WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

THIS EVENING: Egypt signs 10 transport agreements at TransMea

Good afternoon, friends, and happy Monday. It’s a rather calm news day here at home so far, as we keep an eye on regional developments.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

Egypt signed a total of 10 agreements with local and international companies at the TransMea 2022 expo today, according to a Transport Ministry statement. The agreements include four contracts, 5 MoUs, and one framework agreement, covering Cairo Metro projects, working on the fifth phase of the electric light rail train, and design and supply agreements for the electric high-speed rail, among others.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

News from the Israeli assault on Gaza continues to lead the conversation in the international press. US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken’s visits to several countries in the region has been attributed to calming neighboring Arab nations and assuring them that the US is working on controlling the attacks from spreading in the region and to help innocent Palestinians caught in the onslaught. This comes as the IDF reportedly struck 450 aerial targets yesterday and has cut-off the northern area of Gaza as it prepares from a ground invasion. FOR YOUR COMMUTE

AI-generated pornographic images are proliferating using people’s images

If it’s Monday, then it’s time for your constitutionally-required AI news:

AI users have started generating and circulating lewd pictures of women of all ages by inputting photos available online into an AI program, alongside a prompt that allows them to create these images, according to the Washington Post. AI has been a point of conflict since it became available to the public, sparking debates from whether AI-generated art was real art to whether it poses a threat to humanity. The current reality is that the raw computing power now accessible to anyone is putting women and teenagers in very real danger.

Social media influencers were the first to be impacted by this… Gabi Belle, an American YouTuber with almost 600k subscribers, found almost 100 fake photos of herself circulating online, mostly on websites known for hosting AI-generated R-rated content. While Belle was able to get them taken down in July, a new host of depraved images have already surfaced.

…But they won’t be the last. Ordinary women and young girls have already fallen victim to AI-generated R-rated content. Anyone with access to your images can easily plug them into an AI platform with “undressing” tools, or even superimpose your face onto someone in an adult video. The people using these tools aren’t just a few bad apples.

AI-generated R-rated material, enabled by cheap and easy-to-use tools, has seen a 290% rise in the material’s generation in the past five years…

…and there’s nothing you can do about it. Victims don’t have anywhere to turn, as there are no governing laws concerning AI, just yet. Efforts by the G7 summit that took place last week hoped to regulate the development of AI, but the code of conduct is voluntary.

US President Joe Biden signed an executive order to tackle AI risks over this past weekend, but passed no federal law outlawing the use of someone’s likeness without their consent.

Was Elvis a monster? Sofia Coppola’s biopic seems to suggest so, according toLisa Marie Presley. The biopic, based on the 1985 book authored by Priscilla entitled “Elvis and Me” has sparked controversy. After seeing the script, the King’s daughter shared letters prior to her death in 2023 indicating that the film is representing her father negatively and that her mother, Priscilla, has no idea of the impact of this narrative.

In her book, Priscilla wanted to show us Elvis as a man, not just the star. Describing her lifestyle with the legend as difficult, she shares moments which demonstrate Elvis as bent on controlling his partner — from her posture, dress, and her career choices, even before they were married. He treated her as “his living doll,” she shares, even obligating her to wear fake double lashes as she delivered their only daughter, Lisa Marie.

… and it is precisely these incidents that Lisa Marie fiercely objected to, claiming that the film makes her “father only come across as a predator and manipulative” and that even her mother never saw Elvis that way.

But Sofia was intent on sharing Priscilla’s experience as a woman, she said at a press conference, according to Variety. For instance, Priscilla pressed on the fact that Elvis never took advantage of her and waited until their wedding night to become intimate — when she was 21. Elvis was fully aware of the age gap between him and Priscilla, she adds, highlighting that he first met her when she was just 14.

Coppola did openly disagree with Presley’s letters, stating, through a representative, that she hoped that Presley would “feel differently” after seeing the film. In fact, Coppola said that she wanted to honor Priscilla and to show her remarkable love story with Presley’s father from a feminine perspective. But will the film sway Lisa Marie’s opinion? We guess we’ll never really know.

The movie was first released in September in the Venice Film Festival and in the US on November 3, 2023. We still don’t know when it will hit theaters in Om El Donia.

All the Light We Cannot See may disappoint fans of the book

📺 ON THE TUBE TONIGHT-
(all times CLT)

All The Light We Cannot See is a four-episode limited series based on the awardwinning 2014 novel by Anthony Doerr. The series shares the alternating perspectives of a blind French girl hiding in her great uncle’s house and a young German man joining the Nazi military ranks during 1944 towards the end of World War II.

A blind teenage girl, Marie-Laure (Aria Mia Loberti) broadcasts and reads from her braille book. Even though it’s punishable by death to broadcast, she continues in hopes of finding her missing father, the locksmith of the French Museum of Natural History, and to share coded messages of resistance through her broadcasts.

Through these broadcasts he meets Werner (Louis Hofmann), an orphaned Nazi soldier, who is an extraordinarily gifted radio engineer. He keeps Marie-Laure’s broadcasting and location a secret — even though the Nazis have been trying to locate her.

Then a villain is added to the equation. A Nazi general, Von Rumpel, searches for the whereabouts of Marie to find a cursed jewel hidden by her father that he believes will cure him of cancer, the cursed Sea of Flames.

If you read the book, you might be disappointed. The series was not the best depiction of the book’s original success:The acting is consistently lacking, and the dialogue progressively deteriorates. A disappointing discovery as Mark Ruffalo and Hugh Laurie were A-listers that graced the cast.

“The book is the mountain. The mountain will always exist,” explainsShawn Levy, director and executive producer in an interview. He also continues to describe the series as a painting of that mountain. We’re not trying to replace it. We’re not trying to make a photograph or a Xerox. It’s our impression of that mountain.”

You can watch the series today on Netflix.

🍲 EAT THIS TONIGHT-

Ha’noi is Cairo’s first Vietnamese restaurant. Tucked away in the inner corners of Waterway 1, it offers a variety of noodles, Pho, and dumplings.

They offer the classics but watch out for the spice. If you can’t handle the heat make sure you adjust it prior to ordering with your server. Their portions can also oscillate between being too much to meager, depending on the dish, so it’s a good idea to ask whether it’ll be enough for your singular portion or if it’s enough to share.

For appetizers, we picked the shrimp dim sums. This item comes in a four-piece portion, which we initially thought could have been more, but ultimately proved to be quite satisfying — the contents were just right. Inside the dumpling was a concoction of juicy shrimpy which tasted unlike any other Asian restaurant we visited in Cairo and can definitely join the clean-plate club.

The Pho Bo (beef) was a hearty main course but don’t miss out on their duck. Their chicken cabbage salad, Goi Ga, was also a crunchy, tangy experience that tickled the palate. Needless to say, the roasted duck, Vit Quay Sot Cam, was glazed with a sticky ginger honey sauce that stole the show. The outer skin’s crunch was ASMR-worthy as the sweet glaze caramelized while the meat itself was juicy and cooked until tender.

The place is vast and does not require reservations and if you want a change up for dessert there are a variety of other options on the mall strip. Unfortunately the restaurant does not deliver.

💡 UNDER THE LAMPLIGHT-

Ghassan Kanafani’s Palestine’s Children is still relevant today, half a century after publication. Kanafani was a Palestinian author and an active leading member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. He was unfortunately assassinated in 1972 by the Mossad.

In the book, one child copes with the assault on his homeland with naive idealism, another participates in armed resistance. Each story is suffused with sadness — narratives of systemic murder and collective punishment told through the eyes of wide-eyed children.

Return to Haifa, the most well-known story, tells the tale of Palestinian parents who were unable to find their child after an attack, only to find him years later raised by the Polish settlers who moved into their apartment.

Ghassan’s collection documents some of the worst circumstances his people endured from the 1930s to the 1960s. Anyone interested in learning about the heartbreaking realities of the Palestinian people, as well as their unbreakable spirit, will find both in this collection.

The collection of stories can be found on Amazon.
