WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Egypt’s PMI reading for December sees output fall at fastest clip in eight months

Good afternoon folks, and happy Monday. While the weather might be getting chillier, the new year’s presses are just starting to heat up.

Merry Christmas to everyone celebrating tomorrow: Don’t forget that the whole country is off tomorrow in observance of Coptic Christmas.

That means us, too: EnterprisePM will be off tomorrow and we will be back in your inboxes at our customary time on Wednesday afternoon.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

Non-oil private sector activity contracts in December off the back of a weakening EGP: Egypt’s non-oil private sector activity in December fell to 48.1 from 49.2 last month, marking sector activity’s fourth consecutive month of contraction, with output contracting at its fastest clip in eight months, according to S&P Global’s latest Purchasing Manager’s Index (PMI) report (pdf). Driving the decline were rising prices amid a weakening EGP against the USD, which saw demand and new order volumes fall, particularly in the construction and wholesale & retail sectors. Firms sought to protect order volumes by cutting margins, contributing to a boost in sentiment up from November’s all-time low.

It’s not all roses for the Egyptian private sector in 2025: “The latest Egypt PMI data showed that the non-oil private sector’s anticipated recovery is unlikely to be without its setbacks in 2025,” said senior economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence David Owen. Looking toward the coming months, Owen noted that “exchange rate movements could be a decisive factor in how output and profits fare in the coming months.”

PLUS- FRA lowers age for trading in securities to 15: The Financial Regulatory Authority (FRA) has greenlit an amendment that will lower the age at which individuals can trade in EGX-listed securities to 15, down from 16 currently, the authority announced in a statement. Individuals between 15 and 21 will also now be able to hold a portfolio worth up to EGP 40k, up from EGP 10k currently.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

Splashed across today’s international headlines is news that Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau is likely to step down as head of Canada’s Liberal Party after nine years in office. The resignation, which is expected to be announced before a meeting of Liberal Party members on Wednesday, comes as the party faces down a series of bleak polls that see the opposition Conservative Party trouncing the Liberals in elections that must be held by late October. It’s as yet unclear whether Trudeau will continue in his post as PM if he opts to resign as head of his party. (Reuters | Bloomberg)

Chinese regulators are stepping in to arrest a slide in Chinese equities and the country’s exchange rate, after mainland China’s benchmark CSI 300 index declined 4.1% in the first three trading days of the new year — the worst performance among all of Asia’s blue-chip stock indices. China’s central bank assured investors that it would guard against any exchange rate overshooting as the CNY dropped to a 15-month low against the USD, while the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges have reportedly asked several large mutual funds to limit stock selloffs until the market stabilizes. FOR YOUR COMMUTE

A new frontier in understanding human behavior

How long does it take to clone a person’s whole personality? Just two hours according to a new study conducted by researchers from Google and Stanford University. The conducted experiment introduces ‘simulation agents,’ AI replicas of individuals that can mimic human behavior with an accuracy of 85% after a two-hour-long conversation.

How did it work? The researchers interviewed around 1k participants for two hours each, listening to personal stories, values, and opinions on societal issues. These conversations were used to train a generative AI model tailored to each of these individuals. The AI replicas were then tested against their human counterparts using personality tests, social surveys, and games.

The result? While the responses aligned with human results in tests that measured social attitudes and behaviors like the General Social Survey and the Big Five Inventory, the accuracy dipped in tasks that needed nuanced social situations — such as economic decision making in games that requires an acute understanding of social dynamics and contextual nuance like The Trust Game.

It has a lot of potential in different fields. If used on a governmental level, the technology could be used to predict how people might react to new policies, helping test ideas in a safe, controlled environment. Marketers could use them to understand consumer reactions to certain products in order to create better strategies. Study author Joon Sung Park believes that the future of this technology is to have “a bunch of small ‘yous’ running around and actually making the decisions that you would have made.”

As always said before, all good tech comes with risks — especially when it comes to AI. The researchers acknowledge that simulation agents could be misused, such as has been the case with deepfakes, which have resulted in scams, manipulation, and impersonation.

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT

Kicking tradition to the curb

? Polite Society, a fun and bold film that takes on tradition and rebellion. This thrilling martial arts comedy brings a fresh twist of Bollywood flair that comes from the creator of We Are Lady Parts. The film offers a mix of humor, action, and a sharp critique of patriarchal norms — all while keeping you hooked with its high-energy, stylish sequences.

What’s the premise? Ria (Priya Kansara), a high schooler with big dreams of becoming a stuntwoman, tries to fight back against the constraints of tradition. Her sister, Lena (Ritu Arya), is stuck in an arranged marriage to the wealthy Salim (Akshay Khanna), and Ria’s determination to save her sparks an adventure.

It’s energetic, fun, and cleverly paced. The action sequences, though not always perfect, offer a playful mix of Bollywood dance and cartoon-ish slapstick. But it’s the heart of the film that really shines — the power of sisterhood, independence, and a woman’s right to choose her own destiny.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can watch the film on OSN+ or watch the trailer on YouTube (runtime:2:37).

From wraps to bowls to guilt-free desserts, Kouzine caters to every craving, with the added bonus of calorie-counted options perfect for anyone on a diet or mindful of their intake.

We crafted our own custom bowl — part of their choose-your-own-way option — with brown rice as a base, and topped it with grilled white fish and shrimp, diced onions, fresh rocca leaves, and corn. The combo was both filling and fresh, with the seafood a standout. The Kouzine special sauce added a unique twist to the dish, perfectly complementing the seafood and veggies. It was a well-balanced bowl that ticked all the boxes for health and taste.

For dessert, we couldn’t resist trying their mini pancakes: Eight soft, bite-sized pancakes topped with a healthy chocolate spread, banana slices, and fresh strawberries. It’s the perfect sweet fix without the guilt.

To round off the meal, we tried their Tropical Energy Fuel smoothie, made with pineapple, mango, coconut water, and banana. Essentially a healthy take on a piña colada, this smoothie was refreshing and naturally sweet.

Kouzine hits the sweet spot between nutritious and delicious. You can find them on Talabat where they deliver to New Cairo residents — since that's where they’re based.
