WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Turkey’s Bony to set up USD 100 mn textile facility

Good afternoon, friends, and congratulations on making it to the end of the week. As things inch closer to normal following the aftermath of the Ramses data center fire, it seems the news cycle is starting to take a breather.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

Turkish textile heavyweight Bony will set up a USD 100 mn textile factory in Elsewedy’s Tenth of Ramadan Industria zone under an agreement it inked with ElSewedy Industrial Development, according to a statement from the General Authority for Investment and Freezones. Bony will purchase a 120k sqm plot of land in Industria that will be designated a special freezone and developed into the site of the new factory. The facility is slated to kick off operations by the end of 2026 and create around 2.5k jobs, with a view to export to European and African markets.

The agreement was finalized during a promotional mission to Istanbul last June, led by ElSewedy Electric CEO Ahmed ElSewedy and backed by Egypt’s Commercial Office in Istanbul.

ICYMI- Earlier this year, Turkish press reported that Bony’s retail clothing brand Katia & Bony plans to launch sock manufacturing operations in Egypt with investments of USD 50 mn.

Turkey’s garment industry has been doubling down on Egypt as of late. Just last month, Turkey’s Şirikçioğlu inked an agreement to establish a USD 20 mn denim factory in the Qantara West Industrial Zone. Meanwhile, two undisclosed Turkish companies were reportedly eyeing acquisitions in Egypt’s spinning and weaving sector, with a combined investment of USD 30 mn. And in just the past six months, 19 Turkish apparel firms have applied to set up operations in the Suez Canal Economic Zone.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

Trump’s escalating tariff war with Brazil continues to dominate headlines in the foreign press: Financial markets recoiled following US President Donald Trump’s threat to slap Brazil with a 50% tariff on its exports to the US. The BRL slipped 3% against the USD, while US equity futures slid and S&P 500 contracts retreated 0.2%. Trump had leveled the threat in a letter to Brazil on Wednesday in protest over charges against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, describing the trial as a “witch hunt.”

Trump’s latest tariff threat was met with a sharp response from President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who shot back in a social media post saying Brazil will not be “tutored” and that its justice system will not be “subject to interference or threat.” Lula convened top cabinet members for a meeting at the presidential palace shortly after the tariff announcement.

☀️ TOMORROW’S WEATHER- It’s another warm day in Cairo tomorrow, with the mercury set to peak at 36°C, before cooling down to 23°C at night. Cooler weather is expected across the North Coast, with a high of 28°C and a low of 25°C, according to our favorite weather app.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Perplexity’s Comet is coming to shatter the Google search bar

The age of hyperlinks could be nearing its end. AI is coming for the reign of the Google search bar, and rising AI startup Perplexity is leading the charge. On Wednesday, the search startup officially launched Comet — its latest AI-powered web browser that ditches scrolling in favor of conversations, according to Gizmodo. The traditional search model that we’ve all come to know is what Comet is targeting, seeking to replace it with a more personalized search experience.

Comet is meant to function as “your second brain.” Similar to how OpenAI’s ChatGPT operates — with an added feature of browser tabs — Comet aims to get up close and personal through generative conversations to smoothly yield results exactly the way you want them. It runs on user activity and past searches to contextualize responses, while keeping up with research threads. The browser will eventually come to “learn how you think, in order to think better with you,” according to Perplexity’s official press release. In short: It will all but get in your head as it responds to your queries directly and intuitively.

Though AI chatbots have long raised red flags with hallucinations and often-inaccurate information, Perplexity stands out for providing more accurate, citation-backed responses. This already gives Comet an edge as an AI-generated search engine, as it prepares to take on search engine giant Google.

Is time running out for Google? The very thing Google’s empire was built on is now under threat. The experience of a Google search and looking through countless links — a valuable aspect of research — is what Perplexity describes as a “primitive” way to use the internet. Google’s attempt to keep up, particularly through its AI mode, has not exactly proven successful, with a slew of publishers accusing the search giant of theft — given that it scraped websites for content without proper credit and made it difficult for publishers to opt out if they weren’t happy with the situation.

Comet isn’t the only comet hitting Google. OpenAI is following suit as it prepares to launch its own AI-powered search engine in the coming weeks, according to Reuters. Were OpenAI’s browser to be adopted by the chatbot’s 500 mn weekly users, Google could be in for an even tougher time, seeing as search accounts for three-quarters of Alphabet’s revenue, according to the newswire.

So, what’s the catch with AI-powered browsers? The main concern for a unified AI-powered browser experience is potentially putting individual publishers out of business, and keeping original sources away from the user experience. Instead of relying on search engine optimization, online publishers will have to prioritize AI visibility to maintain revenue.

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT

The fourth season of The Bear is finally here

? Kitchen chaos makes a comeback. The fourth season of Christopher Storer’s TheBear is finally here, and we’d suggest getting ready for another emotional rollercoaster. With the third season ending on a cliffhanger and keeping us on edge about the food critic’s review that hit Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) and his team, we can now take a breath and dive right back into this motley crew of chefs-turned-family.

Carmy is no longer at the center of the story. The fourth season spotlights the characters that helped Carmy bring his fine dining restaurant — The Bear — to life. Viewers are brought into the worlds of Carmen’s sous-chef Sydney, his cousin Richie, as well as chefs Tina, Marcus, and Ibrahim — characters dominated by both passion and anxiety. It’s one big family now – with every member having a hands-on role in the day-to-day running of the restaurant — and playing a crucial role that will either make or break the restaurant’s dreams for a Michelin star.

When it comes to cinematography, The Bear has cracked the code. While some might find the cinematography choices to be somewhat jarring or even disorienting at times — with repeated close-ups, unconventional angles and fragmented shots — this approach is anything but coincidental. The visuals are a vivid representation of the characters’ emotional core, often colored by the themes of grief and anxiety.

Running a restaurant isn’t a walk in the park. Every season is a portrayal of the time, effort, patience, and mistakes that come with opening a restaurant. From complex plating techniques and menu revisions to ticking clocks and relentless heat, The Bear accurately depicts the chaos that comes with kitchens. To put it short: you’re in for a culinary lesson.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can stream the new season of The Bear on Disney+. You can also watch the show’s trailer on YouTube (runtime: 2:31).

PSG storms into Club World Cup final + Wimbledon semi-finalists confirmed

PSG reigns supreme. PSG has proved itself as a football powerhouse to be reckoned with, after demolishing the powerful and star-studded Real Madrid with a clean 4-0 victory in yesterday’s Club World Cup semi-finals.

Enrique’s PSG took hold of the match and all but toyed with Alonso’s Real Madrid. This was evident in both ball possession and the number of big chances created by both sides.

We now have our top two finalists. Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea — who qualified two days prior after defeating Fluminense — will go head-to-head in the Club World Cup finals, kicking off on Sunday at 10pm.

IN THE WORLD OF TENNIS-

? Wimbledon’s final four now set. The semi-finalists for the Wimbledon Championships have been revealed, leaving us just hours away from the semi-final clashes before this year’s champions are crowned.

Women’s singles-

Bencic inspires. Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic stole the spotlight yesterday after defeating seventh seed Mirra Andreeva in straight sets (7-6, 7-6), reaching the Wimbledon final lap for the first time in her career. Bencic had been away from the courts for about a year before giving birth and deciding to return, eyes set on victory. Were Bencic to secure victory, she would become the first mother to do so since the 1980s.

New faces in the final four. Poland’s Iga Świątek, world No. 8, qualified for the first time in her career yesterday, after defeating Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova in straight sets (6-2, 7-5) in a match that lasted just under the two-hour mark.

Today’s semi-final matches:

  • Aryna Sabalenka (1) vs. Amanda Anisimova (13) (3:30 PM).
  • Belinda Bencic (35) vs. Iga Świątek (8) (4:30 PM).

NOTE- Match start times may vary depending on previous match schedules.

The Wimbledon women’s singles final will take place on Saturday, where the victors of today’s matches will meet on Centre Court. The exact match time, however, is yet to be determined.

Men’s singles-

Despite injury, the spotlight remains on Sinner. World No. 1, Jannik Sinner, managed to secure victory in his match yesterday against US’s Ben Shelton, securing all three sets (7-6, 6-4, 6-4). The victory came despite an elbow injury he had sustained earlier in the tournament.

The Serb makes history. World No. 6, Novak Djokovic, defeated Italy’s Flavio Cobolli with a score of (6-7, 6-2, 7-5, 6-4) in yesterday’s match. In doing so, Djokovic becomes the player with the most Wimbledon semi-final appearances in men’s singles in history. The seven-time champion can only hope that the fall he suffered during the final minutes of yesterday’s match will not impact his upcoming encounter with Sinner.

Old school vs. new. The world No. 1 has triumphed over Djokovic in their last four encounters, with the most recent being their semi-final match at Roland Garros. Djokovic has his work cut out for him as he faces off against Sinner once more — who’s potentially on his way to achieving a new record if he secures his eighth championship victory.

Tomorrow’s semi-final matches:

  • Jannik Sinner (1) vs. Novak Djokovic (6) (Time TBD).
  • Carlos Alcaraz (2) vs. Taylor Fritz (5) (Time TBD).
