THE BIG STORY ABROAD-

It’s a calm day on the business front, with international headlines dominated by the latest developments between Israel and Palestine.

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich greenlit a plan to build a settlement with more than 3k homes in the occupied West Bank, in a bid to “bury” the idea of a Palestinian state, Reuters reports. The settlement, dubbed the E1 project, would cut off East Jerusalem from the West Bank, further limiting movement between cities for Palestinians. (Reuters | BBC | Guardian)

ALSO- Over 100 international organizations have inked a joint letter calling for an end to Israel’s “weaponisation of aid” amid starvation. The signees include humanitarian groups Oxfam and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), who noted that they constantly risk being banned from entry in the case of noncompliance with Israel’s “vague and politicised criteria.” Israel’s aid registration requirements include the “mandatory submission of details of private donors, complete Palestinian staff lists, and other sensitive information about personnel for so-called ‘security’ vetting to Israeli authorities,” the letter reads. FOR YOUR COMMUTE

In person interviews are back in fashion — and AI is to blame

? In person job interviews are making a comeback, according to the Wall Street Journal. Overreliance on AI in hiring processes seems to be backfiring on a lot of companies, with candidates using it to cheat or “scam” their way through applications. Once the norm, virtual interviews are starting to bring about mistrust between recruiters and dishonest job applicants. Falling back on face-to-face meetings seems to be the only way to weed them out.

A double-edged weapon. AI is entangled on both sides of the hiring process with recruiters relying on it to filter through resumes, and job seekers counting on it to fine-tune job applications. When recruiters encountered interview fraud — such as fake applications, deepfakes, or cheating during technical interviews with the help of AI, they started implementing at least one round of in person interviews to guarantee that both the candidate’s identity and skillset exist. Cisco, Mckinsey, and Google are some of the companies to start demanding in person interviews this year.

The research certainly supports this move. A survey conducted by research and advisory group Gartner shows that out of 3,000 job seekers, 6% revealed they had participated in some kind of interview fraud. With Gartner’s prediction that one in four job candidate profiles will be fake by 2028, it’s likely that many companies will soon follow suit with necessary in-person meetings.

Spotting AI in the hiring process: Companies that are still on board with virtual interviews are now going the extra mile to catch AI fraud in action. Taking note of off-screen whispering or typing and pausing before responding, for example, are some ways recruiters can detect cheating in video interviews.

“As far as mimicking existing profiles and actually doing well in interviewing processes, these fake profiles are really good,” Rosa Bazyluk, head of Talent Acquisition at AI-powered mortgage lender Tomo, says. Some employers are starting to utilize services that can help them in digital background checks and deepfake detection. Cisco even partnered with a company to verify the identities of job candidates through biometrics.

Under the Lamplight

Revisiting late Egyptian author Sonallah Ibrahim’s Zaat

?Zaat by late Egyptian author Sonallah Ibrahim is a chronicle of political and social transformation in modern Egypt. Published in 1992 and spanning 350 pages, Zaat is a literary work that tells the story of an entire society, not just its titular character. Upon its release, the novel proved polarizing — sparking waves of both acclaim and criticism for its bold premise and critique of Egyptian society.

A life in words: Zaat is a lower-middle class Egyptian woman who readers follow across decades, from her birth during the 1952 revolution until the late ‘90s. We follow as Zaat pursues an education, marries Abdelmaguid — a bank employee — and raises their children. Throughout its length, Zaat grapples with questions about her identity and place in Egyptian society during a time of major political and economic turmoil. Just like life, the novel does not follow a linear path; instead, one with quite a few roadblocks. Ibrahim utilizes time jumps and offers vignettes of a life lived under pressure.

A study in narrative structure: Ibrahim interjects his work with chapters that include newspaper clippings and headlines as a parallel narrative alongside Zaat’s own story. This isn’t a decorative choice, but rather a real-time mirror of the events with a direct impact on Zaat. This juxtaposition offers a critical perspective that doesn’t limit the novel to its central character. Ibrahim’s language is controlled, concise, and sharp. There are no descriptive exaggerations nor purple prose — in doing so, Ibrahim rids the reader of any feelings of nostalgia in favor of a recollection of a harsh past reality.

Zaat is a mature literary work, a novel that avoids the pitfall of becoming a manifesto, refusing to hide itself behind verbal aggression. The beauty of Zaat lies in its controlled tone and innovative structure, becoming a mirror to reality. This is a story of Egypt, not merely its headlines.

An acclaimed adaptation: The novel was adapted into a television series that aired during Ramadan 2013, titled “Bint Ismaha Zaat,” and directed by Kamla Abu Zekri and Khairy Beshara. While the adaptation did not change the core of the novel, it reshaped its rhythm to fit the medium, continuing its events until the 2011 revolution.

Sonallah Ibrahim passed away yesterday at the age of 88. Ibrahim was not just a storyteller, but a historian. His passing marks the end of a career that enriched Arabic literature and opened doors for experimental narratives.
