WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Gov’t mulling transferring all state-owned enterprises to Sovereign Fund of Egypt

Good afternoon folks, and happy Wednesday. We’ve got another busy issue for you today, with the main highlight news about big changes that may be coming to the administration of state-owned enterprises.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

#1- All state-owned companies could be under SFE? The Madbouly government is aiming to transfer administration of all state-owned companies to the Sovereign Fund of Egypt (SFE) in order to boost their returns, Reuters reports, citing Investment Minister Hassan El Khatib.

You heard right — all of them: “I want to move the state-owned enterprises in batches to the [sovereign wealth] fund to manage, to maximize the return on, say, state assets,” El Khatib said at the Investopia 2025 conference in Abu Dhabi today.

The plan: SFE’s role will focus on restructuring state-owned companies, attracting private players, and potentially going public. “I see we have a lot of good companies. As we move them, get the private sector to run them, have the proper governance, partner with the private sector, list in some cases,” El Khatib said, “the perception of the [SFE] will be maximization of yield on the return value and the valuation.”

#2- Social protection package details incoming? President Abdel Fattah El Sisi met with Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly and Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk today to review the long-awaited social protection packages that the government has completed preparing, according to an Ittihadiya statement. Madbouly is likely to unveil the details of the package at his weekly press conference today. The minimum wage, tax thresholds, social protection coverage, and pensions are set to come into effect in July, while an additional package of one-time allowances and an expansion to the Takaful and Karama program could come into effect in March, the statement noted, confirming what EnterpriseAM reported earlier today.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

With int’l headlines still digesting news of a US-Ukraine mineral deal and US president Donald Trump’s new “gold card” visa and possible copper tariffs, a couple stories are catching our eye.

Russia, US move toward follow-up talks after high-level meeting: Russia and the US are preparing for expert-level discussions following last week’s high-level meeting and an earlier call between Trump and Russian president Vladimir Putin, Reuters reports. While the meetings could involve an in-person meeting between Putin and Trump, Putin has recently provided indications that he would like to slow down progress toward ending the Russia-Ukraine war and engage in more gradual confidence-building measures with the US.

Elsewhere, South Korea has seen its first birthrate increase in nine years, with expanded government policies to support parents being pinpointed as a key contributing factor.

** CATCH UP QUICK on the top stories from today’s EnterpriseAM:

  • More tax relief measures near implementation: The Finance Ministry is set to reduce penalties for late tax payments by up to 90% as part of its larger tax relief package, in a move that aims to resolve thousands of disputes resulting from delayed tax return submissions or filing returns without paying the due tax.
  • Turkey’s Eroglu is setting up a USD 120 mn garment factory in Qantara West: Eroglu Garment — a subsidiary of Turkish clothing manufacturer Eroglu Holding — is investing some USD 120 mn in a new integrated garment factory in the Qantara West Industrial Zone.
  • A gov’t delegation is negotiating the removal of restrictions on Egyptian goods in Moroccan ports: The government sent a high-level delegation to Rabat earlier this week to push for the removal of recent restrictions that have left Egyptian exports piling in Morocco’s ports for two weeks.

☀️ TOMORROW’S WEATHER- The capital is getting plenty of sunshine tomorrow with the mercury set to rise to a warm high of 22°C before dropping to a cooler low of 11°C in the evening, according to our favorite weather app.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Reading the coffee grounds

Coffee might be seeing bitter days ahead: Coffee futures — which index the price paid for advance purchases of coffee — are reaching unprecedented highs, raising concerns about the affordability and availability of our favorite caffeine fix in the coming months and years, Business Insider writes. With prices skyrocketing, coffee lovers may be facing higher costs and potential changes in quality, as coffee growers grapple with the destructive impact of climate change.

What’s driving the trend? Coffee is the world’s second-most-traded commodity after oil — and as such, coffee prices often reflect market trends early. Traders purchase shipments months or years in advance, making futures a key indicator of consumer costs down the line. Since the pandemic, coffee futures have steadily risen alongside inflation, with store-bought prices in the US following suit since 2022. Price increases from major brands like Folgers, J.M. Smucker, Maxwell House, and Nestlé haven’t yet deterred demand, though a projected 25% price rise in the coming months could provide another test of how addicted we really are.

Aside from the price changes, expect “flavorflation”: Companies could mix lower quality robusta beans — which have also seen price increases — into blends while maintaining premium branding. In Indonesia, some cafes have started blending coffee with corn and rice to extend supply. Small roasters in particular are feeling the squeeze, with many facing pressure to compromise on quality or price despite commitments to high-quality sourcing and fair trade. Specialty coffee already costs more than that of mass market brands, with rising costs possibly forcing roasters to use lower-rated beans.

Blame mother nature: The past two years have been the hottest on record, bringing on intense droughts, scorching heat, coffee plant diseases, and unstable supply chains. Severe droughts in Brazil and Vietnam have devastated harvests, while low water levels in the Panama Canal have disrupted shipping. Brazil, the largest global supplier of high-quality arabica beans, saw its worst drought in 2023, leading to another poor harvest.

More trouble is brewing: Experts warn that supply issues may persist over the next two decades with poor harvests becoming more common and wild arabica at risk of becoming endangered. Projections indicate that coffee farmland may shrink by half, potentially turning the drink into a luxury item rather than a daily staple.

Will coffee survive? Coffee lovers the world over have reason to be concerned. It’s hard to see how harsher, hotter summers and more frequent droughts are going to be reversed without swift action to lower carbon emissions, something world leaders continue to fail to commit to. So savor that cup of joe while you can — because it’s coming with a higher price tag and may not always be there.

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT

Two men outsmart a racist system

? This movie deserves more recognition. Set in the 1960s, The Banker follows Bernard Garret (Anthony Mackie) and Joe Morris (Samuel L. Jackson), two black businessmen who manage to break into the real estate and banking industries — two fields that weren’t exactly welcoming to Black people at the time. How? They hired a white man (Nicholas Hoult) to pose as the face of the business, while they secretly ran the show.

Part history lesson, part heist. Garret and Morris outsmart the system designed to keep them out and use the very rules of capitalism to help Black communities gain financial independence — an incredibly satisfying watch for the viewer. The film balances drama with moments of humor, as one can only expect from Samuel L. Jackson.

Despite racism being the main theme, the creators end up playing it a bit safe. While they do highlight social inequalities, they often smooth over some of the harsher realities, seemingly in order to appeal to a mainstream audience.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can watch the movie on Apple TV+ or catch the trailer on YouTube (runtime: 2:30).

EAT THIS TONIGHT

Mahshi gets a boxed upgrade

? If it can be rolled, wrapped, or packed with rice, Dolma is making it. With heavy Levantine influences, this cloud kitchen takes its name seriously, serving up an array of stuffed vine leaves, cabbage, and onions alongside heartier dishes like musakhan, shawarma, and fatteh. Given that their menu is built for sharing — most items come in portions of 10 to 20 — we went for the Mix Box, a sampler that includes a little of everything except the fattah.

Let’s start with the dolmas. The stuffed vine leaves leaned towards yalengi territory — herbaceous, slightly sweet, and more olive oil-heavy than the usual citrusy, tangy vine leaves. If you prefer the Turkish-Greek style of stuffed vine leaves, you’ll probably enjoy these, but for those expecting the sharper, punchier Levantine version, they might come off a little mild. The stuffed cabbage rolls had a softer, more delicate texture, with a subtle sweetness that contrasted nicely with the more savory components of the box. The real standout? The stuffed onions. Deeply caramelized with an almost smoky, spiced warmth, they were easily the best option in the dolma lineup, full of layered flavors.

Moving on to the musakhan rolls: These inventive rolls comprised sumac-seasoned shredded chicken wrapped in soft but not soggy saj bread, almost like a spring roll. The flavors were spot on, with the right hit of acidity and a touch of olive oil — though we’d recommend heating them up for the full effect. As for the shawarma, the chicken was the real winner — juicy, well marinated, seasoned with sumac, and packed with flavor. The beef, while still good, didn’t quite reach the same level. It had a decent spice blend and some richness, but it tasted like Egyptian beef shawarma.

As for the sauces, they brought some much-needed contrast. The garlicky toum was light and airy, delivering that perfect hit of sharpness without being overpowering. The tahini-based sauce was creamy and nutty, pairing especially well with the shawarma. And then there was the yogurt mix, which had a mild tang but didn’t stand out as much as the other two.

Though the Mix Box didn’t include Dolma’s fatteh options, they offer two versions: chicken and eggplant. Given the Levantine approach of the menu, the eggplant version is layered with crispy bread, velvety eggplant, tangy yogurt, and nuts — a classic combination that works when done right. The chicken version, on the other hand, should deliver something closer to musakhan flavors, but in a layered, texturally rich format.

So, is Dolma worth it? If you’re after homestyle stuffed dishes without the effort of rolling them yourself, it’s a solid option through Talabat and their phone number — though they only deliver to New Cairo. The portions are generous, the flavors are warm and familiar, and while some elements could use a bit of tweaking — more lemon in the vine leaves, for instance — the overall experience is satisfying and gets the job done.
