates a state of tension, discomfort, and doubt that leaves viewers wondering whether what Nelly saw was real or a paranoid manifestation of every parent’s worst nightmare.

The series also skillfully and accurately addresses the psychological complexities of children that fall victim to harassment, crowned by the impressive performance of child actor Ali, signaling an exceptional talent in the making. Meanwhile, both Khalil and Shahin in particular — but also the whole cast in general — portrayed their characters with excellence.

DISCLAIMER- The series contains scenes that may not be suitable for some viewers, especially children and those who have previously experienced such crimes.

WHERE TO WATCH- Lam Shamsiyya is streaming on Shahid and Watchit, and the trailer is available on YouTube (runtime: 1:09).

Basbousa gets an upgrade

? Simonds is putting a new spin on a classic with their Crème Bôussa. This deep dish basbousa is a creamier and even richer version of the dessert we all know and love, served in a clay pot, which makes popping it in the oven to experience it in its most indulgent form easier than everyone resisting sugar this season would like it to be.

(Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links to external sources.)

This is a double-decker basbousa with a generous helping of cream in between. The typically moist and buttery dessert is amped up to 10, and the cream incorporated in the middle cuts what would be overwhelming sweetness with a milder and slightly tangy flavor.

It’s difficult to say no to a basbousa hot out of the oven with its crust crackling, making it a great pick if you want to limit dessert choices on the table without leaving the guests pining for something else. It may not be as revolutionary or as inventive as most desserts that debut during Ramdan, but it’s a familiar and satisfying offering just different enough to pique interest.

HOW TO ORDER IT- You can order the Crème Bôussa through Simonds’ website, with the option of picking it up from the nearest branch, or have it delivered straight to your home.
