WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Egypt’s economy grew 2.4% in FY 2023-24

Good afternoon, friends, and happy Thursday. It’s a wrap for a busy work week, and we’re ready to welcome the long weekend with open arms.

EnterpriseAM Egypt won’t be landing in your inbox on Sunday in observance of Armed Forces Day, along with other private and public sectors, as well as banks and the EGX, but we’ll be back at our customary time on Monday.

THE BIG STORIES TODAY

#1- Egypt’s GDP growth slows in FY 2023-24: GDP growth came in at 2.4% in 4Q 2023-24, bringing the GDP growth rate for the full fiscal year to 2.4%, Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation Minister Rania Al Mashat announced at a press conference earlier today. That’s compared to the 3.8% growth rate recorded during the previous fiscal year.

Driving the decline: The lower GDP growth rate came as geopolitical tension and volatility in the global economy put pressure on the Egyptian economy, particularly with “the government’s contractionary policies aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability — strengthening the governance of public investments being a key policy,” the ministry said. Suez Canal activity dropped 30% y-o-y in FY 2023-24, with a “sharp 68% contraction recorded in the last quarter alone,” the ministry said.

These drops were offset by growth in other sectors, including communications and information technology, tourism, wholesale and retail trade, transport and storage, and social services, including education and health.

#2- Business activity is back to contraction territory: Egypt’s non-oil private sector activity contracted in September, as higher cost inflation dampened sales and new orders during last month, the S&P Global’s Egypt Purchasing Managers (PMI) index shows (pdf). The September index reading came in at 48.4, down from 50.4 in August, which was the single month of expansion the country’s non-oil private sector had witnessed since November 2020.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

Picking up where we left off this morning, Israel’s escalating attacks on Lebanon continue to lead the front pages in the international press. The Israeli military issued evacuation notices for citizens in more than 20 towns in southern Lebanon, after launching a second attack on central Beirut overnight. The evacuation warnings, which “included the provincial capital Nabatieh, suggesting another Israeli operation designed to further weaken Hezbollah is imminent.” Meanwhile, Israel is still considering the extent of its retaliation against Iran after Tehran fired missiles into Tel Aviv on Tuesday — itself a retaliatory attack for Israel’s assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and several other attacks in Lebanon and Gaza. FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Meta’s smart glasses can doxx you on the spot

The safety of Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses has been called into question after two Harvard students revealed how easily they can be used to invade your privacy. Their program, called I-XRAY, showed that the smart glasses can pair with facial recognition tech to access people’s personal information on the spot, The Verge reports.

(Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links to external sources.)

How? Videos livestreamed through Meta’s glasses onto Instagram are fed through a program that uses AI to identify faces. The system then cross-references the images with public databases, and can be used to pull up personal information — addresses, phone numbers, emails, the whole shabang — and onto the user’s phone… All in a matter of seconds.

The facial recognition search engine used to uncover people’s identities is available to literally anyone. In 2022, The New York Times called the search engine, PimEyes, “alarmingly accurate,” made more concerning by its accessibility. And because Meta’s glasses are made to look just like any other pair of mundane Ray-Bans, people won’t be able to tell when they’re being recorded.

Meta has (unsuccessfully) tried to side-step privacy issues. Even though the company is urging users to respect others' privacy, the rules of wearable tech etiquette are only as effective as people’s willingness to follow them. And even with Meta adding a “privacy light” to signal when the user is recording, it’s practically invisible to the naked eye in broad daylight, says The Verge, making it practically useless. Although users can technically opt out of reverse face search databases, it’s impossible to completely remove your data from the internet.

? ON THE TUBE TONIGHT-
(all times CLT)

Take two, let’s go. In the second season of the Finding Ola — the third part to the titular character’s story from Aiza Atgawiz — Ola (Hend Sabry) is back with more hilarious situations and difficult challenges that she must overcome.

(Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links to external sources.)

The plot: Ola faces a problem with Second Chance — the brand that she manages — when the owner of her main supplying farm dies. She takes Montaser (Mahmoud El-Leithy) to meet the farm-owner’s son, Karim (Dhafer L'Abidine), who has just returned from France to sell the farm before heading back. Ola tries to save her brand by convincing Karim not to sell.

The series focuses on the challenges that divorced breadwinning women go through, as Ola struggles on her journey to balance between romance, her personal life, and spending time with her teenage daughter Nadia and her son Salim. We also see her struggle between modern and traditional parenting, trying to find common ground.

The show balances comedy and light drama, and has a pleasant surprise for fans of the old series with the appearance of Hazem (Tarek Al-Ibiari) — Ola's younger brother. The energy of the series is enjoyable from the decorations to the music, to even the title sequence, which includes behind the scenes bloopers from the cast. With only 6 episodes, Finding Ola is a great family-friendly binge for this long weekend.

? EARS TO THE GROUND-

Have you ever wondered where that person across the street is rushing to, or who that old man is bringing a bouquet of flowers for? It’s not everyday someone stops you to ask you Where Are You Going? But Catherine Carr is going to nip that curiosity in the bud. The podcast has an intriguing premise, opening the door to unexpected stories of everyday life with diverse narratives.

One episode — A Bath, a Cat and Billions of Dollars — shares a weirdly fascinating day: Carr stops a woman in Regents Park, London who shares her excitement about attending the National Cat Awards. She begins to tell Carr about her love for the felines and her role on the board of Cats Protection. Later on, a businessman discusses the complexities of investment and the “thrill” of helping secure funding for crucial infrastructure projects.

Short but sweet: Each episode does not exceed the 15 min mark, making it a fun and easy listen — and if you’re a curious cat this podcast will cater to it.

Global CEOs share their outlook on the future of the business landscape

As we enter a new decade defined by transformation ascribable to geopolitical volatility, technological disruption, and shifting employee value propositions, the KMPG 2024 CEO Outlook report turned to CEOs for insights on the future of leadership and a comprehensive snapshot of the business landscape.

The 1.3k CEOs — whose companies have revenues exceeding USD 500 mn — come from diverse regions and industries, including technology, finance, manufacturing, and healthcare, shared key trends they believe provide perspective on the evolving challenges to come.

The report showed a drop in confidence. Conducted between 25 July and 29 August of this year, the survey showed a significant shift in CEO’s confidence in the global economy in comparison to just a decade ago. In 2015, 93% of CEOs surveyed expressed optimism about the future of the business landscape, compared to this year, when only 72% felt the same — dropping a little over 2% y-o-y.

This decline reflects ongoing economic uncertainties, including inflation and geopolitical tensions. Nearly three-quarters of the polled CEOs now feel heightened pressure to secure sustainable growth for their organizations.

The biggest threats to growth: Supply chain disruptions and operational issues topped the list of most pressing threats to business growth over the next three years, surpassing concerns around cybersecurity and geopolitical instability. This highlights the evolving landscape of risks that CEOs must manage in their strategic planning.

64% of the CEOs indicated that they plan to invest in AI regardless of economic conditions. One of the most significant trends highlighted in the 2024 Outlook is the urgency surrounding the adoption of artificial intelligence, making it clear that leaders recognize its potential to enhance efficiency, innovation, and productivity. There are concerns about ethical implementation, as 61% of CEOs identified ethical challenges as a critical issue in AI adoption.

But only 38% of CEOs are confident that their workforce possesses the necessary skills to leverage AI effectively. This has caused upskilling teams and having them meet the demands of an increasingly digital landscape to become a key focus for leaders.

It looks like the end of workplace flexibility. 83% of CEOs anticipate a full return to office within three years, a notable increase from 64% in 2023. 84% of male CEOs share this view, in comparison to only 78% of female CEOs, indicating a potential gender-based difference in perspectives on remote work. Younger CEOs also seem less keen, with 75% of CEOs aged 40-49 feeling strongly about the return to office in comparison to 87% aged 60-69.

ESG has become a new challenge. 24% of CEOs identified the risk of failing to meet environmental, social, and governance (ESG) expectations as a significant concern. 68% indicated they would take a stance in political or social issues and align their businesses with broader societal values. ESG priorities have shifted from being secondary concerns to integral business strategy that informs the performance of the company.
