WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Unified Ins. Law is now the law of the land

Good afternoon, friends and happy Monday. We are still waiting for the newscycle to pick up on the second day of the business week. Meanwhile…

PSA-

We have another long weekend ahead. The public and private sectors will be off on Thursday 25 July in observance of the 23 July Revolution, Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly announced today.

THE BIG STORY TODAY-

El Sisi ratifies Unified Ins. Law following approval from the House: President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has given the final approval for the Unified Ins. Law, which will draw up new and comprehensive rules for regulating the ins. industry and widen compulsory ins. coverage, according to the Official Gazette.

What it entails: The law will “regulate ins. companies, special funds, obligatory operations such as highway accidents, and state the new supervisory rules for the ins. industry,” Economic Affairs Committee Head Mohamed Soliman said in April.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD-

The headlines are still following the fallout from the attempted assassination of Donald Trump. World leaders including current POTUS and Trump’s Democratic opponent Joe Biden, have spoken out against the attempted assassination on the presumptive Republican candidate’s life. Despite the Democrats’ decision to halt campaigning, the presidential elections are still underway as planned with Trump’s support. Experts predict that the attack has increased Trump’s odds of clinching the elections. Trump is expected to be formally nominated as a presidential candidate at the Republican National Committee on Thursday. (NYT | Reuters | Bloomberg | CNN)

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

The search for ET is about to get a lot more interesting

The search for aliens may be on the brink of a revolutionary transformation. Breakthrough Listen — a scientific program dedicated to the search for extraterrestrial life — has released a series of groundbreaking technological advancements that are set to significantly improve our ability to detect extraterrestrial civilizations, at the group’s annual conference in Oxford this week. The conference will bring together several hundred scientists from various disciplines to discuss these innovations, reports The Guardian.

So, why the renewed focus on aliens? For over six decades, scientists have been on a quest to find evidence of intelligent life beyond Earth, but so far, the search has sadly come up empty. Despite the lack of definitive proof, the field is now poised for a dramatic shift thanks to this new tech. This includes the construction of colossal telescopes in Chile, South Africa, and Australia, and major strides in AI.

Key among these new tools is the Square Kilometer Array. This is a vast network of radio telescopes being assembled in South Africa and Australia — and the Vera Rubin Observatory in Chile, home to the world’s largest camera capable of imaging the entire visible sky every few nights. Both are set to go online in the next few years, providing essential data for Breakthrough Listen. Remarkably, these advancements are so sensitive that they might even pick up unintended signals, like alien airport radar or powerful TV transmissions.

Google’s Gemini is allegedly invading its users’ privacy. Google’s AI chatbot Gemini has reportedly been caught scanning and reading PDF files off of users’ Google Drives without permission, according to a tweet by Kevin Bankston, senior advisor on AI governance at CenDemTech.

This isn’t Google’s first privacy scandal. The company is facing several lawsuits related to breaching user privacy and accessing data without permission. While those lawsuits are built on Google’s shady user agreements, what makes this instance even more concerning is that they don’t know how Gemini gained access.

Gemini’s privacy settings don’t ask for permission to access user files, meaning that it’s a feature that can’t be disabled. Tom’s Hardware reports that this presents an issue either with the AI or with Google’s servers. Bankston documented his journey to uncover how Gemini was able to trespass. To his surprise, not only did he find the settings that enabled access in a completely different place than it should have been, the accessibility option for Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Docs were disabled. Yet, they were accessed anyway.

Bankston’s findings: Bankston reported that the issue can be traced to a single click, when the button to use Gemini as a tool was pressed just once. Doing so gave Gemini permission to access all documents of the same file type within that user’s Google Drive. He also theorized that enabling Google Workspace Labs could override the user’s privacy settings. The informal investigation is still underway, but the conclusion is that Google has failed the privacy of its user base once again.

The man who fathered 1k children

📺 ON THE TUBE TONIGHT-
(all times CLT)

Diving into fertility fraud in The Man with 1k Kids: Netflix’s new three-part docuseries recounts the true story of multiple couples and single women who discover that their sperm donor, Jonathan Jacob Meijer, was a man with potentially hundreds of offspring — giving their children hundreds of siblings — worldwide.

It explores Meijer’s background, including his motivations, and the fraud he committed with various aliases. Meijer, a Dutch musician and YouTuber, claimed to have become a donor out of a desire to help those struggling with infertility, inspired by a classmate’s plight. Eventually, his relentless pursuit of fathering children became an addiction, driven by a “God-like complex” and a lack of regard for the consequences.

The series also touches on legal and ethical issues, providing a deep look into the lives of the families affected by Meijer’s actions. And if you’re interested to know his whereabouts today, he’s happy to share. Check out his YouTube channel here.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can watch this docu series on Netflix or catch the trailer (watch trailer, runtime: 1:54).

Today in the Nile League: The Mit Okba team will be hosting Baladiyat Al Mahalla tonight at 9pm as a continuation of the postponed round 17 of the Nile League. El Zamalek is currently in sixth place with 44 points, with its sights set on moving up the ranking. Their opponent, Baladiyat Al Mahalla, is in 16th place with 23 points, and is trying to avoid relegation.

Also happening locally: Pyramids is starting its journey in the Egyptian Cup by facing Al Nasr at 8pm.

Argentina, the Copa Champion: Argentina nabbed the 2024 Copa America title after beating Colombia in the final early this morning with a clean goal. Team Tango ends its race with Uruguay and stands alone as the champ with 16 titles under its belt.

🥯EAT THIS TONIGHT-

We know a good bagel when we see one. Nude Bakery recently released a line of bagels and we can confirm that they should not be missed.

Choose your protein. Alongside the bakery’s own turkey melt and lox salmon bagels, they’ve also released two roast beef bagels in collaboration with food blogger Mahmoud El Adany. Is the menu not scratching your itch? You can also customize your own bagel to mix and match as many (or as few) components as you’d like.

The good stuff: We went for the turkey melt bagel and the truffle onion jam roast beef bagel. We loved the freshness of the ingredients — you could tell from the crunch — and how generous the fillings were on both sandwiches. In addition to the comfort of the familiar turkey and cheese combination, the added creaminess of avocado and sourness of pickled red onion made the turkey bagel something worth writing home about.

And the truffle roast beef bagel…other bagel shops will have a hard time matching the ingenuity of this one. The creaminess of the cheddar cheese, the subtle sweetness of the onion jam, and the savory kick of the truffle garlic mayo make this one an instant fave.

Would you like a drink with that? Because they’re interesting. We just had to try their crackdrink (yup, you read that right) where they add hardened chocolate syrup to the inside of your cup. It can be added to any iced drink, and we went for matcha. Between the satisfaction of cracking the chocolate and the flavor it added to a basic staple, we would recommend you give it a whirl. Disclaimer: Treat this drink as dessert.

Pump the breaks. We’re sad to report that the bagels are currently only available at Nude Bakery’s District 5 branch, but happy to say that they’re worth the trip.

💡 UNDER THE LAMPLIGHT-

The Mystery Guest has a familiar feel, it’s not a book that you’ve read. The book is second in the series, following The Maid, and is set in a five-star Regency Grand Hotel. The idyllic life of Molly Gray, the head maid, has been shattered when famous author J.D. Grimthorpe is found dead in the hotel’s tea room. A murder investigation ensues when Detective Stark enters the scene, and the hotel's reputation becomes at stake.

Sound familiar? We thought so too. The book is similar to our popular Ramadan TV drama series Grand Hotel, only with a few twists and turns, and a touch of modernity in characters.

The book has been met with some mixed feelings from critics and readers alike. Some critics called the continuation of the series unnecessary, but some champion it as a book that displays the “ superpower[s] of the pink-collared proletariat ” — those in care-oriented professions — as it falls to Molly to uncover the dirty truth.

You can find The Mystery Guest on Amazon and Diwan.
