Unveiling the shadows of Arab true crime in Dark Minds. This docuseries is the first-of-its-kind produced by Al Sharq TV and SRMG and has recently made its debut on Netflix Middle East and North Africa. Spanning seven episodes it tackles shocking true crime stories that have rocked Arab cities both large and small. Unlike many Western crime documentaries that often sensationalized violence, this one aims to unfold the complexity and psychological motives behind these crimes.
The series navigates through decades and across six Arab countries — Tunisia, Lebanon, Iraq, Egypt, Jordan, and Morocco. The narrative journeys back to the 1980s, revisiting the chilling tale of a child murderer in Tunisia’s tranquil city of Nabeul. From there, it navigates through the decades, presenting stories of serial killers from Jordan in the 1990s and Beirut, Giza, and Kirkuk in the new millennium. Each episode carefully examines the societal pressures that have enabled these heinous crimes, revealing how performative piety and moral posturing can give criminals a veneer of respectability.
The documentary aims to understand — not justify — the motives of the perpetrators. It explores the psychological underpinnings of their actions, suggesting that a broken childhood often lies behind every criminal. Through intimate interviews with victims’ families and archival footage, which prompts introspection on parenting practices and societal norms, challenging viewers to learn from these dark tales.
It’s a provocative documentary that sheds light on the darkest corners of the human soul. It also challenges the reevaluation of justice systems, parenting practices, and societal norms, asking whether there is a way to summon light to such dark minds.
