WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Fresh details on our state enterprise shakeup

Hello folks, and happy Monday. We have a brisk issue for you this morning, so without further ado, let’s jump into it.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

Fresh details on state enterprises’ move to the SFE: The first phase of the Madbouly government’s plan to transfer all public enterprises to the Sovereign Fund of Egypt (SFE) will see some 370 firms out of an estimated 709 brought under the fund’s umbrella, a senior government source told EnterpriseAM, citing a recent tally of state firms. The SFE is currently looking into the companies’ ownership structures as it prepares to select the top performers for the strategy’s first phase.

The first phase will target firms that were profitable in FY 2024-25 and have simple ownership structures — avoiding the many companies whose ownership is tangled between government agencies and banks, or whose assets are tied up in complex arrangements. The fund may hold off on selecting the companies until the end of the current fiscal year, our source noted, to confirm the firms’ profitability and account for the full impact of the EGP float on their finances.

Manufacturers and real estate firms top the agenda: The SFE will start by taking over administration of state-owned industrial players, with a particular focus on primary manufacturers that support other industries, given that their production capabilities can be leveraged to attract investments needed in the strategy’s early stages, our source explained. Real estate companies will take second priority after industry.

Further down the line: The 138 state-owned companies operating at a loss will be targeted in a later stage that might involve repurposing their assets or changing their line of business, the source said, adding that the studies needed to establish how this process will take place will take time.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

It’s a light newsday for the int’l presses, with headlines continuing to be dominated by the Russia-Ukraine war and last night’s Oscars.

French President Emmanuel Macron has presented a supposedly joint British-French proposal for a one-month ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine that would halt all air, sea, and energy infrastructure attacks but not on-ground fighting, Reuters reports. The proposal — which would see European troops deployed to Ukraine in a later, second phase — follows a meeting between European leaders yesterday in London aimed at crafting a ceasefire proposal to present to the US. The move comes after a tense and acrimonious meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and US President Donald Trump in Washington on Friday that saw Trump refuse to offer the Ukrainian president requested security guarantees.

The UK, for its part, has distanced itself from the proposal, with UK Armed Forces Minister Luke Pollard saying, “That's not a plan that we currently recognize,” according to the newswire. "Certainly there are a number of different options being discussed privately between the UK, France and our allies at the moment,” Pollard reportedly told the BBC. “It's probably not right for me … to comment on each individual option as they occur.”

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

A night for the books

The 97th Academy Awards have come and gone, and Hollywood’s biggest night did not disappoint. Audiences both present at the Dolby Theatre and tuning in from home were abuzz with excitement and armed with expectations. While some pictures made history, others continued to reign over specific categories.

BEST PICTURE: One of the biggest stories of the night was the one we all least expected — Anora swept the categories, walking away with five Oscars. Sean Baker’s dramedy about an enterprising adult trade worker who impulsively marries the spoiled son of a Russian oligarch had Hollywood’s attention from the get-go. It took home the night’s biggest prize, as well as others including Best Film Editing, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.

BEST ACTRESS: Mikey Madison’s performance in Anora was nothing short of mesmerizing, and the Academy agreed. Her portrayal of a woman navigating love, power and survival in the most unexpected circumstances earned her coveted statuette. She managed to snag the awards from other nominees stacked with talent, among whom were Cynthia Erivo for Wicked and Demi Moore for The Substance.

BEST ACTOR: Adrien Brody took home the statuette for his work in The Brutalist, which earned its own time in the spotlight of controversy in its use of AI to enhance Brody’s Hungarian accent. The film also clinched Best Original Score and Best Cinematography.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Now this was one for the history books, Zoe Saldaña took home the award for her role in Emilia Pérez, making her the first American of Dominican descent to win an Oscar. A long overdue recognition for an actress who has consistently been the unsung queen of franchise blockbusters — Avatar, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Star Trek. In the Netflix drama, she plays Rita Mora Castro, a lawyer helping a cartel boss through the emotional journey of starting a new life as a woman.

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS AND SOUND: The Dune: Part Two team can add even more trophies to their already crowded mantle. The film’s jaw dropping visuals and immersive sound design ensured it swept both Best Visual Effects and Best Sound.

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY: In a category packed with literary heavyweights, Conclave emerged victorious. Adapted from Robert Harris’ 2016 novel, the film is less of a ‘whodunit’ and more of a who's next, taking on the political maneuvering behind the selection of a new pope. The timing couldn’t be more bittersweet, with talks of replacing Pope Francis are in motion.

BEST COSTUME AND PRODUCTION DESIGN: Fantasy lovers rejoice, Wicked didn't go home empty handed, snagging Oscars for both Costume Design and Production Design — where the beloved musical’s transition to the big screen paid off in terms of visual splendor.

BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE FILM: In one of the night’s most powerful moments, NoOther Land took home the Oscar. This wasn't just one of the most powerful documentaries of the year, it was also one of the most captivating real life narratives both on and off screen. What made the victory so powerful was the viewers’ immersion in the struggle and suffering of Masafer Yatta, a Palestinian community in the occupied West Bank, facing destruction as the military moves in to turn it into training grounds. Given the geopolitical landscape, this victory resonated beyond the Academy stage — it was a statement and a conversation starter, especially when there were no distributors who would pick up the film to showcase online and in theatres, participating in a broader systemic trend of avoiding hot topic documentaries.

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT

Prepare for the ups and downs of marriage with ‘Oqbal ‘Andoko

? The newlyweds-to-be are getting cold feet. ‘Oqbal Andoko follows Hamza (Hassan El Raddad) and Safa (Amy Samir Ghanem), a couple who are a week away from their wedding. Hamza is a practicing lawyer and Safa is an aspiring actress (who doesn’t seem to be doing so well).

Caught in the pre-wedding nerves, the couple tell each other anecdotes about other married couples as ways of highlighting their wants or fears in marriage. As you’d expect — if only from the actors involved — these are a series of comedic, theatrical skits with over-the-top characters.

We can’t decide how we feel about it. While the episodes are entertaining, we couldn’t get into it. There’s something about the exaggerated facial expressions and over-the-top silliness that makes the show almost grating to watch. But then again, it is a sit-com series that shouldn't be taken seriously. If you’re looking for a light-hearted, easy-to-watch show that doesn’t take itself seriously, this is a fine choice.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can watch the series on Watch It or catch the trailer on Youtube (runtime: 0:46).

EAT THIS TONIGHT

A top-tier choice for your post-iftar dessert

? If you’re scouting this year’s latest innovative desserts like we are, you may have seen Breadfast’s date baklava pudding. This sweet concoction features crispy goulash, medjool dates, and whole almonds all mixed into a creamy custard-like pudding. The dessert is topped with rolls of baklava that serve as both garnish and an addition of crunch into each serving. We just wish the crunchy layers could have been prepared in a way that allowed for seamless serving.

Taste Test: This dessert strikes the perfect balance — just sweet enough to satisfy, but not too cloying. The pudding acts as the vessel for all the other ingredients, which allows all the flavors to shine without being uncomfortably sweet. The dates were the star of the show — their hint of caramelized depth and soft texture perfectly complemented the crunchy baklava.

PRO TIP: As you all know, when it comes to Ramadan desserts, the early bird gets the worm. Make sure to place your order early in the morning, because they tend to sell out quickly.

WHERE TO FIND IT- You can find the date baklava pudding on Breadfast.
