WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

Energy from waste could get pricier

Good afternoon, all. It’s an oddly quiet day on the business front for what we hope to be the start of a calm business week.

THE BIG STORY TODAY-

Could energy from waste get pricier? The Environment Ministry is looking into raising the feed-in tariff rate for waste-to-energy plants — the set price that the government pays for the electricity they generate — in a bid to make the sector more attractive to investors, Waste Management Regulatory Authority consultant Khaled Elfarra told Enterprise. The proposed price increase would see the feed-in-tarrif rate rise to EGP 2.35/Kwh — the tariff rate hasn’t changed since it was set at EGP 1.40/Kwh in 2019.

What’s next? The proposed tariff increase has been sent to the Electricity Ministry and after it gives its greenlight the proposal will be forwarded to the cabinet, Elfarra added.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

The news slowdown has extended beyond Egypt, with no single story captivating the attention of the foreign press this afternoon. Among those making headlines:

#1- US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is expected to visit Israel today as the US and other mediators continue to push for all parties to accept an amended ceasefire proposal that would see Israel keep its troops stationed on Gaza’s border with Egypt, among others. Blinken will meet with senior Israeli officials as well as Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

#2- And on the front lines of the Russia-Ukraine war, Ukraine is moving to consolidate itspositions in the Russian border region of Kursk following its successful incursion into Russian territory. The Ukrainian air force has destroyed two bridges in the region, alongside Russian weapons depots and logistics hubs, in a bid to disrupt the country’s supply lines.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

When is being sick not being sick enough?

Gone are the days when calling in sick meant the difference between a day in bed and a day at work, The Financial Times notes. Remote work has blurred these lines, making it tough to determine whether employees are expected to power through from home or take a sick day. HR experts are concerned that this confusion leads to “presenteeism” — working while sick — and “leaveism” — using vacation days to cover for illness.

The option to work from home has blurred the line between working hours and downtime. With Covid-19 and other illnesses making a comeback, the importance of the boundaries are cropping back up. Ann Francke, CEO of the Chartered Management Institute, sums it up: “It’s the new age of ambiguity. Are you well enough to work? Are you ill enough to take time off? Who decides?”

Despite the wake of Covid, company guidelines are still unclear, and many workplaces haven’t updated their policies. Pre-pandemic, being sick enough to stay home automatically meant taking a day off to rest, but now people are asking themselves how sick you need to be to be unable to work at all, even from bed. According to the CIPD, a British association for human resource management professionals, more than half of employees have worked despite feeling unwell, often due to pressure — whether real or perceived — to perform.

Where does the responsibility lie? People and transformation director at the CIPD Amanda Arrowsmith says that previously, sick days were given to stop the spread of illness, not out of concern for an employee’s health. The solution? Francke advises managers to “create an environment that respects the employee’s needs to stay healthy and productive,” and for employees to be mindful of their judgment on whether or not their ailments allow them to work from home while taking care of their health.

EVs are all the rage right now. But if you’re thinking of a quick turnaround, they may not be the best option. Data shows that EVs depreciate the minute they’re driven out of the dealership.

Prepare for loss. In the UK, some EVs, including the Audi e-Tron GT, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq, and Tesla Model 3, lose around half of their value within the first year, according to data from Cap HPI.

Mileage isn’t the issue… The distance covered by the car doesn’t factor into its resale value. Experts give an example of a year-old Porsche Taycan 4S with 10k miles on the odometer fell from GBP 100.2k to GBP 50.7k. If it had covered 20k instead, the value would only have dropped by an additional GBP 2.6k, only an extra 2.6% of its original value.

…nor is age. If that same Porsche Taycan had been two years old instead, then the value would have dropped an additional GBP 4.1k, only 4.1% of its original value, according to data shared to Wired by Edmunds.

Secondhand supremacy. The significant depreciation, along with the fact that the batteries are beginning to last longer than initially expected, works in favor of savvy second hand buyers, who’ll then be able to get great deals on electric vehicles, according to Recurrent.

Gas-powered cars win in that department. Cap HPI data shows that in the UK, a gas-powered Audi Q7 55 holds about 42% more value after a year than the electric Audi e-tron 55, despite its higher initial cost. Even lower-value cars like the Volkswagen Golf exhibit a 46% higher resale value for their gas variants over electric models.

A dose of adrenaline and drama in One Fast Move

? ON THE TUBE TONIGHT-
(all times CLT)

Experience the high-octane world of motorcycle racing in One Fast Move. Gritty ex-soldier Wes (KJ Apa) has a passion for racing and a complicated past — the classic makings of a film that focuses on redemption and family… Plus a healthy dose of adrenaline.

The film kicks off with Wes getting into hot water after a reckless street race, landing him in military prison. Once freed, he’s on a mission to reclaim his life and find his estranged father, Dean (Eric Dane), a washed-up racer with more baggage than trophies. Dean, who’s busy drinking and racing in circles, begrudgingly takes Wes under his wing.

As Wes shows he’s got what it takes on the track, tensions rise with his father, and a romance with local diner waitress Camila (Maia Reficco) adds another layer of complication. The narrative follows a familiar trajectory: overcoming personal demons, battling a difficult relationship with a father figure, and culminating in a climactic race.

The film delivers on the basics — a fast-paced racing backdrop, a troubled hero, and familial strife. If you’re in the mood for a straightforward, if formulaic, sports drama and action, this film might hit the spot. And under delivers on others: The real dangers and drama of motorcycle racing are overlooked to serve the plot, and many have complained about the characters being too two-dimensional. These faults stop the film from being a gripping watch, but it may be perfect for people who want drama for the sake of drama.

WHERE TO WATCH- You can watch the film on Amazon Prime Video or watch the trailer (runtime: 2:08).

? EARS TO THE GROUND-

Ever wondered how common workplace dilemmas are tackled around the world? Rough Translation dives into this question among others, offering a fresh take on conversations we all recognize but often only see from our own perspective. Hosted by Gregory Warner, the podcast transports listeners to diverse corners of the globe, illuminating how similar issues are discussed differently depending on cultural context.

One standout episode, You're@Work: The Right Persona for the Job, delves into the intriguing concept of separating work and personal selves. Warner uses the Apple TV+ show Severance, where employees undergo a procedure to erase their work memories from their personal lives, as a springboard. The episode draws parallels between this fictional scenario and real-life experiences, exploring how professionals from various cultures navigate the divide between their professional and personal identities.

There’s even a segment that features the practice of using English nicknames in South Korean workplaces to flatten hierarchical structures. Warner speaks with Se Eun Gong, who explains how adopting these nicknames can transform workplace dynamics, making interactions less formal and potentially more egalitarian. The episode highlights stories of individuals who find that their work personas—whether through a name change or other means—can significantly impact their behavior and self-perception.

It challenges listeners to rethink their own practices and assumptions. With its engaging storytelling and thought-provoking content, it’s a must-listen for anyone curious about the intersection of culture and communication.

INSIDE INDUSTRY

Gov’t has taken major steps to support the industrial sector, what are they?

Whatever it takes to boost industry: The industrial sector is seeing unprecedented support from the state as it works to boost industrial growth which is translating into happier industrial players.

The end goal: Recent government efforts aim to streamline procedures, cut back on red tape, and provide more support for both local and foreign investors in the industrial sector, as part of a broader strategy to boost Egypt's industrial output and export capabilities.

Remember: The cabinet has presented President Abdel Fattah El Sisi with a comprehensive plan to boost the industrial sector, Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly said last week. The plan has three main objectives — enhancing the industrial investment environment to encourage the establishment of new factories and attract fresh investments, improving the quality of Egyptian products and increasing their competitiveness, reviving factories that shut off operations due to economic challenges and providing the necessary support for struggling factories.

MP NOW NEEDS TO SIGN OFF ON SHUTTING DOWN FACILITIES-

Step one: Madbouly said that industrial facilities now require the greenlight from him to shut down operations. The move would mean factories that have halted operations will need to once again kick off operations if not given the prime minister’s greenlight.

Why it matters: Many factories have drained their funds before even starting operations, either due to bureaucracy or current economic conditions, Mohamed El Bahy, board member at the Federation of Egyptian Industries, told Enterprise. Shutting down a facility means a lot of wasted resources, seeing as typically it would take around two years for a factory to be up and running from setting the foundation stone to kicking off operations.

The outcome: Reviving stalled facilities would increase the availability of raw materials and goods in the market, enhancing competition and exports, he added.

FAST TRACKING THE PROCESS-

Cutting the red tape: The move to have a single authority take care of all the necessary approvals to set up a facility will significantly speed up the process — initially investors had to receive approvals from 23 separate entities to set up a plant, a move which made the process of receiving the necessary licenses a months- or even years-long process, Samir Aref, head of the Tenth of Ramadan City Investors Association, told Enterprise.

Putting things on the fast track: Factories will be classified into two categories based on their risk levels and the period of their application process will depend on which category they fall into, Aref said. Low-risk factories will receive a preliminary license to immediately kick off construction until they receive the remaining permits. Meanwhile, high-risk factories will have to wait up to two weeks as the responsible authorities ensure safety and industrial security requirements are met.

The golden license effect: Industrial players had been calling for a conditions-free golden license with an expanded scope, El Bahy said, adding that the decision to fast track license approvals is far more attractive than the golden license.

Long-awaited decisions: Industry players have for years been calling for a way to speed things up after constant struggling with red tape, Bassim Youssef, a member of the Chamber of Engineering Industries, told us.

To sweeten the pot more: The Transport and Industry Ministry plans to launch a digital platform for industry within days. The platform will facilitate land allocation, allow manufacturers to digitally pick their desired plot, and grant building and operating licenses all in less than a week and in exchange a single fee.

LAND REMAINS AN ISSUE-

Land availability: Aref confirmed that the lack of affordable serviced land remains one of the biggest challenges facing local industry and foreign investment alike.

Work in progress: The state is working on expand the amount of industrial land available, Transport and Industry Minister Kamel El Wazir said, adding that land will be made available for all industrial investors starting from early September, with industrial land plots to be offered periodically every three months.

What's next? Sources previously confirmed to Enterprise that large areas of industrial land will be offered to investors through the industrial developer system — which allows private companies to develop land for industrial use. Last week, El Wazir said that the state will offer some 10 mn sqm of industrial land to investors under its plan to boost the sector in Sadat City, Borg El Arab, Sixth of October, Tenth of Ramadan, and Badr City.

Also planned: There is also a plan to allow manufacturers to directly secure land from the state for no charge and install utilities themselves by contracting with the utility provider of their choice.

Legalizing factory violations could help with the issue: One of the most important steps of supporting industry is the plan to legalize the status of factories built on agricultural land — last month El Wazir tasked the Industrial Development Authority with drawing up legislative amendments to legalize the status of any industrial institution built on agricultural land that is already licensed and operational. The move would result in a dip in demand for offered industrial land plots, El Bahy said.

ALSO ON THE AGENDA-

Tax breaks: The government is mulling over canceling property tax on factories, El Wazir previously said. But players want more, players told us that they are looking for additional tax breaks in the coming period.

WHAT DO INDUSTRIAL PLAYERS WANT-

Industry player want cheap financing: All the industry players Enterprise spoke to agreed on the need for more affordable financing, adding that the EGP 120 bn in subsidized loan s the Madbouly government has allocated to support industry and agriculture is not enough.

Investors want actions: Investors are waiting for the state to fulfill promises made, Aref said.

Refresher: The new cabinet intends to double down on finalizing a new national strategy for industry and trade competitiveness, with an emphasis on positioning Egypt as a hub for sustainable industry and trade. The initiative targets an annual growth of 31.2% in industrial output by FY 26-27 and USD 103.4 bn in total exports in the period between 2024 and 2026, and to USD 130 bn by FY 26-27.
