WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

EFG Hermes launches a new USD 300 mn education fund in Saudi Arabia

Good afternoon folks, and happy Monday. The weather may be cooling down but the presses are just heating up for the week — and we’ve got all the details for you below.

THE BIG STORY TODAY-

EFG Hermes launches USD 300 mn Saudi Education Fund: Our friends at EFG Hermes are investing USD 300 mn to establish a K-12 operator in the Kingdom through their newly-launched Saudi Education Fund (SEF), according to a press release (pdf). The fund has acquired seven schools — four in the Kingdom and the rest in the UAE and Bahrain — from GFH Financial Group under the Britus Education brand. Together, the schools are equipped to serve up to 12k students, with 8k already enrolled. The new venture builds on the successes of EFG Hermes Egyptian K-12 operator Egypt Education Platform, with the firm set to “deliver exceptional educational services to our new student populations,” according to co-CEO Karim Moussa.

Beltone logs impressive growth in 9M 2024: Beltone Holding recorded EGP 1.1 bn in net income during 9M 2024, up from EGP 86 mn during the same period last year, according to its latest earnings release (pdf). Beltone’s revenues were also up 405% y-o-y during the nine-month period to record EGP 4.8 bn. “This solid financial and operational performance across all business lines is a direct result of the group’s swift and adaptable data-driven business model, its fully-fledged product offering, and its extraordinary talent,” Group CEO Dalia Khorshid said.

Palm Hills Developments (PHD) saw its bottom line rise 124% y-o-y to EGP 2.3 bn in 9M 2024, with revenues increasing 59% y-o-y to EGP 17.9 bn, the company said in a statement (pdf). The real estate company also saw sales grow 3.8x y-o-y to reach EGP 130 bn in the first nine months of the year. “We are pleased to report our best nine months results, fueled largely by strong sales in our North Coast developments. Albeit we applied a sales phasing strategy that led us receiving only 14% of demand in our Hacienda Heneish project,” Chairman Yasseen Mansour said.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD-

Moscow turns up the diplomatic heat as Biden takes the brakes off Ukraine: The Kremlin said this morning that an official US decision to allow Ukraine to carry out limited strikes on Russian territory using US-made long-range missiles would mean “a qualitatively new round of tension and a qualitatively new situation from the point of view of US involvement in this conflict,” according to comments from Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. He added that official confirmation of such a decision by the US would be interpreted as direct involvement by the US and NATO, saying that these moves show that the Biden administration “intends to take steps to continue adding fuel to the fire and continue to provoke tension around this conflict.” (Financial Times, Reuters)

PLUS- Trump taps Big Tech critic, Musk fan for FCC chair: President-elect Donald Trump has given noted Big Tech skeptic and SpaceX aficionado Brendan Carr the nod for chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), with many expecting Carr to use the position to crack down on what he has called mainstream media’s “censorship” of right-wing views. FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Anybody know Gedo’s first best friend’s name?

As more of our lives move online, digital estate plans have become essential, FastCompany writes. Imagine loved ones trying to crack their late grandpa’s email password or figure out the name of his first pet to unlock security questions; beyond the obvious difficulty of doing this during a period of grieving, being locked out of deceased family members’ accounts can have real material consequences.

A digital estate plan ensures that your family can access online accounts and assets when you’re no longer around to guide them. It’s as simple as a list of everything from social media accounts to online banking and crypto wallet credentials. This also should include liabilities like subscription services, retail accounts, and any secret dating profiles here or there — it’s too late for them to judge you anyways.

Password managers are the way to go. This way, your loved ones will only need one key to unlock the digital treasure chest. This, paired with a nice straightforward letter of what the platforms are, how they’re accessed, and what should be done with them make for the perfect digital estate plan. This document should be safe but accessible so that it’s ready when needed.

You may also want to think about saving some of your content for posterity. Monash University’s Dr Emily van der Nagel tells the Guardian that if there’s content on your socials that your loved one’s might like to keep, you should start downloading it and storing it yourself rather than rely on third-party services — which often refuse to allow others to access your accounts, even after death.

Some social media sites also allow you to designate “legacy contacts,” van der Nagel notes, with your digital executor able to decide whether to keep, deactivate, or in some cases memorialize your account after your death.

While this may be thinking far ahead, planning for the future will save loved ones the unnecessary headache of an inaccessible digital footprint, and will add the peace of mind of not having mysterious legacies floating around the internet. “There are steps you can take before it happens,” van der Nagel says. “You don’t want to have to deal with this suddenly and unexpectedly while you are grieving.”

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT

A relatable drama about the job market

📺 Six Months is all about that post-graduate fight for employment. This miniseries blends humor and heartache, showing the struggle young adults face trying to chase their dreams in a brutally competitive job market.

Burdened by debt and stuck in a grueling call-center job with an overbearing boss, Mourad (Noor El Nabawy) — a diligent, organized young man who’s struck with bad luck — is desperate for a break. On the flip side is Latifa (Nour Ehab), a privileged young woman whose graduation gift — a shiny new car — gets totaled within minutes. Determined to fix it in secret, she sets out to find a job.

Their paths cross at a real estate company offering a six-month sales internship, where the ambitious sales manager Kamal (Mourad Makram) pits them against each other. The stakes? Reach the sales target or lose the job.

Why watch it? You’re met with a cast of fresh faces which brings an authentic, lighthearted charm to their roles, delivering performances that feel genuine and engaging. The nuanced script breathes life into relatable office characters: The manipulative coworker, the introverted employee, the overworked hustler, and the office boy whose wit and charm keeps everyone smiling.

WHERE TO WATCH- The show is streaming now on WatchIt or you can sneak a peek of the trailer on YouTube (runtime: 1:41).

EAT THIS TONIGHT

Matter Brews has something for matcha and coffee lovers alike

Caffeinated delight. Matter Brews is a little truck perfect for those seeking unique beverages, with a menu that caters to both matcha enthusiasts and coffee aficionados.

As far as matcha goes, Matter Brews’ variety doesn’t fail to impress, with innovative options like strawberry matcha, white chocolate matcha, and the intriguing toasted cereal matcha. We opted for the coconut matcha, and it was an absolute delight. Made with coconut water, the drink had a light, refreshing quality that set it apart from heavier milk-based options. The subtle coconut aroma beautifully complemented the matcha.

Coffee drinkers, fear not — Matter Brews delivers on that front too. Their salted caramel iced blended latte was a revelation. Velvety and indulgent, the drink offered the perfect blend of sweetness and a touch of salt, with the coffee flavor shining through.

The bakery section is small but mighty, with the banana bread stealing the show. Moist, flavorful, and just the right amount of sweet, it’s a must-try. The peanut butter loaf cake is another standout. Both pair beautifully with any of their drinks.

WHERE TO FIND IT: Matter Brews is located in Golf Central in Palm Hills, 6th of October.

Sports

It’s all high-stakes matches tonight

The UEFA Nations League hits crunch time: The sixth and final matchday of the UEFA Nations League group stage continues tonight with nine games across all tiers, all scheduled for 9:45pm.

The spotlight is on the Group 1 match in League A between Croatia and Portugal. Cristiano Ronaldo’s squad has already clinched a quarterfinal spot, sitting comfortably at the top of the table with 13 points. Meanwhile, Luka Modrić and his teammates are in second with seven points and need at least a draw to secure qualification while fending off competition from Poland and Scotland, who both trail with four points. Poland vs. Scotland will have its own intensity, as it will decide who is directly relegated to League B as the bottom team and who survives to battle in the relegation playoffs against the League B runners-up.

In Group 4, we have Spain going head to head with Switzerland, with the Spanish team leading the group with 13 points. At the other end of the table, Switzerland trail at the bottom of the table with two points. The second qualifying spot will be decided in a high-stakes match between third-place Serbia, with five points, and second-placed Denmark, currently on seven points.

Moving down to the AFCON 2025 qualifiers: The final round of AFCON qualifiers got underway yesterday and continues today with eight more games this evening. Some are do-or-die; others are merely friendly.

In Group F, Sudan only needs a single point to secure qualification as they face already-through Angola at 6pm. Meanwhile, Libya faces a tougher challenge in Group D: They have to defeat Benin by at least four goals while also relying on Nigeria not to lose to Rwanda to secure progression.

Other key matches today:

  • Nigeria vs. Rwanda (6pm)
  • Tunisia vs. Gambia (9pm)
  • Morocco vs. Lesotho (9pm)

Under the Lamplight

Another tear-jerker from Anne Michael is out

📚 Anne Michaels’ latest novel, Held, pulls you right in and refuses to let go. A Booker Prize nominee, this novel is a masterful addition to the Canadian poet and novelist’s oeuvre, known for its deep and emotional storytelling. In her most recent book, Michaels offers us an unforgettable story of love, survival, and resilience — exploring how we stay connected through even the darkest of times.

The novel opens on a battlefield during World War I in France. John, an English soldier who once worked as a portrait photographer, finds himself surrounded by the haunting quiet of post-battle devastation. His mind, fractured and fading, clings to memories of Helena, a woman he met by chance. Their love story begins when Helena accidentally steps off a train in an unfamiliar town and spots John in the window of a nearby inn.

What follows is a romance that’s haunting, with the two protagonists’ relationship marked by an inevitability that makes it feel like a rom-com. Michael’s portrayal of this intimacy is so intense that it almost hurts. As the story progresses, we’re introduced to their grandchildren and others who wrestle with the same timeless questions about love, trauma, and the endurance of identity over time.

Why pick it up? Michaels’ exploration of love and loss feels both universal and deeply personal. Structurally, the novel is a bit of an adventure too, divided into short, almost poetic segments that steer away from the typical storyline. It’s more of an experience that’s about atmosphere and emotion than traditional plot, perfect for anyone who wants to lose themselves in a story.

You can find the book on Amazon and at Diwan .
