WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

A new ship scrapping and recycling project at Damietta Port

Good afternoon, friends. This issue is packed with local and international news, which show no signs of letting up as we inch closer to the weekend.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

Egypt’s first ship scrapping and recycling project takes off: El Wehda Industrial Development Company signed an MoU with The Holding Company for Maritime and Land Transport to establish a new ship recycling project at Damietta Port, spanning 2 mn sqm, according to a Transport Ministry statement. The project, which is set to be the first of its kind in the Arab region and Africa, will recycle large, medium, and small ships, construct new vessels, and handle ship repairs for vessels up to 400 m long. The project also aims to produce 1.5 mn tons of scrap annually within five years, reducing reliance on imported scrap and supporting the local steel industry.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

Syria’s new interim prime minister Mohammed al Bashir hopes to rebuild Syria despite brutal FX rates and financial distress. Speaking to Italy’s Il Corriere della Sera, al Bashir acknowledged their poor financial standing, but promised to relieve mns of refugees and provide basic services to the Syrian population. Following Bashar al Assad’s fall, the EU has halted admitting displaced Syrians into their countries, giving refugees no option but to return home. But al Bashir remains determined to end his time in office — with a self-imposed deadline of 1 March — with Syria under better circumstances.

But Israel has given Syria no moment of reprieve, striking the country 500 times in the two days since Assad’s departure, with the aim of seizing and occupying Syrian land while the country tries to recover.

In the meantime, Syrian civilians are desperately search for loved ones who were forcibly disappeared by the Assad regime, likely thrown into torture camps. Forensic examiners have been trying to catalogue those who were killed in the inhumane prison network to help families identify their missing relatives. (Reuters | CNN | NYT)

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Egypt’s Year in Search wrap up is out

Google has released this year’s search trends, and Egypt’s are a mix of national pride, economic worries, and global curiosity. Add in worldwide searches for health scares, political drama, and entertainment hits.

The top spot in Egypt’s searches was The Olympics. Egyptians are tuning more into global events, and the Olympics were especially popular due to our athletes’ high turnout, and optimism from our results in the previous summer Olympics. The games struck a national chord as our athletes took to Paris grounds, with a few making it to the podium, and one — Ahmed El Gendy — making history by winning Egypt’s first gold medal in the Modern Pentathlon.

Economic concerns surprisingly only made it to second place, with the depreciation of the EGP taking center stage. It’s been a significant issue, leading to rising inflation — expected to drop back to single digits in 1Q 2025 — and lower purchasing power, worsened by external factors aka regional instability, declining Suez Canal revenue, and ongoing global economic challenges.

On the brighter side of things, Egyptians were excited about one economic aspect: The Ras Al Hikma project garnered the attention of many, showcasing Egypt’s developmental initiatives aimed at boosting tourism and infrastructure. These efforts signal a commitment to economic growth and modernization amid economic challenges.

If we expand our view to global trends, the data highlights a variety of interests across different regions. Aside from the Olympics — which dominated the searches in many countries — other trending topics varied based on local contexts. Health issues, such as Monkeypox, emerged on the global stage. Political events, leading with the US elections, continue to attract significant global attention. Meanwhile, entertainment — especially films and TV series — remained a consistent area of interest worldwide, with new releases sparking conversations across all social media platforms.

ON THE TUBE TONIGHT

What if your superpower was being powerless?

? Imagine a world where everyone gets a superpower at 18… except you. Extraordinary is humorous, chaotic, and a little heartbreaking. From flight to turning objects into PDFs, the series is filled with a weird variety of powers that reflects both the mundane and extraordinary struggles of adult life — and Jen is still waiting for her power in a world brimming with them.

Jen’s life is a mess. She (Máiréad Tyers) works at a costume shop run by a boss stuck in her childhood body, her love life is disastrous, and her flatmates — best friend Carrie (Sofia Oxenham) who summons the dead and Carrie’s boyfriend Kash (Bilal Hasna) who rewinds time — only add to her frustrations.

Jen’s powerlessness isn’t just literal, it’s metaphorical. She’s stuck while everyone else seems to be flying ahead. Whilst trying to save up money for a clinic that promises to unlock her powers, Jen deals with odd and overpowered characters, including a shape-shifting stray cat (Luke Rollason) with an unfortunate name.

It’s full of laughs and relatable moments for anyone who’s ever felt like they’re falling behind in life. Though the story drags at times, Jen's energy and the quirky world keep it fun with moments about figuring life out — perfect for next weekend’s binge.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can watch the series on Disney+ or catch the trailer on YouTube (runtime: 1:50).

EAT THIS TONIGHT

Get adventurous with your cinnamon rolls

? If you’re looking for a local gem that excels in sweet indulgences, you’ll love CnmnFactory. It has quickly gained a reputation for its delectable cinnamon rolls, offering a range of flavors that cater to all taste preferences.

One standout is the Cinnamon Pecan Roll. This roll was a treat, boasting a rich and nutty flavor. For those with a sweet tooth, adding extra caramel sauce is a must — it takes an already delicious roll to the next level with an indulgent, gooey sweetness that perfectly complements the crunchy pecans.

Cnmn Factory doesn’t stop at traditional flavors. They also offer twists like the Blueberry and Strawberry Cinnamon Rolls, both of which were fresh and added a fruity twist to the classic cinnamon roll experience.

Not every flavor hits the mark. The Classic Cinnamon Roll, while still enjoyable, didn’t quite match up to ones we’ve tried before. The flavor felt somewhat subdued compared to the boldness of the other rolls, so it might be worth exploring other options.

For those planning a gathering, Cnmn Factory offers packs of 20 Cinnamon Roll Bites. These are perfect for sharing with friends and family, allowing everyone to sample a variety of flavors in one convenient package.

WHERE TO FIND IT- Find it in 6th of October, Maadi, and Al Haram. You can also order it through Talabat or Elmenus.

Under the Lamplight

Coexisting with AI

? If you’re going to read one take on AI, let it be Ethan Mollick’s. The Wharton School professor — who specializes in innovation and entrepreneurship — has written a practical analysis of the short-term effects of AI that Kirkus Reviews describes as “an important road map through the AI labyrinth, written with authority and free of technojargon.”

Not a human, not a machine. The way to approach AI according to Mollick is to treat it not as a person and not as a computer, but as a completely separate being. A helpful one, but one that is likely to revolutionize much of what we’re familiar with in the workplace, in education, and even in our interpersonal relationships.

Disruption begets reorganization, for better or worse. While Mollick believes that, realistically, as AI becomes embedded in the daily workflow, it will help with organizational productivity on a large scale. But he also warns even experienced employees that their skills are likely to be devalued as a result, and warns managers to establish AI in the workplace as a tool, not a crutch.

Mollick uses real-world use cases and foreseeable scenarios to demonstrate the effects we can anticipate, instead of looking too far ahead and risking venturing into what we would consider science fiction. But one thing is true: current iterations of AI are the least sophisticated we’ll ever use.
