WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Optimism as the IMF’s fourth review comes to a close

Good afternoon, friends. This newsweek shows no signs of slowing down as we barrel toward the weekend.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

Good tidings for our fourth IMF review: The International Monetary Fund mission has concluded its two-week visit to Cairo and is expected to greenlight the fourth review of Egypt’s loan program with the Fund, three government sources tell EnterpriseAM. The sources noted broad agreement that economic indicators are moving in the right direction, with structural reforms showing tangible progress despite a challenging external environment.

The sources also mentioned Egypt’s strong fiscal performance despite adverse economic circumstances, gesturing to gains from special funds and accounts — which jumped 108% y-o-y to EGP 4.4 bn. Higher contributions from state entities under the government’s new comprehensive budget framework also drove a Finance Ministry surplus of EGP 3.6 bn, up from EGP 2.6 bn during the same period last year. Tax revenue has grown an unprecedented 45% to reach EGP 413 bn in 1Q FY 2024-25, with our improved public debt management also getting a mention, the sources noted.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

ECB flags risks of Eurozone debt and market instability: The European Central Bank (ECB) is raising red flags about mounting threats to the Eurozone’s financial stability, citing high public debt, weak growth, and political uncertainty as potentially auguring a second cascade of sovereign debt crises. The ECB’s annual Financial Stability Review noted that rising borrowing costs for some Eurozone countries — particularly France — could hinder EU investments in defense and climate initiatives as the incoming Trump administration rolls back its international commitments. The ECB also warned of a potential AI-linked asset price bubble, noting that the stock market’s increasing reliance on just a few US tech giants poses the risk of global market disruptions should earnings for these firms not meet expectations. And on that note, Nvidia is set to release its earnings later tonight, with the current world’s most valuable company’s 3Q earnings set to be released after the bell around 11pm Cairo time.

** CATCH UP QUICK on the top stories from today’s EnterpriseAM:

  • Attention, institutional investors: United Bank kicked off its planned offering on the EGX today, with the bank offering shares for up to EGP 15.60 a pop in a private placement, set to run until 25 November. The remaining 16.5 mn share tranche for retail investors will be up for grabs between 27 November and 3 December.
  • Al Dahra to up its Egypt operations: Al Dahra Egypt — a subsidiary of Emirati agribusiness Al Dahra — is planning on investing some USD 200 mn to add between 80k-90k feddans to its land portfolio over the next five years. The company is also looking to invest an additional USD 30 mn on equipment.
  • House gives its final approval to refugee bill: The House of Representatives has voted in favor of a government-drafted bill that aims to establish a legal framework for refugees’ status, rights, and obligations, after the law received preliminary approval on Sunday. FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Is the business school boom a sign of the times, or a shift in priorities?

Booming business school applications may be a sign of the times. Universities across the world have seen a 12% increase in applicants to their business school programs, with American institutions reporting a 72% influx of MBA entrants compared to last year. The last time academic institutions saw a similar spike was during the pandemic, following a historical correlation that indicates distress in the labor market.

Generally speaking, labor market insecurity prompts people to engage in academic pursuits that will improve their future earning potential, writes Fast Company. More morbidly, labor market insecurity also means that more people are unemployed and can dedicate time to further studies.

But is that still the case? Andrew Walker, director of industry communications at the Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC) thinks it may not be as straightforward this time around, telling Fast Company that it is a “more holistic decision” that people are making, with more people picking business school with the belief that it provides the highest financial return on investment. “That’s how business schools are presenting their value proposition,” says Walker.

But ROI means something else to younger candidates. Gen Z applicants viewed future financial security as a secondary benefit to attending business school, with the primary boon being a vehicle to a fulfilling life. “Gen Z candidates [see business school] as a place to find enrichment and to make a positive impact […] and as a means to achieve work-life balance,” confirms a GMAC study.

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT

A journey through grief and the unseen

📺 Billy Crystal steps into the shadows in Before. Apple TV+’s new psychological thriller is a fascinating shift for the iconic comedian, with Crystal embracing a much darker role that brings together psychology and the supernatural.

Eli (Billy Crystal), a child psychiatrist, is haunted by visions of his late wife, Lynn (Judith Light), after her tragic death. Just when he’s barely coping, a young boy named Noah (Jacobi Jupe) begins appearing at his home, scratching at the door in the dead of night, silent and strange. Eli is drawn to the boy, only to learn that Noah is deeply troubled and has a history of behavioral problems that have left him nearly unadoptable.

As Eli begins working with Noah, an eerie connection between the two is revealed; Noah knows things about Eli’s past that he couldn’t possibly have learned on his own. The visions intensify, and the line between Eli’s grief and the supernatural blur as secrets about his wife’s death and the boy’s traumatic past come to light.

In terms of pacing, the show is a slow burn that offers atmosphere and emotional depth but doesn’t rely on traditional horror scares. Though the series leans into horror tropes, it focuses more on grief and unresolved trauma, making it feel as much like a psychological drama as it does a thriller.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can watch the series on Apple TV+ or catch the trailer on YouTube (runtime: 2:19)

DRINK THIS TODAY

Coffee, matcha, refreshers, and a whole bunch of sweet treats

This isn’t your average coffee shop. Shabby Chic is a specialty café and gallery, with a spacious, vibrant interior. The café’s artistic touches make it a perfect spot for a relaxing coffee break or a catch-up session with friends.

For coffee enthusiasts, the crème brûlée latte was a standout. Available in both hot and iced versions, it’s velvety smooth with a rich caramelized sugar flavor — a delightful fusion of dessert and coffee in a cup.

Unfortunately, the matcha was underwhelming. While it was beautifully presented, the flavor lacked the bold, earthy notes matcha lovers often crave.

If you aren’t feeling caffeine, Shabby Chic has other creative options. The hibiscus soda refresher is a delightfully fizzy, floral drink that’s as refreshing as it is unique. It’s a great caffeine-free alternative for anyone looking for something different.

Complementing the drinks is a fantastic selection of fresh baked goods, from flaky croissants to delicious cupcakes. Each bite pairs perfectly with your beverage of choice, making it hard to leave without a full stomach.

WHERE TO FIND IT- Shabby Chic is located at the Strip Mall in Madinaty.

Under the Lamplight

A raw depiction of one family’s beautiful mess

📚 If anyone can paint a family in all its beautiful mess, it’s Jami Attenberg. AReason to See You Again unfolds like a bittersweet, decades-long film reel, highlighting the family rifts, silent pain, and glimmers of joy that define the lives of the Cohen family. Attenberg delivers another gut-punching story where everyone’s a bit broken but never boring.

The Cohens’ saga begins in 1970s Chicago with Rudy, a Holocaust survivor haunted by his own secrets, and Frieda, his anxious, overbearing wife. Their two daughters, Nancy and Shelly, are opposites in nature — Nancy is gentle and quiet, while Shelly is sharp and intense. But when Rudy passes away early on, fissures begin to emerge within the family.

Fast forward a few years, and Nancy is diving into young motherhood with a questionable husband while Shelly escapes to California, starting her career in tech with an emotionally unavailable partner. Meanwhile, Frieda, alone in her grief, leans heavily into alcohol and holding grudges. The years unfold in fragmented scenes, following each character’s attempts to find meaning through moves, messy relationships, and moments of quiet self-discovery.

The book’s sharp wit and raw realism captures the essence of family bonds — messy, enduring, and sometimes painful. This is a must-read for anyone who appreciates complex characters and the emotional push-and-pull of relationships that feel both real and relatable.

WHERE TO FIND IT- You can find A Reason to See You Again on Amazon.
