WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

THIS EVENING: Inflation hit a new record high in June

Good afternoon, friends, and welcome to another relatively brisk news day both at home and abroad.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

Record high inflation in June: Annual urban inflation accelerated to 35.7% y-o-y in June from 32.7% the month before, according to figures released today by state statistics agency Capmas. The June reading is a new record high, rising above the previous record set in July 2017, when it hit 33%.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

Prighozin’s reported meeting with Putin after his aborted-mutiny is making headlines in the international press. The head of the Wagner group and a group of its leaders allegedly met with the Russian leader on 29 June after the 24 June mutiny and before leaving for Belarus, according to the president’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, who informed reporters in a conference call today. The spokesperson explained that the parties discussed the Wanger group’s concerns and agreed to further operations. ALSO- UN warns of Sudan slipping into a full-scale civil war: The statement came as the fighting between the Sudanese warring parties escalated yesterday in Khartoum, Bloomberg reports, citing UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Eyewitnesses in the capital said that the clashing broke out early Sunday, where heavy weapons and military aircraft were spotted in the Kalaka neighborhood. Guterres warned that the continued fighting between the two military generals, Al Burhan and Hemedti, is bound to “destabilize the entire region.”

Rapper Travis Scott is dropping his new album at the Pyramids + Asset and wealth management firms are facing more consolidation than ever

Travis Scott is debuting his new album Utopia at the Giza Pyramids on 28 July, in a show that will be live streamed for fans around the world, the rapper said in a social media post yesterday. While the album has no official release date yet, it is available for preorder on Scott’s website, Hype Beast reported. Tickets for Scott’s show will be sold exclusively through Tickets Marché.

The new album comes years after the release of Astroworld, a name that has been tiedwith tragedy. Back in 2021, 10 people lost their lives and thousands were injured during a performance by Scott due to overcrowding and “compressive asphyxiation,” the BBC reported. Although a jury in Texas dropped the charges against the rapper two weeks ago, Scott still faces a number of civil suits raised against him in the aftermath of the show.

The power of power naps: Employees can tap into health and workplace benefits by taking short naps throughout the day, says theFinancial Times. During sleep, the brain re-opens neurological pathways which gives humans clearer memory, focus, and motivation to solve unfinished problems, says Sleep Better Georgia. Still need more convincing? Research shows that by taking a short nap, you could increase your productivity by as much as 34%.

Naps are also good for human health, in general. Regular napping stunts brain shrinking which reduces risks of dementia and brain-related diseases, according to Sleep Health. Sleep is proven to be a healthy refresher that positively regulates our moods, making employees feel and work better.

Asset and wealth management (AWM) firms are expected to see a consolidation or turnover rate by 2027 that is “twice the historical average,” with some 16% of these firms on track to close their doors or be acquired by larger organizations, a PwC poll of 500 asset managers and institutional investors has found. While challenges are considerable and “existential,” the report states, the industry has nonetheless been adaptable to changes like digital transformation and adjusting investor expectations.

Conditions for survival and success: The report lists a number of areas the industry needs to evolve in and develop order to improve its chances of surviving nearly unprecedented mutations. These include: Maneuvering through exceptional market turmoil including inflation and elevated interest rates; getting to understand new, younger customers; being open and receptive to new and groundbreaking technology; forming alliances — through M&A for instance — to overcome competition; and compliance with environmental, social and governance (ESG) expectations.

Cuphead is a watch for the young and not-so-young

📺 ON THE TUBE TONIGHT-
(all times CLT)

Parents, do you need a soother to pacify the little ones? Cuphead is a Netflix-developed slapstick cartoon that brings to life Studio MDHR’s video game Cuphead (albeit without the shooter action). The quirky kids’ show follows the misadventures of brothers Cuphead and Mugman as they wreak havoc throughout the Inkwell Isles, fighting villains as they go. Much like the video game, Cuphead is drawn in a style resembling a 1930s Walt Disney cartoon, which can make this show enjoyable for nostalgic parents. Overall, the campy characters, funny stories, and of course the fight scenes which rival Tom and Jerry, make for a fun and reliable watch for any child above seven. You can stream it now on Netflix.

The Egyptian Premier League’s 33rd gameweek continues today with the following matches, all kicking off at 8:30pm:

  • Ceramica Cleopatra v Pyramids
  • El Dakhlia v Al Ismaily
  • Tala’ea Al Gaish v Aswan
  • Ghazl El Mahalla v National Bank

🎾 Wimbledon enters the second day of Round of 16 matches: The oldest and arguably most prestigious Grand Slam tournament in the world of tennis is in its last few days as the men’s and women’s singles have their final Round of 16 matches today.

In the men’s singles: World no.3 Daniil Medvedev is currently on the court against Czech Jiri Lehecka, while Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas and the US’ Christopher Eubanks are set to begin their match any minute now. Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov and Denmark’s Holger Rune will play at 6:15pm, followed by world no.1 Carlos Alcaraz Garfia v Italy’s Matteo Berretini at 6:40pm. Also keep an eye out for world no.2 Novak Djokovic’s suspended match against Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz to continue today, after their match yesterday was put on pause due to Wimbledon’s 11pm curfew on gameplay.

In the women’s singles: Russia’s Mirra Andreeva is still battling it out against the US’ Madison Keys, with Andreeva earning the first set 6-3 before losing the second set 6-7, and the third set currently underway. Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova and Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka face off at 5pm, while Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur plays against Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic at 5:25pm.

🥖 EAT THIS TONIGHT-

Confirmed: Bikini bodies will never feel as good as Fornalia’s baked goodies taste. The bakery recently opened a new branch in Zamalek, bringing to the island the same artisanal goods it offers in Maadi, Nasr City, Mokattam, and New Cairo. The extensive menu features a seemingly endless selection of breads, croissants, breadsticks ranging from the sweet to the savory. Our personal favorites are the multigrain and rustic loaves as well as the brioche and cheese loaves. If you have more of a sweet tooth, you should opt for the stuffed cruffin — a croissant meets muffin hybrid — and the babka cannot be missed.

💡 UNDER THE LAMPLIGHT-

The lonely woman, unleashed: Canadian novelist Mona Awad’s Bunny is an unusual novel that will bring out your inquisitive side as you browse through the internet looking for answers and explanations. The story follows Samantha, a creative writing grad student who doesn’t have much in the world, and her relationship with her annoying classmates — aka “the bunnies” — who suddenly become much more after they invite her for a night with them. Her friendship with the bunnies helps liberate her as a writer and rids her of writer’s block, but at what cost? Highly-recommended by the iconic Margaret Atwood and described as “ [...] a novel that’s difficult to describe but easy to fall in love with,” by The Los Angeles Times in its review, we recommend this read that is wearing too many hats and wears them all very well.
