WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Honda and Nissan begin talks on merger as auto sector competition heats up

Good afternoon folks, and happy Monday. The news cycle may be winding down for this calendar year, but our coverage of the latest in tech certainly is not — read on for a breakdown of Google’s new tracking tools, Amazon’s new discount goods platform, and another season of our favorite fictional gaming series.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

Banking consortium grants El Zahy Group EGP 4.2 bn in financing: A consortium composed of the National Bank of Egypt (NBE), Banque Misr, and QNB Al Ahli will jointly grant local firm El Zahy Group some EGP 4.2 bn in financing for a number of infrastructure and construction projects, according to a press release (pdf). The funding will go toward projects in the facility design, land reclamation, infrastructure, agricultural land, and irrigation and drainage line construction areas.

AND- WiFi calls could go live before the year wraps up: WiFi calling services — which enable mobile phone users to make high-quality voice calls over internet connections, rather than via mobile networks — could launch within days, as the National Telecom Regulatory Authority finalizes approvals, sources told Al Borsa. The service aims to fix coverage gaps in dense neighborhoods and high rises and is expected to work on 4G devices with support from mobile carriers.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

Honda and Nissan could be on the verge of a historic merger: Japanese auto titans Nissan and Honda have begun talks over a possible merger, which if implemented would create the world’s third largest automaker by sales volume, the companies said in a joint press release this morning. Mitsubishi, another Japanese carmaker that has been in alliance with Nissan since 2016, is also mulling joining the merger, the Financial Times reports.

A highly competitive market is spurring sector consolidation: The merger talks come as the companies face heightened competition from China- and US-based EV automakers, and as Nissan faces financial difficulties that have seen other manufacturers — chiefly Taiwan’s Foxconn — eye a takeover of the embattled car-maker. Integration could provide a salve for Nissan’s financial difficulties, while also offering both companies an opportunity to capitalize on economies of scale amid what Honda chief executive Toshihiro Mibe called a “drastically changing business environment.” If implemented, the merger will be the biggest reshaping of the auto market since Fiat-Chrysler and PSA merged to create Stellantis in 2021.

  • Unionaire to up investments 67% y-o-y in 2025: Unionaire Group Technology is planning to invest USD 500 mn in the local market next year, up from USD 300 mn this year.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Google’s new platform policies could pose a threat to user privacy

Google is loosening the rules on tracking your digital fingerprint: Google is set to provide advertisers with more flexible restrictions and personalized ad targeting effective 16 February, in the name of innovations that supposedly make personalized ad tracking safer for individual users, the company stated in its updated platform programs policies.

The rationale: Google is branding its new move as a step forward for digital advertisers and users alike, with the new policies incorporating innovations in privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs) like on-device processing, Trusted Execution Environments (TTEs), and secure multi-party computation. The company argues that these new technologies offer greater protections for individuals while simultaneously expanding advertisers’ scope for collecting data across a larger set of devices, including smart TVs and gaming consoles.

Critics, however, are ringing the alarm bell about the measures’ invasive new data tracking tools. Digital fingerprinting, the data collection process that Google will start using to track user data across devices, digests all of your online signals in such a way that allows unique users or devices to be identified virtually in perpetuity — even if you clear your browsing history and site data. In comparison to other data collection tools like Chrome’s third-party cookies — which Google was considering nixing before pulling back from the decision in July — digital fingerprinting is more difficult to spot and less easy to consent to than cookies.

Regulators warn that Google’s move could presage a shift away from cookies and toward digital fingerprinting — with potentially harmful results for user privacy. Head of regulatory risk at the UK government’s data and privacy regulator Stephen Almond described Google’s move as “irresponsible,” adding that “the ICO’s view is that fingerprinting is not a fair means of tracking users online because it is likely to reduce people’s choice and control over how their information is collected.” He also noted that Google itself has previously acknowledged the deleterious privacy implications of the technology, quoting a 2019 statement from the company asserting that “We think this subverts user choice and is wrong.”

The timing of the move — which comes as Google faces an antitrust ruling that could divest it of Chrome — seems more than a little coincidental. For one, the collection of tracking data across a wider range of devices could see Chrome shift from its place at the epicenter of Google’s tracking universe to one among many sources of ad tracking, Forbes writes. Even if the search and advertising giant manages to hold on to its web browser, the company is facing down a significantly more competitive search and advertising market — with possible implications for Google’s supremacy in online advertising.

Amazon’s new Haul app is now competing for a slice of the Chinese-sourced goods market. Right before Black Friday, Amazon added a section called Haul to its mobile app, featuring ultra low-priced items that are sourced and shipped from China. This new app appears to be Amazon’s answer to the booming popularity of apps like Temu and Shein, CNBC writes.

From sneakers to kitchenware to phone cases, Haul’s product range includes a little bit of everything. Unlike its competitors, Haul offers all of its products for under USD 20, and also offers free shipping alongside discounts that increase as your total increases, encouraging customers to purchase several pieces in one order.

It’s a trade-off. By shopping from Haul, customers are choosing price over delivery speed. Unlike the one or two days it takes for an Amazon Prime order to arrive, Haul orders may take as much as two weeks — which may be fine by consumers, considering Temu’s success as the most-downloaded free app for two years in a row, despite similar shipping times.

Amazon has made Haul completely separate from its main site. “There’s a logic in doing that,” Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail, told CNBC. “They don’t want consumers to trade down to lower-priced goods.” As it stands, it seems that Haul and Amazon are expected to serve their own individual purposes — rather than compete over Amazon’s existing customer base.

Haul is entering a fast-growing market. Despite the public backlash against these platforms’ business model and the labor practices of Chinese manufacturers, Chinese goods are seeing significant sales growth through platforms like Temu, Alibaba, Shein, and more recently, TikTok shop. “Consumers don’t put their money where their mouth is. They say they don’t like the consequences of cheap products, but yet they still go and buy them in droves,” Saunders said.

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT

Mythic Quest’s gaming gang is back

? A TV show that takes on the gaming industry one console at a time: Mythic Quest is a comedy series that takes us behind the scenes of a fictional video game studio — bringing to life the pressures and absurdities of creating a hit game. Each episode explores the workplace dilemmas and office politics that arise when you try to balance art and business.

A quick refresher: The series — currently in its third season — revolves around the team behind Mythic Quest, a fictional multiplayer online role-playing game. Ian Grimm (Rob McElhenney), the creative director, is focused on the challenges of maintaining his game's success, while his brilliant but often underappreciated right-hand woman, Poppy Li (Charlotte Nicdao), reckons with her own frustrations and ambitions. Throughout the show, we watch their complex and funny dynamic evolve as they tackle everything from creative differences to personal growth. The studio is filled with a diverse team, including a cynical writer, an eccentric programmer, and the rest of the chaotic office’s staff.

The third season sees some members of the group transition to new projects, with Ian and Poppy stepping away from Mythic Quest to launch their own gaming studio, Grimpop. Meanwhile, Rachel (Ashly Burch) and Dana (Imani Hakim) pursue their own passions, storytelling and game development. As for the original Mythic Quest team, it’s down to David (David Hornsby), Jo (Jesse Ennis), and Carol (Naomi Ekperigin), still stuck at the headquarters, to ensure Myth Quest’s success in the chaotic world of gaming.

Despite the physical separation of some of its main characters, Mythic Quest continues to thrive on its signature mix of corporate satire and character-driven humor. The dynamics between the characters still form the heart of the show. Ian and Poppy’s relationship offers both comedic conflict and a lot of room for growth as they face the pressures of building something new from the ground-up. Rachel and Dana’s long-distance relationship adds a new emotional layer, showing that Mythic Quest isn’t afraid to take its characters into uncharted territory — away from the office drama but still dealing with the messiness of their personal and professional lives.

Season 3 is a smart, funny, and engaging shift in the show’s path, allowing it to continue to captivate audiences with its sharp humor and exploration of growth in the face of personal and professional struggles. If you're a fan of workplace comedies that mix humor with insightful commentary, this season proves that Mythic Quest still reigns supreme — just make sure to binge it before the release of Season 4 on 29 January.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can watch Season 3 on Apple TV+ or sneak peek at the trailer on YouTube (runtime: 1:56).
