Egypt is expected to remain a “major importer” of US soybeans for the next five years, according to a report by the US Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) published in July. US soybean exports to Egypt were up 202% y-o-y between January and May, with forecasts seeing total soybean imports surpassing 1.75 mn tonnes this fiscal year, and 1.44 mn tonnes coming from the US. The increased demand for soybeans comes on the back of projects such as Cargill and Archer Daniels Midland new crushing facility in Borg El Arab, “which are doubling their crushing capacity” to produce oil, as well as the need for it in the food processing industry to boost the nutritional value of products such as bread and to manufacture animal fodder.
