1.7 mn people were newly displaced within their own country in 1H2016, while 1.5 mn were forced to flee internationally, according to UNHCR’s Mid-Year Trends 2016 report. In total, there were 16.5 mn refugees in the world in 1H2016, slightly lower than the highs of 17.8 mn seen in 1992. More than half the new refugees in that period fled the war in Syria and most stayed in neighbouring Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon, and Egypt.
