WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

LPG cylinders may be exempt from upcoming fuel price hikes

Good afternoon, friends, and happy hump day. Despite tomorrow’s meteorological respite, the news cycle seems to be heating up.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

Will the trusty anbooba be exempt from the upcoming fuel price hikes? The government is currently studying the impact of exempting liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders — most commonly used for cooking — from the upcoming fuel price hikes to help contain inflation, three government sources told EnterpriseAM. The sources stressed that the 1.2 mn LPG distributed daily by the government are sold at less than 30% of their actual cost, excluding distribution and transportation.

It looks like diesel will also be spared the planned price hikes next month — again in the interests of keeping inflation at bay. A government source told us late last week that diesel may also be excluded from the coming hike, with other petroleum products shouldering a larger portion of the increase.

The government is also thinking about converting its vehicles to run on natural gas in the interests of slimming expenses. Authorities are now surveying all vehicles owned by government entities to convert them fully to natural gas, which is cheaper than gasoline or diesel, to reduce fuel expenses across the state apparatus, another source told us. The Finance Ministry’s General Authority For Government Services will oversee the conversion process to keep costs low.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

Trump dominates today’s headlines — as yesterday’s meeting with Netanyahu shares the spotlight with ramped up deportation efforts and a likely government shutdown.

US President Donald Trump has reportedly secured Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s support for a US-sponsored agreement to end the war on Gaza. Speaking at a joint White House press conference yesterday, Trump said they were “beyond very close” to an elusive peace accord for the Palestinian enclave, adding, however, that Israel would have full US support to “take whatever action they deemed necessary” if Hamas turns down the proposal. (Reuters | CNN)

The White House released a 20-point document calling for an immediate ceasefire, an exchange of hostages, Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, Hamas disarmament, and a transitional government led by an international body. (Bloomberg)

Meanwhile, the Trump administration has deported approximately 100 Iranians in one of its most controversial deportation efforts to date. A US-chartered flight took off from Louisiana in the early hours of the morning in coordination with the Iranian government. The deportees had all sought asylum in the US, and had either been denied or had not yet appeared before a judge. (New York Times)

ALSO- A looming federal government shutdown appears increasingly likely after a White House meeting between Trump and congressional leaders from both parties failed to bridge deep partisan divides. A shutdown would furlough hundreds of thousands of federal workers, halt various government services, and potentially impact economic activity. The impasse reflects broader partisan gridlock in Washington. (CNBC)

☀️ TOMORROW’S WEATHER- The mercury is dipping ever so slightly in the capital tomorrow, with the temperature set to cap at 32°C in the morning and cool to 22°C in the evening, according to our favorite weather app.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Your new shopping assistant represents a new era in e-commerce

AI has officially entered the e-commerce realm as OpenAI introduces Instant Checkout through ChatGPT. The move follows advances in AI-assisted shopping by companies like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft, who have enabled product discovery and hunting through their platforms. With the launch of the Instant Checkout feature for US users, e-commerce is witnessing a transformation in how businesses market to consumers — while traditional Google search advertising takes a back seat (or potentially gets kicked out of the car).

OpenAI debuts this feature to its 700 mn weekly userbase, many of whom are non-paying users, providing the AI powerhouse with a new monetization channel. Etsy is the first to support Instant Checkout, with over a mn Shopify merchants — including brands like Glossier, Skims, Spanx, and Vuori — expected to join soon. Beyond helping users find products they want, the feature keeps users within the chat interface as they check out and secure their payments. The launch currently allows for single-item purchases, with multi-item carts on the way.

How the payments work: In partnership with digital payments platform Stripe, OpenAI co-developed the Agentic Commerce Protocol, an open standard for AI commerce that provides the language for AI agents and businesses to work together to complete purchases. The protocol is open-source and available for any merchant or developer to build integrations. After users receive product suggestions and select a product they like, Instant Checkout is enabled — all it takes is a tap on the “Buy” button to confirm their order, shipping, and payment details without leaving the chat.

Is it safe to trust the AI agent with sensitive information? OpenAI says it is. The company has built the system with trust in mind: users explicitly confirm each step before any action is taken, payment details are secured through encrypted tokens only authorized for specific amounts and merchants with user permission, and only the information required to complete the transaction is shared with the merchant.

How merchants fare in this new setting: Merchants have to navigate uncharted territory in how they reach consumers under this new model. To participate, merchants join Instant Checkout for a small fee to OpenAI on each purchase. OpenAI claims the fees won’t interfere with product results, stating that searches will yield “organic and unsponsored [products] ranked purely on relevance to the user.”

But there appears to be a contradiction in OpenAI’s approach. While the company states that Instant Checkout items are not preferred in product results, it also acknowledges that ChatGPT considers multiple factors when ranking merchants, including “availability, price, quality, whether a merchant is the primary seller, and whether Instant Checkout is enabled.” This raises questions about how truly unbiased the results will remain.

Security risks and future implications: This new online shopping experience carries potential security risks and shortcuts to exploitation. Currently, OpenAI requires users to explicitly agree to each step of the purchasing process, but as AI agents become more sophisticated, users may be able to authorize the AI models to act more “agentically” and actually make purchases based on a prompt without checking back with the user. Such autonomous purchasing capabilities, already under development and partially available, could introduce new vulnerabilities — easy to joke about now — if not carefully managed.

EAT THIS TONIGHT

Put down the takeout box

? Asian Corner is more than your typical fast-casual Chinese spot. While they do have quick-service locations, their full-service restaurants offer something special — an extensive menu with impressive variety that makes it worth taking the time to sit down and enjoy a proper meal.

Starting strong: The crispy chicken appetizer is a standout that shouldn’t be missed. It delivers that coveted social media-worthy crunch, but still manages to be juicy on the inside. It pairs beautifully with just about any dish or sauce you throw at it. The vegetable spring rolls are another W, striking just the right balance between filling and wrapper. But we’re sad to say that the wontons failed that test, with too much dough and not enough filling to make them memorable.

The main event: The sweet and sour chicken is excellent, with a tangy, well-balanced and flavorful sauce that hits the spot. The kung pao chicken has great flavor, but leans a little too close to the sweet and sour profile without bringing the heat you’d typically expect. The teriyaki chicken is another highlight — perfectly glazed and packed with flavor. If you’re looking for more surf than turf, the sweet and sour shrimp is a solid choice, with generous portions of fresh shrimp every bit as satisfying as the poultry version.

A sushi detour: Asian Corner also offers a full sushi menu. While it won’t blow you away, it’s a dependable option when you’re in the mood for the Japanese staple. The selection is broad enough that you can order a platter to share with friends or build a full meal around it.

WHERE TO FIND IT- Asian Corner has dine-in branches in Heliopolis and Maadi, and offers delivery through Talabat, ElMenus, or directly via their website.
