WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Your mobile and internet bills could be going up as much as 30%

Good afternoon all you wonderful people, and happy Christmas Eve. At the top of the docket for today is another hike to our phone and internet bills, followed by the latest on AI applications in the realm of animal communication and the business of prediction.

THE BIG STORIES TODAY

#1- Your mobile contract plans just got pricier: The National Telecom Regulatory Authority has given telecom operators the greenlight to hike prices of their mobile and internet bills by up to 30%, a government source told EnterpriseAM. The move comes a little over two weeks after Telecom Egypt (WE) and Egypt’s other three other telecom operators hiked the prices of their home internet and prepaid mobile plans by up to 31%.

#2- Valu and One Finance close fresh securitization rounds: Homegrown fintech leader Valu has closed its thirteenth securitization round valued at EGP 519.2 mn, according to statements from Valu and Legal advisor Dreny & Partners. Valu’s latest financing round is part of a broader three-year multi-issuance program with a total value of EGP 16 bn, with the company having raised a total in excess of EGP 10.8 bn across all issuances to date. Meanwhile, state-owned consumer finance player One Finance has closed its second securitization for its consumer finance portfolio in an issuance valued at EGP 679 mn, as part of its total EGP 3 bn multi-issuance program, according to a statement from legal advisor Dreny & Partners.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

China to issue record USD 411 bn in t-bills in 2025 to revive sluggish economy: China is planning to issue USD 411 bn worth of special treasury bonds in 2025, its largest-ever issuance, two unnamed sources tell Reuters. Proceeds from the issuances will go toward ramped-up subsidy programs, equipment upgrades for businesses, greater funding for advanced manufacturing sectors like EVs and semiconductors, and expanded infrastructure projects.

The unprecedented move reflects Beijing’s willingness to go further into debt to counter continued deflationary pressures, particularly as it struggles with continued weak consumer demand amid falling property prices that have left Chinese consumers feeling less wealthy and less willing to spend. The need to prop up domestic demand has taken on an even greater salience as US president-elect Donald Trump’s promised tariffs on Chinese goods threaten to hit Chinese export demand hard.

PLUS- Israeli defense minister acknowledges assassination of Ismail Haniyeh: Israeli defense minister Israel Katz confirmed that his government was behind the killing of Hamas’ top political leader in Tehran in July. While Israel had largely been understood to have been behind Haniyeh’s killing, Katz’s comments provided the first official acknowledgment of the government’s responsibility for the assassination.

** CATCH UP QUICK on the top stories from today’s EnterpriseAM:

  • Fresh details are out on the government’s new tax system: The Madbouly government is gearing up to launch its long-awaited tax policy document next year, as part of a wider package of measures aimed at attracting foreign investments and changing the overall investment climate in Egypt.
  • Turkish denim manufacturer to invest USD 8.8 mn in SCZone: The Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) signed an agreement yesterday with Turkish apparel company Denim Rise to establish a garment manufacturing facility in the Qantara West Industrial Zone.
  • EBRD greenlights USD 275 mn loan for Gulf of Suez mega wind farm: The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) approved a USD 275 mn syndicated loan to Saudi renewables giant ACWA Power and Hassan Allam Utilities’ 1.1 GW wind farm in the Gulf of Suez — the largest wind project in both Africa and the Middle East.

☀️ TOMORROW’S WEATHER- This week’s weather is fairly stable with tomorrow’s mercury expected to reach a high of 22°C in the capital and a low of 10°C at night, according to our favorite weather app.

Advances in AI could hold the key to decoding animal communication

Could AI help us unlock the secrets of animal communication? Animal communication has been a longstanding fascination of humans — just take a look at the hype around Jane Goodall’s years spent studying chimps communication, or all the hit movies featuring talking house pets (Garfield, we’re looking at you). But what if we could really decode their vocalizations? As it turns out, 2025 could be the year that we learn what Fido and Lassie are trying to tell us, as artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies are brought into the mix, Wired reports.

Advances in tech are offering researchers access to ever-larger pools of vocalization data: Researchers now have access to durable and advanced audio recording technologies — like AudioMoth — that capture a wide range of sounds at relatively low costs, allowing them to leave recorders in the field 24/7 and capture everything from gibbon calls to birdsong. The result? Massive datasets that were once impossible to obtain, store, and manage are now more widely available than ever.

Once these datasets are in hand, researchers can apply deep learning techniques to uncover hidden structures in the vocalizations. The goal is to identify patterns that might resemble human language or represent other forms of communication. However, unlike human language — where meanings and syntax are relatively well-defined — animal vocalizations often lack clear equivalents to words or grammatical structures. AI technologies like large language models (LLMs) and neural networks offer a powerful tool for quickly combing through data in search of these deeper structures.

So why do we care? Decoding animal language offers scientists the opportunity to investigate animals’ self-awareness, with potential implications for how we treat and relate to all animal life, Nature writes. Earlier this year, two studies utilizing AI-based tools found evidence that African elephants and marmoset monkeys give each other distinct names in much the same way humans do — which could indicate that they think of themselves as individuals, just like us.

Research on animal language also helps us understand the social lives of animals — which sometimes is not so different from ours. Research on whale echolocation has already shown surprising parallels between whale life and ours, with researchers discovering that groups of whales — dubbed “clans” — communicate in their own dialects, marking what researcher Shane Gero calls “cultural boundaries” between whale groups.

TL;DR: On balance, new applications of AI technology signal that rapid advances in understanding animal communication could be just around the corner. In addition to scratching our human itch to understand our world, this development could have positive knock-on effects for the animal kingdom — assuming that humans will have more empathy for animals once they realize they have minds of their own.

An atmospheric thriller with a dark premise

? Uncovering secrets beneath the surface of memory and identity: New psychological thriller Surface is a fascinating dive into the mystery behind a woman who survives a suicide attempt — but can’t remember the reasons behind her drastic decision.

A fresh take on AI’s predictive abilities

? A fresh look at how AI is changing our lives. Prediction Machines: The Simple Economics of Artificial Intelligence by economists Ajay Agrawal, Joshua Gans, and Avi Goldfarb, focuses on AI’s biggest strength: prediction. This book highlights how AI isn’t about creating the same intelligence that humans have, but rather about predicting outcomes based on data — and how this is becoming a lot faster and cheaper to achieve.

AI excels at using the information it has and using it to make sense of the information it doesn’t have. Because of this, AI tools offer businesses the opportunity to better predict risk, demand, and customer behavior — part of the reason so many industries are interested in possible applications of the tech.

This isn’t a “technology will take over the world” book. Throughout its pages, the authors highlight how AI prediction is just one step in the decision-making process. Human judgment still remains critical, especially with regard to tasks that require creativity and emotional intelligence.

A rosier view of AI-human relations: Contrary to other accounts that stress AI’s potential to replace human decision-making, the book’s authors argue that AI’s advance is not a zero-sum game. Rather than being in competition, the authors suggest that AI and humans should be working together to generate exciting new outcomes.

You can find this book at Diwan.
