WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Gov’t refutes increasing gas prices for industry

Good afternoon, friends. We hope you had a nice, calm weekend and enjoyed the cooler weather we got for a change. The news cycle seems to be taking a breather, and we’re taking a page out of its book.

THE BIG STORY TODAY-

The government did not increase gas prices for industry at the start of the month, a government source told EnterpriseAM in response to unconfirmed reports over the weekend that sparked concern in the manufacturing sector. Factories haven’t received any official notifications regarding any increase, Chamber of Building Materials Industries head Ahmed Abdel Hamid confirmed to EnterpriseAM.

The question isn’t if gas prices will rise, the question is when. With the country increasingly relying on expensive LNG imports to help fill the gap between local demand and supply, the country’s energy import bill is cranking up — and someone’s got to foot the bill. It’s only a matter of time before the government tries to get the private sector to share more of this financial burden; however, the government is yet to make a decision on the matter and is closely watching disinflation progress, our export push, and the strengthening of the EGP against the USD before making any move, our government source told us.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD-

OPEC+ members have reached a preliminary agreement to boost oil output by 548k barrels per day in September amid fears of supply disruptions from Russia. Member countries — including Saudi Arabia — are set to reach a final agreement today, with no more production cuts planned.

The group has been cutting back on production for several years, reversing course earlier this year to regain market share. Output increases began in April at 138k bpd — causing oil prices to drop to a four-year low. The increases continued, rising to 411k bpd in May, June, and July, and are set to remain at 548k bpd in August. If production levels continue through September, the group will have effectively reversed its 2.2 mn bpd production cut made in 2023. (Bloomberg | Reuters)

Hiring loses momentum in US job market

?The US job market is bearing the brunt of President Donald Trump’s trade policies — and possibly AI. July’s jobs report indicates a recession, with key indicators including slowing hiring rates and rising unemployment among college graduates, according to Fortune.

Job growth falls short of forecasts: Predictions of 100k new jobs were blindsided by the reality of only 73k new jobs across the US in July. The decline follows May and June’s drastic cuts in job growth estimates, reaching a staggering combined drop of 258k jobs. CNN reports that these job gains are the weakest since December 2020, and this year’s job creation pace is so far the worst in decades.

Employers’ concerns over hiring are justified. Uncertainty in Trump’s trade policies and tariff rates is the reason why hiring is a risky undertaking at the moment. While immigration policies have not led to lay-offs, they could have played a role in decreasing demand for labor, especially for jobs dependent on migrant workers. Healthcare and social assistance were the main sectors contributing to job gains in July, whereas federal employment slumped with a loss of 12k jobs, according to the Guardian. To make matters worse, JPMorgan warns that “a slide in labor demand of this magnitude is a recession warning signal.”

Fresh college graduates are among the hardest hit by unemployment. Major decisions like hiring are being put on the back burner. Consequently, entry-level jobs are being increasingly replaced with AI, holding back careers for fresh graduates. Economist Brad DeLong, however, believes that AI is not the main culprit for youth unemployment. Resorting to AI for risk aversion seems to be a reactive adjustment to the bigger economic setbacks at play.

Fake news? Trump certainly thinks so. Just hours after the report was released, the US president fired Bureau of Labor Statistics commissioner Erika McEntarfer, who he accused of “faking” the numbers. “Today’s jobs numbers were rigged in order to make the Republicans, and me, look bad,” Trump said on Truth Social.

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT

A Real Pain is exactly that

?A tale of two cousins: A Real Pain recently hit the screens with an exploration of grief, family, cultural identity and the repercussions of history. The film marks Jesse Eisenberg’s sophomore directing role in a movie in which he also plays one of the two main roles.

The dynamic between two cousins is at the heart of the story: While David (Jesse Eisenberg) embodies a serious, tightly-wound persona — a character who is successful in his personal and professional life but emotionally repressed — Benji (Kieran Culkin) plays the aimless and unfiltered cousin in touch with his emotional self. The love-hate dynamic between the two is at the center of the movie.

The movie begins with the cousins learning of their grandmother’s passing — which pushes them to plan a trip to visit her homeland of Poland, where Jewish people have endured years of persecution. Our main characters are grieving the loss of a loved one, yet this emotion is mounted by unresolved generational trauma that is soon awakened. While Benji seems to be more impacted than David, we’re left to explore the different ways in which each character deals with this awakened pain.

A story of identity and self-exploration: Throughout the trip, each cousin explores himself through the interlinkage between their past and present. Their relationship — which they discover has largely changed since they were little kids — is dominated by feelings of anger and jealousy, which they work through allowing them to heal.

The movie is a raw and honest portrayal of grief and pain, and the many ways in which they can be experienced. However, the constant shift between witty humour and moments of deep sorrow at times felt a little poorly executed, leaving us confused. A Real Pain is a touching, relevant portrayal of what it means to carry the weight of past, present, and future generations.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can stream A Real Pain on Disney Plus. You can also watch the trailer on YouTube (runtime: 1:02).

INSIDE INDUSTRY

Federation of Egyptian Industries urges FinMin to activate first phase of new EGP 30 bn initiative to support priority industrial sectors

? The Federation of the Egyptian Industries (FEI) is urging the Finance Ministry to swiftly activate the first phase of the new EGP 30 bn initiative to support companies in priority industrial sectors, with a number of industrial chambers complaining from a delay in implementing the initiative and providing the needed finance, industry insiders told EnterpriseAM.

The Industry Ministry launched the first phase of the new EGP 30 bn financing initiative back in April, offering reduced 15% interest rates to seven priority industrial sectors, including the pharma, food, engineering, chemicals, textiles, mining, and building materials. The initiative, which was announced in December, aims to help private players finance the purchase of new machinery, equipment, and production lines at the discounted rate for five years. Some projects will get an even more favorable rate, with an additional 2% cut for projects that boost local added value or introduce new industrial activities that could replace imports.

Despite being officially launched three months ago, “the initiative has not yet come into effect, despite the chamber notifying its affiliated factories, which have completed all required paperwork and requirements and finalized all bank requests within the initiative, Chamber of Engineering Industries head Mohamed El Mohandes told EnterpriseAM. He attributed that delay to the Finance Ministry, which has not yet allocated the funds or disbursed the necessary credits for each factory.

But there’s disagreement on the reason for the delay, with the Finance Ministry “waiting for the complete list from the Industrial Development Authority to start the disbursement," an official from the ministry told us.

The pharma sector is one of the most affected industries. "We have a large list of company requests, exceeding 100 factories, awaiting approvals to obtain the required financing… They [the government] told us that the pharmaceutical sector will be prioritized, but so far, not a single factory has received any of its allocated funding," a source from the FEI’s Pharmaceutical Industries Chamber told us.

These companies are awaiting financing worth EGP 7.5 bn, while the engineering, food, chemical, apparel, and building materials sectors will share the remaining of the funds allocated for the first phase.

“Between 50 and 60 new factories are awaiting the activation of this initiative after having completed establishment and construction procedures. The process is stalled on the purchase of machinery and equipment due to the currently high dollar valuation,” FEI’s member Mohamed El Bahy told EnterpriseAM. Therefore, this initiative will help these factories that are hit hard by the high exchange rate to start operations.

Under the initiative, factories will not receive cash-in-hand nor direct financing and as the funding will be instead used to purchase production lines, machinery, and equipment, according to El Mohandes, who called for action, even if gradual, to disburse funds to factories that have met all conditions.

ICYMI- The government last year suspended a EGP 120 bn program for industrial and agricultural players that it had approved in March after the initiative ran into difficulties and reportedly benefitted only a few industrial players.
