WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Gov’t wants the industrial sector to contribute 20-30% of GDP

Good afternoon folks, and happy Tuesday. Despite the slow news day, the presses here at EnterpriseAM are still churning — sit back, relax, and read on.

THE BIG STORY TODAY-

Egypt is looking to raise the industrial sector’s contribution to the country’s total GDP to 20-30% from its current 14%, Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly said. He also highlighted the government’s plan to up the local component ratio in the industrial sector to 70-80%, up from no more than 40% at the moment.

CORRECTION- We mistakenly referred to Souhoola as CI Capital’s consumer finance firm in today’s issue of EnterpriseAM Egypt — the firm operates under Banque Misr. The story has been amended on our website.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD-

Intel is set to receive USD 7.9 bn in US government grants for its chip manufacturing, with at least USD 1 bn of the funds to be received before December’s end, Reuters reports, citing anonymous government sources. The funds — which will support USD 90 bn worth of the struggling chipmaker’s manufacturing projects in the states of Arizona, New Mexico, Ohio, and Oregon — is the largest amount awarded under the country’s USD 52.7 bn domestic semiconductor production program, also known as the CHIPS Act. “That means American-designed chips being manufactured and packaged by American workers in the United States by an American company for the first time in a very long time,” US commerce secretary Gina Raimondo said.

** CATCH UP QUICK on the top stories from today’s EnterpriseAM:

  • Big reforms to the tax and customs systems are in the works: The government is mulling a permanent exemption for factories from property taxes and either raising the residential tax exemption cap or doing away with it altogether for first homes. The measures are part of a broader plan to revamp the property tax law and resolve ongoing disputes.
  • There’s another USD multi bn ammonia plant in the works, with Polish renewables player Hynfra announcing plans to set up a USD 10.6 bn green ammonia facility in Egypt with production capacity of 1 mn tons per year.
  • UK-based Watercycle Technologies closes Series A round ahead of MENA expansion: UK-based climate-tech startup Watercycle Technologies raised USD 5.6 mn in a series A round led by a syndicate of VC firm Par Equity and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, business accelerator Aer Ventures, and the University of Manchester Innovation Factory.

☀️ TOMORROW’S WEATHER- The chilly temperatures remain constant, with tomorrow’s mercury reaching a high of 20°C and a chilly low of 13°C in the capital, according to our favorite weather app.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Bluesky is giving you full reign over your experience

X competitor Bluesky is doubling down on its user-first philosophy. The new Twitter-like platform has been making waves post-US election, and as the user base grows — by 8.5 mn in the past two weeks — so does anxiety over whether or not another corporate takeover is on the horizon.

(Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links to external sources.)

Users won’t have to worry about the platform becoming an ad-infested hellscape, says CEO Jay Graber. CNBC cited the CEO calling the platform “bn’aire proof” due to its open source design — the app accessible source code, highly customizable feed, refusal to allow targeted ads makes the platform unattractive for buyers … and all the more appealing to users.

What is open source? The platform’s source code isn’t copyrighted, meaning that users and developers can use it to clone the platform without any legal repercussions — users can pack up to migrate to a clone app, bringing their followers with them instead of starting from scratch, if they have reason to leave en masse. “What happened to Twitter couldn’t happen to us,” Graber stated.

What's the plan? Bluesky is sidestepping algorithmic ad models in favor of fundraising rounds and possibly monetizing through subscription features from a growing developer ecosystem. They will allow third-party coders develop mods and features for the app that people can access, subscribe to, or even buy, making the app fully customizable.

Its commitment to privacy, user control, and innovation is popularising itself in a field dominated by X and Threads. Still, with X reportedly pulling in over 318 mn monthly users — down from over 600 mn in May (according to Elon Musk) — and Threads at 275 mn, Bluesky has a long road ahead despite its impressive traction.

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT

A spy mission that’s more about the heart than the heist

? Ted Danson goes undercover — sort of — in A Man on the Inside, the latestcreation from Michael Schur, who brought us classics like The Office, Parks and Recreation, and The Good Place. It’s part heartfelt comedy, part moving moments, and all Danson charm. Inspired by the Oscar-nominated documentary The Mole Agent, this is a spy mission worth watching — not for the thrills, but for the feels.

(Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links to external sources.)

The plot thickens (gently): Charles (Danson), a retired engineering professor adrift after his wife’s passing, spends his days sending newspaper clippings to his daughter Emily (Mary Elizabeth Ellis) and re-reading his favorite spy novels. When Emily urges him to find a hobby, Charles unexpectedly lands himself a peculiar gig: infiltrating a posh retirement community to help private investigator Julie Kovalenko (Lilah Richcreek Estrada) crack a jewelry theft case. Armed with a wire, camera-glasses, and no clue whatsoever, Charles becomes a spy.

Charles awkwardly navigates his mission, but ends up befriending the residents while dealing with painful memories of his late wife’s battle with dementia. What begins as a lighthearted escapade becomes an exploration of loss, rediscovery, and the small joys of building new relationships in unexpected places.

While the laughs don’t come as frequently as in Schur’s previous shows, that’s not the point of the series. A Man on the Inside trades rapid-fire humor for subtle wit and touching storytelling, offering something more reflective and emotionally rich — even Forbes called it one of the best Netflix shows of 2024. If you’re in the mood for a show that’s as heartwarming as it is entertaining, this series delivers.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can watch the series on Netflix, or take a peek on YouTube (runtime: 2:40).

Ears to the Ground

A dive into the world of journalism

? A podcast about the challenges and ethical dilemmas that journalists face. Hosted by Brian Reed, Question Everything dives into journalism’s internal crises, featuring panel discussions with prominent reporters like Ira Glass and personal reflections from investigative veterans like Barton Gellman. These conversations are illuminating but heavily industry-focused, often feeling like a closed-circle dialogue that may not be as legible to listeners outside the media world.

(Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links to external sources.)

While heavily industry-focused, the podcast tries not to alienate non-media listeners. In one of the episodes, Reed interviews a politically divided married couple about their shared trust in a singular news source, focusing on everyday consumers of journalism.

However, the podcast’s generally insider-heavy approach raises questions about whether it actually reaches those who distrust the media. Reed’s nuanced reflections are insightful for those already invested in journalism’s future but may fall flat for listeners who aren’t exactly fans of legacy media sources.

We’re only a few episodes in. Question Everything feels like a work in progress that examines a deeply important issue. Whether Reed can evolve the show into a bridge between journalists and their critics remains uncertain, but for now, it’s a compelling listen for those who care about the future of journalism.

WHERE TO LISTEN: You can listen to the podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and iHeart.
