WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

TMG confirms Iraqi mega project

Good afternoon, all. We have a relatively quiet newsday so far, led by real estate news on the home front and Canada’s federal election globally.

THE BIG STORY TODAY-

TMG confirms multi-bn USD Iraqi project: Real estate giant Talaat Moustafa Group (TMG) is in advanced negotiations with the National Investment Commission of Iraq to establish a 14 mn sqm sustainable mixed-use project in southwest Baghdad, it said in a disclosure (pdf) to the EGX. The disclosure adds color to reports we previously picked up — commission Vica Chairman Salar Mohamed Amin had told regional outlets that TMG is in negotiations to build a USD 10 bn administrative city in Baghdad.

The details: The project will house around 45k mixed-use units. It is set to generate an estimated USD 17 bn in total sales and an annual recurring income exceeding USD 1.5 bn per year upon completion. TMG expects to receive the land for the project from Iraqi authorities by the end of the year.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

The foreign press is still zeroing in on Canada’s federal election: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party secured a victory in Canada’s federal election on Monday in what is projected to become the party’s fourth consecutive term in office. While the counting of ballots is ongoing, the party appeared to win a minority of seats in the 343-member House of Commons, setting the stage for a minority government. This outcome would require them to seek support from opposition parties to pass legislation and maintain power.

It was a sharp turnaround for the Liberals — and Trump was largely behind it: Carney’s party had been trailing until US President Donald Trump imposed sweeping tariffs on Canada and suggested the country should be annexed as the 51st US state. The inflammatory remarks triggered a wave of nationalist sentiment across the country, leading voters to rally behind the Liberals. “Trump is trying to break us so America can own us. That will never ... ever happen,’’ Carney said in his victory speech. (Bloomberg | Associated Press | Washington Post)

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

OpenAI’s new ChatGPT feature lets you compare and buy products

You can now use ChatGPT as your personal shopper, helping you sift through the numerous options, recommendations, and product reviews found online. OpenAI has rolled out a new shopping feature allowing users to compare products and purchase items through merchant websites after being redirected from the ChatGPT interface, according to Bloomberg and Ars Technica.

The new tool — available to both subscribed and unsubscribed users — currently covers a handful of categories, including electronics, fashion, beauty, and home goods, with plans to expand in the future. Users researching items like espresso machines or office chairs can get recommendations based on stated preferences, stored memories, and product reviews scraped from around the web, including user forums like Reddit.

How it works: When clicking on a product image, users will see multiple retailer options like Amazon and Walmart displayed on the right-hand side of the screen, with buttons to complete the purchase. Unlike Google Shopping, which often features sponsored placements, OpenAI says its results are not ads, and the company isn’t receiving affiliate revenue.

The bigger picture: The launch is part of OpenAI’s broader push to position ChatGPT as an “everything app,” whether that’s being a search engine, voice assistant, or video generator to its roughly 500 mn active users. The new feature jeopardizes the revenue streams of traditional product review platforms like CNET and The New York Times’ Wirecutter, which rely heavily on affiliate links for monetization.

We tried the new feature firsthand, and it worked for the most part. When comparing coffee machines under EGP 15k, the chatbot provided a rundown of options available on Amazon Egypt, Noon, Jumia, and Dubizzle, though it wasn’t able to pick up machines listed on more specialized local retailers like Fengany or Cafelax.

EAT THIS TONIGHT

Khobzeh is the latest way to savor your shawarma

Your go-to Levantine comfort food destination: Khobzeh w Shawerma is coming up with previously undiscovered ways to savor your shawerma at their Maadi and Sheikh Zayed branches, introducing fresh combinations of a classic meal to Egyptian streets.

Their variety of khobzehs, another word for pita bread in Shami dialect, was our favorite on the menu. We recommend trying their beef khobzeh with pomegranate molasses — the softness of the pita bread and the tenderness of the beef are complemented by the sharp tang of the molasses. Don’t forget the fries — having a couple with every bite is a very Egyptian way to enjoy this Levantine sandwich.

Their chicken fattah dish doesn’t stray far from a typical Syrian fattah, but has a unique twist. Slices of chicken shawarma are layered above a bed of yellow-colored basmati rice, topped with a creamy yogurt sauce laden with spices. A handful of cashews are added on top to balance out the flavors in the dish, in addition to pickles on the side for a salty kick.

We hear their broast is a crowd favorite: We came for their famous fried chicken — or broast as they call it — which has been the talk of the town on social media, but were heartbroken to find out that it wasn't available in their Maadi branch. So if you're looking to get in on this viral dish, make your way to their Sheikh Zayed branch.

But not everything on the menu made a splash. The Mexican shawerma sandwich, rolled in a saj bread this time, wasn’t a standout. It’s your run-of-the-mill shawerma sandwich, with the addition of a spicy tomiyya sauce — that’s not so spicy —- lacking the burst of flavors and spice you’d usually expect from a Mexican dish.

WHERE TO GET IT- For those residing in Maadi and Sheikh Zayed, you can visit the restaurant in person or call their hotlines — found in their Instagram bio — to order. You can also find them on Talabat and Elmenus.

A Champions League showdown

⚽ All eyes turn to the Emirates Stadium tonight as we prepare for a thrilling match between Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the Champions League semifinal. Kick off is set for 10pm.

The Gunners are making a dramatic return to the Champions League semifinals for the first time since the 2008/2009 season, following a stunning elimination of defending champions Real Madrid with an impressive 5-1 aggregate score in the quarterfinals. PSG has rammed through two English clubs in the knockout stages — Liverpool in the Round of 16, and Aston Villa in the quarters — and now dreams of reaching the final for just the second time in their history after their 2020 appearance.

What makes this matchup even more fascinating is Arsenal’s unbeaten record against PSG in their five previous European encounters. The teams have drawn three times, while the Gunners have claimed victory twice — most recently with a 2-0 score in the group stage of the current championship.

Homeside, we’ll be seeing Enpi taking on Ghazl El Mahalla at 8pm tonight in the third round of the Egyptian Premier League’s relegation group. Enppi enters this crucial match sitting in eighth place — second from the bottom — with 15 points, while Ghazl El Mahalla holds sixth position with 20 points under their belt. Both sides are desperately seeking a victory to boost their qualification chances, knowing that two teams will be relegated to the second division at the season’s end.
