ECONOMY-

Fitch Solutions’ research unit BMI now expects the Egyptian economy to grow 5.1% in FY 2025-2026, up 0.4 percent points from its previous 4.7% projection. The decision was supported by an expected improvement in Red Sea navigation, an uptick in the services sector on the back of calming geopolitical risks, and lower borrowing costs pushing up investment.

WHAT’S HAPPENING NEXT WEEK-

The Central Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee will meet next Thursday to review rates. Despite the country’s most recent inflation data showing price rises falling to a nearly two-year low, most analysts are still confident that the central bank will keep rates steady for a sixth consecutive meeting.

Check out our full calendar on the web for a comprehensive listing of upcoming news events, national holidays and news triggers.

AROUND THE WORLD IN SEVEN DAYS-

Syria once again dominated the conversation throughout the week, with the new post-Assad transitional government reaching out to foreign nations — particularly in the West — to ask for the nation to be brought back in the fold and long-standing economic sanctions dropped. The leader of the main opposition group and by extension de facto leader of the entire country has been at the forefront of these efforts, with Ahmed Al Sharaa — FKA Abu Mohammed Al Joalni — talking to foreign outlets to argue the case that his group Hayat Tahrir Al Sham, which was Al Qaida’s Syrian arm as recently as 2016, has changed and that it should no longer be listed as a terrorist organisation by the UN, EU, US, UK, and others. Some, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken, are hearing Al Sharaa out, with the US ready torecognize the group as Syria’s government if it creates an inclusive government that represents the people of Syria.

Despite Al Sharaa’s assurances that “we do not want any conflict whether with Israel or anyone else,” Israel continued to advance into Syria, further expanding its illegal occupation of the Golan Heights. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government also approved a plan to double the Israeli population in the occupied territory and ordered dozens of strikes up and down the country on Syrian military sites.

It was also a big week for the business press with the Fed’s build up to and eventual vote on interest rate cuts. The US Federal Reserve decided to cut interest rates for the third time in 2024 by 25 bps and analysts are now forecasting that the Fed will cut only twice again next year. The prospect of an uptick in inflation on the back of Trump’s proposed tariffs is also haunting fiscal policy makers, with the country’s path towards reaching its longer term goal of 2% inflation murky at best.

Also getting substantial ink was news that Japan’s Nissan and Honda are in talks over a potential merger, which could help the auto giants stay resilient in the face of increased competition from EV players. The two sides are expected to ink an MoU soon to officially kick off discussions of “partnership-broadening steps, including the details of a potential merger.” The news sent Nissan's shares soaring, rising as much as 24%, while Honda’s shares fell as much as 3.4%.

At the Movies

The heart can love twice

? A wife who encouraged her husband… to marry another woman? Directed by Khaled Marei and written by Ayman Bahgat Kamar, El Hana El Ana Feeh is a comedic drama filled with paradoxes of marriage and the contradictions between reality and social media.

A love coach in crisis: Ahmed (Karim Mahmoud Abdel Aziz) is a relationship expert and social media influencer, but contrary to what he shows his fans, his personal life is full of disagreements with his wife Iman (Yasmine Raees). When Dr. Rami (Hatem Salah), Ahmed's close friend, discovers that Iman has an advanced malignant tumor and her days are numbered, she decides, driven by concern for their daughter, that the solution would be for her husband to marry her close friend Fawzia (Dina El Sherbiny) — who he was coincidentally previously in love with. But she forgets to account for her jealousy.

The dynamic between Yasmine Raees and Dina El Sherbiny is one of the most prominent elements in the movie, but the overall experience was generally disappointing. The comedy is passable, but most of the credit goes to Hatem Salah for his talent in improvisation, and comedic guest appearances by Moataz El Tony, Yasser El Tobgy, and Mohamed Otaka. This is a light watch that does not take itself seriously, and is easily enjoyable if you don’t raise your expectations too high.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can find the movie at VOX Cinemas at City Center Almaza and Mall of Egypt, Cima Arkan, Cairo Festival City, Citystars cinemas, and Point90.

Some tough love about our future

? It’s time for a reality check on climate change and modern civilization. In Howthe World Really Works, Vaclav Smil gives readers a blunt, no-nonsense overview of the forces that shape our world. Smil, a scientist and energy expert, goes into the systems that sustain modern civilization, focusing on topics like energy, food production, and climate change. The book is packed with eye-opening facts, and challenges both optimistic and pessimistic views of how we should tackle the future.

The world is built on fossil fuels. Smil argues that transitioning away from fossil fuels quickly is unrealistic due to their essential role in energy, transportation, and food production, as well as in creating materials like plastic, steel, and cement. He emphasizes that alternatives for mass production are not viable in the near future and stresses the importance of facing these challenges with a clear, realistic view.

The book also touches on globalization and risk perception, before concluding with Smil’s criticism of both extreme optimism about technology as well as apocalyptic climate predictions, advocating for a balanced, practical approach to addressing these issues.

The tone is straightforward and frankly sometimes grumpy, which might not be for everyone, but his arguments are grounded in fact. He pulls no punches when addressing the challenges of climate change and the slow, difficult road ahead. Though the book occasionally drifts into tangents, it provides a clear-eyed, fact-based look at the realities of our complex world and the hurdles we face in addressing climate change.

WHERE TO FIND IT- How the World Really Works is currently sold out at Diwan, but is available on Amazon Egypt, and as an ebook on Amazon US.

Hot and Fresh Out of the Kitchen

Savor the heart of Vietnam at Pho Viet

? Pho Viet embraces Vietnamese home-style cooking. Hidden in Sheraton, this restaurant serves authentic flavors of Vietnam with a side of comfort. Whether you're a seasoned lover of Vietnamese cuisine or a curious first-timer, Pho Viet promises an experience worth savoring.

We started with the beef salad (Goi Bo), a dish that made quite an impression. The thinly sliced, tender beef is marinated in a zesty mix of lime juice and fresh herbs like cilantro and mint. Crisp vegetables, including carrots and cucumbers, added a crunch, while a sprinkle of crushed peanuts provided a nutty finish. Be warned: this dish packs a serious spice kick. If you're a fan of heat, this salad is a must-try.

What’s a Vietnamese restaurant visit in the winter without a steaming bowl of pho? Both the chicken and beef pho were on point in terms of taste, with the rich, flavorful broths that are the essence of traditional Vietnamese cooking. The handmade flat rice noodles added an authentic touch, and the tender slices of beef and chicken were exactly the kind of hearty you need to to last you through the winter. We ordered the smaller bowls to save room for more dishes, and we’d recommend you do the same unless you have a healthy appetite or want to share.

We decided to satisfy some cravings while also stepping into uncharted territory with our mains. The sweet and sour stir-fried chicken (Đậu Xào Chua Ngọt) was exactly as it should be: a perfect balance of sweetness and tanginess. The dish featured tender chicken pieces coated in a glossy sauce made from pineapple juice. The bell peppers and onions added color and crunch, paired with the steamed basmati rice that soaked up the sauce beautifully, making each bite full of flavor.

Our adventurous choice, the duck with orange sauce (Vịt Sốt Cam), turned out to be a revelation. This dish had zesty, tangy, and savory notes, with juicy duck meat glazed in a sauce made from freshly squeezed orange juice, soy sauce, and a hint of ginger. It was as visually appealing as it was delicious. It’s easy to see why this is one of their bestsellers — we couldn’t get enough of it.

No meal is complete without dessert. The fried banana ice cream did not disappoint — crispy, golden fried banana paired with a rich, soothing vanilla ice cream was the perfect finale.

PASS THE CONTROLLER

Whodunnit? It may be you

? In this murder mystery you’re not the detective — you’re the suspects. Loco Motive is an homage to classic murder mystery stories, blending point-and-click gameplay with sharp humor and the beloved 8-bit style of yore.

The game puts you in control of three different protagonists: An ambitious lawyer, a bumbling detective, and an elderly female spy. When a murder occurs aboard the Reuss Express, each character becomes both suspect and investigator, leading to an intriguing web of perspectives as you work to clear their names and find the real killer.

The core gameplay loop involves switching between the protagonists, each with unique abilities that affect how they interact with the environment and other characters. The lawyer can present evidence to force confessions, the detective can examine a crime scene for clues, and the spy can use gadgets to eavesdrop on conversations.

The solutions are sometimes frustratingly obtuse. There are moments when the progress depends on trying every inventory item with every interactive element, which disrupts otherwise smooth gameplay. But its strong writing, memorable characters, and clever use of multiple protagonists make it a worthwhile experience for fans of the genre.

? Rating: 9/10 on Steam.

⌛ Hours of gameplay: ~15 hours.

? Replay value: 5/10.

? Platforms: Steam for PC, Nintendo Switch.

? Price: USD 9.29 on Steam, USD 17.99 on the Nintendo eStore.
