CBE reportedly fines FABMisr and other banks over loan violations

Good afternoon, friends, and welcome to the homestretch. It’s a calm day in the press, with few but impactful headlines making the rounds.

THE BIG STORY TODAY-

?The CBE has reportedly fined FABMisr and other lenders over loans to Beltone Holding; Beltone denies wrongdoing. Asharq Business reported today that the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) has imposed fines on at least three Egyptian lenders for alleged violations of banking regulations related to loans made to Beltone Holding. The website says FABMisr was handed a fine of EGP 1 bn, while other banks, including NBK Egypt, were fined smaller amounts. It also reported that the regulator ordered the dismissal of a top credit officer at FABMisr.

If confirmed, the EGP 1 bn fine would be the largest ever imposed on a bank in Egypt. The CBE has not issued a statement on the matter, while FABMisr responded briefly to Asharq Business, saying it complies with the laws and regulations of the central bank and can’t comment on matters related to its clients.

Beltone says it hasn’t been contacted by the CBE and that it has done nothing wrong. All of its dealings with banks in Egypt comply with CBE regulations, it said in a statement to the Egyptian Exchange (pdf) after the bourse briefly suspended trading of the financial services company’s shares this morning. Beltone added that its “financial position is sound” and that it “continues to meet all its obligations toward financial institutions in a timely manner.”

Bankers we spoke with today pointed to the size of the reported fine as sending a message to the industry. The ten-figure fine would equal nearly 4% of FABMisr’s 2024 net income of EGP 26.3 bn. Market watchers believe the episode highlights the CBE’s renewed scrutiny of credit governance as banks go back to lending amid Egypt’s ongoing monetary-policy easing cycle.

Beltone shares closed down 1.3% today at EGP 3.09 apiece.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD-

? All eyes are back on Gaza after Israel launched its deadliest attack on the enclave since the US-brokered ceasefire agreement was signed. At least 104 Palestinians, including at least 35 children, were killed, and over 200 others were injured. The strike came after Israel accused Hamas of allegedly violating the ceasefire agreement and killing an Israeli soldier. Hamas promptly denied any connection to the incident and reaffirmed its commitment to the agreement. Earlier today, Israel claimed that the ceasefire has been reinstated.

US President Donald Trump defended the attack, noting that the occupying state had a right to “hit back.” Simultaneously, the US president expressed confidence that the ceasefire would hold regardless. "You have to understand Hamas is a very small part of peace in the Middle East, and they have to behave,” he said. Since the ceasefire came into effect, Israel has violated its terms at least 47 times as of 18 October. (Guardian | Bloomberg | BBC | CNN | Reuters)

Experts predict gold mini-bust after historic rally

? The beginning of the end for the gold rush? After a 52% surge that saw gold reach an all-time high of USD 4.4k per ounce, the precious metal is experiencing a sharp correction that some analysts believe marks the beginning of a more significant downturn. As of publication, gold is trading at just over USD 4k per ounce, down 8% from its peak last week. The sell-off has been dramatic, with one session last week seeing gold tumble more than 5% in what marked the steepest percentage decline since April 2013.

A “mini-bust” on the horizon? John Higgins, the chief markets economist at Capital Economics, was cited as saying that the recent pullback is the start of a downward trend that could erase a significant portion of this year’s gains, predicting that the price of gold will fall to USD 3.5k per ounce by the end of 2026 — a decline of more about 13 % from current levels.

The macroeconomic firm’s bearish outlook is the result of four main concerns:

#1- The rally has run too far. First, while gold has pulled back from its peak, it remains up 50% YTD, and even a drop to USD 3.5k would still represent a 30% gain since the beginning of 2025. This suggests that the metal may have gotten ahead of itself.

#2- Central bank appetite may wane. Central bank buying has been a major driver of gold’s rally in recent years, with the share of gold in total reserves surpassing 20%. However, Capital Economics doesn’t expect reserves to continue rising to the levels seen during the high-inflation of the 1980s.

#3- Cooling demand from China. China’s roaring stock market could “reduce the allure” of gold among investors in the country, with asset managers potentially hesitant to buy more gold if it continues to underperform.

#4- The “debasement trade” may be overblown. Higgins doubts that concerns about currency debasement are driving as much gold demand as some believe. The USD has remained stable against other currencies in recent months, while the 10-year US Treasury has rallied, suggesting investors haven’t lost confidence in USD-denominated assets. Instead, Higgins suggests the surge from early August to mid-October was “largely driven by FOMO.”

What’s driving the current sell-off? Chinese and US officials hashed out a framework for a trade agreement over the weekend that would pause steeper US tariffs and Chinese export controls on rare-earths, with US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping set to meet. This progress in trade talks is reducing demand for safe-haven assets like gold. Kelvin Wong, senior market analyst at Oanda, explained, “The fuel for this short-term correction in gold is a readjustment of safe-haven instrument towards more response instrument like global equities due to trade optimism.”

Analysts also say the sell-off followed weeks of heavy buying that pushed gold to overheated levels, prompting investors to lock in gains. The USD has strengthened against rival currencies, making gold more expensive for holders of other currencies. The end of the Diwali festival in India, the world’s second-largest gold consumer, has reduced physical demand.

But the bulls aren’t giving up yet: Despite the bearish short-term outlook from some quarters, not all analysts are turning their backs on gold. Wong noted that while the metal faces near-term downside pressure from position adjustments by short-term traders, “the fundamentals are still bullish for gold.” ING and ANZ analysts echoed this sentiment, suggesting that “the recent declines may provide [a window] for central banks to ramp up purchases,” with ANZ predicting that the bullion will reach USD 4.6k per ounce by June 2026.

Under the Lamplight

A Palestinian woman’s road to resistance

? Nahr spends her blurry days in solitary confinement, thinking back on the chain of events that led her to become a political prisoner under the Israeli government. Against the Loveless World by Palestinian-American author and activist Susan Abulhawa tells the story of a young Palestinian woman, born to a family exiled in Kuwait after the Nakba, who finds her way back to her homeland as she becomes part of the fight for Palestine. Published in 2020, the novel sheds light on gender and political oppression, tracing the toll of survival in displacement.

Abulhawa draws inspiration from her early life in Kuwait to detail Nahr’s life growing up as a refugee and a citizen in the Arab country. During her early youth, Nahr is distant and ambivalent towards Palestine, feeling a stronger connection to the country she grew up in despite her family constantly aching for the homeland they’ve lost. She marries early to a fellow Palestinian who similarly abandons her to return to his first love in the motherland.

Enter Um Buraq. An independent middle-aged Iraqi woman whose reputation precedes her, Um Buraq is rumored to be involved in vague shady dealings and even espionage. She approaches Nahr, naive and helpless, and lures her into prostitution. Um Buraq is a bitter, strong-headed misandrist and self-proclaimed feminist who commissions young women to spend nights with rich older men. The contradiction in her character is striking, even disturbing, a tension Abulhawa acknowledges, noting that “people are complicated and the relationships between exploited women take on many layers.”

Her path to resistance: With the signing of the Oslo Accords, Nahr is finally able to go back to Palestine. She goes primarily to get an official divorce, and ends up falling in love with and marrying her ex husband’s brother, who we’re first introduced to as she starts recounting her life from solitary confinement. Being a resistance fighter, her new husband jumpstarts Nahr’s political radicalization as she is exposed to the horrors endured by the Palestinians under Israeli rule. She assists his combatant group in anti-military operations until she is eventually caught by the Israelis and receives a 16-year prison sentence in “the Cube.”

Nahr leads an emotionally intense life of bereavement. In her solitary confinement, she desperately holds onto her love for Bilal. As she sits in the Cube looking back on her life, she is weighed down by longing, regret, anger, indignation, and a helpless exhaustion. Abulhawa skillfully depicts the brutal reality of solitary confinement through Nahr, establishing an impactful connection between personal trauma and political commentary. Through Nahr’s all-encompassing experience as a Palestinian refugee, Abulhawa blends immersive fiction with cutting history and reality. The book is laced with humor and moments of warmth and hope, making for an engaging read.
