The Mystery Guest has a familiar feel, it’s not a book that you’ve read. The book is second in the series, following The Maid, and is set in a five-star Regency Grand Hotel. The idyllic life of Molly Gray, the head maid, has been shattered when famous author J.D. Grimthorpe is found dead in the hotel’s tea room. A murder investigation ensues when Detective Stark enters the scene, and the hotel's reputation becomes at stake.
Sound familiar? We thought so too. The book is similar to our popular Ramadan TV drama series Grand Hotel, only with a few twists and turns, and a touch of modernity in characters.
The book has been met with some mixed feelings from critics and readers alike. Some critics called the continuation of the series unnecessary, but some champion it as a book that displays the “ superpower[s] of the pink-collared proletariat ” — those in care-oriented professions — as it falls to Molly to uncover the dirty truth.
