WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Changzhou Rameda to invest USD 22.6 mn in new textile manufacturing facility

Good afternoon, friends. It’s another slow news day, and we’ve got a brisk issue for you.

THE BIG STORY TODAY-

China’s Changzhou Ramada will invest USD 22.6 mn to build a textile manufacturing facility in the Qantara West Industrial Zone, according to a Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) statement.

The details: The 80k-sqm plant will produce home textile fabrics and garments, with an annual capacity of 5k tons of fabric, 4 mn bed cover sets, and 1 mn car carpet sets. Some 90% of output will be exported. The project will create 1.5k direct jobs once operational.

IN NUMBERS- The Qantara West Industrial Zone secured 32 projects worth over USD 822.2 mn in total investments, expected to create 45.6k direct jobs, SCZone head Walid Gamal El Din said. The authority aims to develop the zone into a fully integrated base for textiles, ready-made garments, and accessories, with strong export orientation.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD-

It’s a slow news day on the business front, with international headlines dominated by the latest developments in Gaza.

Israeli airstrikes target journalists: At least five Al Jazeera journalists, including correspondent Anas Al Sharif, were killed in an Israeli airstrike near Shifa Hospital in Eastern Gaza on Sunday. The Israeli military claimed that it had targeted Al Sharif over alleged involvement with Hamas — a claim rejected by Al Sharif himself prior to his death. “I urge you not to let chains silence you, nor borders restrain you. Be bridges toward the liberation of the land and its people,” Al Sharif’s “will and final message,” published on X shortly after his death, reads. (Reuters | CNN | BBC)

MEANWHILE- Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that the country will recognize the Palestinian state at the upcoming UN General Assembly in September, joining Canada, France, and the UK, as anger builds over Israel’s military operations in Gaza. "A two-state solution is humanity's best hope to [...] bring an end to the conflict, suffering and starvation in Gaza," Albanese said. New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters also said his country might follow a similar path: “our recognition of a Palestinian state is a matter of when, not if.” (BBC | Reuters | Guardian | CNN)

☀️ TOMORROW’S WEATHER- We’re in for a particularly warm day, as temperatures in Cairo are set to peak at 40°C, before cooling down to 26°C. Temperatures are also rising across the North Coast, with a high of 32°C and a low of 26°C, according to our favorite weather app.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Workplace loyalty is dead — and so is bargaining power

?Corporate employees seem to be losing ground in the face of emerging cutthroat management practices. In a lengthy memo to his managers published in Business Insider, CEO of telecom giant AT&T John Stankey offers a grim look into the coming years of the corporate workplace. Following the results of an employee engagement survey, Stankey blatantly declared that workplace loyalty “is dead.”

A “conscious shift” is underway. The unanticipated memo outlines multiple changes in AT&T’s values, rejecting loyalty as one of them — a once highly valued element of workplace culture. Stankey addresses expectations, stating that the company has “consciously shifted away from some of these elements.” He makes clear what employees should expect, underlining basic workplace rights like a “professional, well-maintained, and functional facility.”

The undercurrents of RTO mandates. Since the recent push for RTO among employers, opinions on remote and in-office work have clashed, with many employees leaning towards hybrid work models and consequently quitting their jobs. In response to complaints about his five-day RTO mandate, Stankey explicates in his memo that in-office presence is a non-negotiable as he points out to dissenting employees the “disconnect” between them and their “current professional choice.”

If that doesn’t make clear how expendable he views his employees, Stankey goes on to add that they have “every right to find a career that is suitable to your aspirations and needs.” This sentiment aligns with recent speculations that RTO mandates are covert shortcuts to layoffs.

Are Machiavellian CEOs making a comeback? The clear-cut dictations revealed by Stankey’s memo signify a striking utilization of fear to make sure his demands are being met. While methods of employee motivation have never been nailed down, the use of fear is a tactic that has failed over the course of history. Regardless, managers seem to be taking advantage of the white collar recession, believing that a few subtle threats won’t prompt employees to leave. And if they do leave, they have a safety net in AI — and a smaller workforce means less money spent.

Ears to the Ground

Everything you need to know about everything

?Scientifically succinct: Launched in 2010, The Science of Everything was brought to life by James Fodor, who felt an unquenchable thirst for sharing the most interesting scientific tidbits. Now approaching 150 episodes — each about an hour long — the podcast tackles the science behind natural phenomena and everything else that sparks curiosity in the world.

It’s the science of everything — literally. The podcast covers a slew of topics, from genetics, nutrition, and psychology to space, tech, and pop culture. Fodor delves into many issues that his curiosity leads him to examine, following a clear scientific approach. His educational background in politics, economics, philosophy, history, and physics is evident in each and every episode.

What is a personality? In one particular episode, Fodor discusses the scientific definition of a personality, distinguishing it from other overlapping concepts like social psychology. He touches on the historical context and development of the concept of the personality through the work of other field pioneers, such as Freud and Jung. Fodor divides the episode into three main segments that — from his perspective — form a person’s personality: individual traits, values, and narrative identity.

Lectures on the go: Fodor — who is pursuing a PhD in computational neuroscience and linguistics at the University of Melbourne — presents every episode with heart, soul, and a dedication to education. Despite the long episodes that lack any audio effects, the podcast offers a great educational experience for the curious among us.
