WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Egyptian-French consortium submits proposal to manage Egyptian airports

Good afternoon all you wonderful people, and welcome back to the workweek. Get ready for the latest on our privatization program, a new — and somewhat ominous — application of AI, and a whole new slate of Christmas-themed events as we kick off December.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

An alliance between Hassan Allam Holding and France’s Groupe Aéroports de Paris (ADP) has submitted a proposal for management and operation of Egypt’s airports in collaboration with the government, according to a cabinet statement. Civil Aviation Minister Sameh Elhefny expressed the government’s willingness to collaborate with the alliance as a part of the government’s airport privatization initiative, with Elhefny noting that the Aviation Ministry is “open to various forms of partnership with the French group,” which operates in 26 airports across 18 countries.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

Fifteen killed by Israeli strikes in Gaza as Hamas hostage video makes waves: Israel strikes killed at least 15 Palestinians in Gaza on Sunday, Reuters reports, as Hamas representatives meet in Cairo to conduct ceasefire talks with Egyptian officials. The talks follow Hamas’ release of a video Saturday showing an Israeli-American hostage pleading for US president-elect Donald Trump to secure his release.

Meanwhile, Russian and Syrian military forces continue to bomb targets in and around rebel-controlled Idlib following a sweeping attack over the weekend that saw a rebel alliance comprised of former Al Qaeda-affiliate Hayat Tahrir Al Sham — previously known as the Nusra Front — and fighters linked to the Kurdish separatist group the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) take over vast swathes of formerly regime-controlled Aleppo and the Syrian north.

** CATCH UP QUICK on the top stories from today’s EnterpriseAM:

  • It looks like El Khatib’s visit to Germany to talk investment wasn’t a wasted trip: Investment Minister Hassan El Khatib was in Germany over the weekend for the first ever Egypt–North Rhine-Westphalia Economic Summit and meetings with senior figures from the country’s private and public sectors, which saw a number of possible German projects in Egypt proposed.
  • Net foreign assets in the Egyptian banking system fell to USD 9.2 bn by the end of October, down from USD 10.31 bn in September, according to EnterpriseAM calculations based on Central Bank of Egypt figures.
  • All aboard the ro-ro line: The ro-ro shipping line connecting Damietta Port with Italy’s Port of Trieste kicked off operations on Thursday with its first shipment setting sail. The new line reduces the time to send goods between the two ports to two and a half days, down from a previous six.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Someday your journey will end, and Death Clock AI knows when

An AI-powered longevity app launched in July to help users answer one of life’s biggest mysteries: When will I die? Death Clock is trained on the data of over 53 mn people taken from 1.2k life expectancy studies, and uses your diet, exercise level, sleep habits, mental health, and involvement in your community to predict the length of your lifespan. Down to the date.

(Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links to external sources.)

Can the data be trusted? The AI operates based on valid statistics, and its tailored approach makes it a “pretty significant” upgrade from static mortality rate tables, Death Clock developer Brent Franson told Bloomberg. For example, the US mortality rate table predicts that an 85-year-old man has an average of 5.6 years to live with a 10% probability of dying within a year.

But life expectancy is not only based on financial and economic calculations — it also informs them. Financial standing and planning are major factors in determining life expectancy, but financial planner Ryan Zabrowski says that people’s financial behavior is affected by how long they expect to live. “A huge concern for [elderly people] is outliving their money,” said Zabrowski, which prompts them to take their age into account when deciding how much to save and how fast to withdraw assets. But averages taken from broad-brush mortality tables can be off by a wide margin, warns Franson. Enter Death Clock.

Since its launch in July, the app has been downloaded by 125k users, reports Bloomberg, citing market data firm Sensor Tower. After being handed a “fond farewell” card stamped with your death day from the Grim Reaper himself, Death Clock offers lifestyle plans and habit trackers with the aim of helping its users postpone their death date — for USD 40 a year. This means that the app ironically ranks quite high in the Health and Fitness category.

Illegal streaming websites that were allegedly part of the largest piracy network in the world have been taken down across 10 countries, according to The Independent, with 100 homes being raided by the authorities in what is being called Operation Takendown. The websites in question were taking part in copyright infringements by allowing users to illegally download or stream movies, TV shows, music, and video games.

The network had 22 mn users across Europe, granting them a hefty monthly revenue of EUR 250 mn per month. The operation managed to take down around 100 domains, seize EUR 1.65 mn in cryptocurrency, 29 computer servers, hundreds of IPTV devices, and arrest 11 offenders, with 102 suspects still under investigation.

This operation was the action following a two-year-long investigation with the help of the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol), which resulted in finding evidence of additional charges, including money laundering and cyber crimes. “The scale of these multi-jurisdictional law enforcement actions highlights the considerable challenge our industry faces when dealing with such sophisticated international pirate networks,” said Mark Mulready, co-president of AAPA.

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT

The dark truth behind Click to Buy

📺 A sharp, unsettling exposé on modern consumerism. Buy Now! The ShoppingConspiracy is a documentary that pulls back the curtain on the marketing techniques that lure us into cycles of spending and their ecological consequences. It’s a fitting subject for us to meditate on as we confront our excesses — and credit card bills — after Black Friday.

(Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links to external sources.)

Queue the whistleblowers. In the documentary we see former executives from large corporations like Amazon, Unilever, and Adidas provide insider information about the manipulative strategies that fuel overconsumption. For example, Maren Costa, an ex-Amazon designer, explained how the smallest details are scientifically engineered to maximize consumer engagement — including the color of the “click to buy” button. It seems like purchasing decisions aren’t as autonomous as we thought they were…

The environmental impact is highlighted. The documentary connects the dots between the corporate strategies and the environmental fallout they cause. We see the Ghanaian beach that’s become buried in discarded fast fashion and the cities that are now overwhelmed with junk — giving the viewer a sense of the urgency behind the film’s appeal.

WHERE TO WATCH: You can watch the documentary on Netflix or catch the trailer on YouTube (runtime: 2:15).

Nile League showdown + European league must-watches

⚽ The Ahlys duke it out: Al Ahly will be meeting Al Bank Al Ahly on the pitch for the fourth round of the Nile League later today at 5pm. The teams’ confrontation during the last season saw Al Bank come out on top with four goals to Al Ahly’s three, a fate The Reds hope to avoid, especially after losing two points in a draw against Al Ittihad during the last round, hindering their journey to defend their title.

Al Ahly sits at the top of the leaderboard, but uncomfortably so, with the same number of points as five other teams — Pyramids, Al Masry, Ceramica, Al Ittihad, and Al Gaish — who have all collected seven points. Al Bank Al Ahly currently only has one point to its name, and are hoping for a victory that will put more distance between them and last place.

The remaining matches for this round start at 8pm tonight:

  • Smouha vs. El Gouna
  • ENPPI vs. Ismaily

A Premier League highlight: Liverpool and Manchester City will be meeting in Anfield at 6pm as part of the 13th round of the English Premier League. The Scousers rule the roost with 31 points, while City struggles with three losses, leaving them in fourth place with 23 points in what people are calling their worst period under Pep Guardiola’s leadership.

Late to the party: These matches started at 3:30pm, and are still underway.

  • Chelsea vs. Aston Villa
  • Tottenham vs. Fulham
  • Manchester United vs. Everton

Real Madrid flirts with first place in La Liga. Los Blancos will be going head to head against Getafe at 5:15pm as part of the 15th week of the Spanish league. First place is closer than ever for Madrid after current champion Barcelona fell to Las Palmas yesterday. Los Blancos are currently in third place with 30 points, and hope that a victory tonight will help them close the gap with the Blaugrana’s 34. They also have a postponed match against Valencia under their sleeves, which could help boost their odds.

Keep an eye out for these matches in the major European leagues tonight:

  • Torino vs. Napoli — Serie A (4pm)
  • Heidenheim vs. Frankfurt — Bundesliga (6:30pm)
  • Fiorentina vs. Inter — Serie A (7pm)
  • Lecce vs. Juventus — Serie A (9:45pm)
  • Marseille vs. Monaco — Ligue 1 (9:45pm)

INSIDE INDUSTRY

Egypt ramps up industrial land offerings to spur local manufacturing

The industrial sector is expanding through new land offerings to boost local manufacturing: The Industry Ministry has launched a new phase of industrial land offerings today, available via the Egypt Digital Industrial Platform until 8 December. The initiative, which is being carried out in collaboration with the General Authority for Investment (GAFI), includes over 2.6k plots spanning 15.2 mn sqm across 37 industrial zones in 24 governorates, catering to diverse industries like logistics, automotive, renewable energy, food production, hospitality, and building materials. The government is aiming to deepen local manufacturing and enhance integration into global supply chains, as part of a broader effort to reduce import dependency, stimulate industrial growth, and increase the sector’s contribution to GDP from 14% to 20-30%.

(Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links to external sources.)

Big changes are taking place in land allocation: Investors can now reserve two plots — one primary and another as a backup — instead of one for the first time, expanding opportunities for establishing industrial projects. Previous applicants who met the financial and technical criteria in prior rounds but were unsuccessful will be given priority in this phase.

The digital platform has also simplified the process: The platform provides several services including allocating industrial land for investors through the investment map, receiving operational licenses, as well as an annual follow-up service. This streamlining eliminates the need for traditional paperwork, making the process faster and more transparent for both local and foreign investors.

Flexible acquisition models ease financial burdens: Lands are offered under ownership or usufruct arrangements at actual infrastructure costs, following directives from the prime minister to alleviate financial pressures on investors. Annual usufruct fees are set at 5% of the land ownership price, with payment terms designed to reduce upfront costs.

The government has introduced several incentives to reduce costs and simplify procedures for investors. Application fees have been halved to EGP 2.5k from EGP 5k, and deposit requirements lowered to 10% of the land value, with no need for bank guarantee letters. Additionally, investors can submit simplified project outlines instead of comprehensive feasibility studies, while financial proof requirements have been eased to cover 50% of the land value rather than 25% of total project costs. To streamline the process further, all applications can now be submitted electronically via the investment map platform.

Sector players are optimistic, but challenges remain: Manufacturers and business leaders are welcoming the increased availability of land and government support, which addresses a longstanding scarcity. The new land offerings come amid heightened demand for industrial plots, especially as the government focuses on localizing supply chains and integrating them into global networks.

However, financing and energy costs remain hurdles. Despite the land offerings’ positive impact, more robust financing tools are needed to address financing and energy costs, such as activating the 15% interest industrial financing initiative, establishing industrial funds, and empowering the Industrial Development Bank to directly finance projects like production lines and renewable energy solutions, member of the Federation of Egyptian Industries Mohamed El Bahy told EnterpriseAM.

Remember: Transport and Industry Minister Kamel El Wazir last month directed firms intending to establish large factories to build wind or solar power stations to fuel them, a move that comes as firms report extremely high electricity bills, including some in excess of EGP 100k in October. This situation has prompted many to look into establishing solar power stations to help reduce production costs and remain competitive in export markets.

Further support is also essential: Industrial land pricing needs to be reassessed to ensure affordability. Proposals include pricing land at infrastructure cost only, offering deferred payments, or introducing installment plans linked to project timelines. Expanding renewable energy projects is another key priority, aiming to reduce reliance on traditional energy sources and address the challenges of rising energy costs. Expanding the issuance of integrative decisions for the industry is crucial, alongside broader land offerings, mechanisms to provide clean energy, and increased industrial incentives that are not limited to specific sectors, member of the Businessmen’s Association Ahmed El Zayat told EnterpriseAM.
