LAST WEEK IN 3 MINS-

ECONOMY

#1- USD 20 bn tranche of Ras El Hekma funds land in state coffers:Abu Dhabi wealth fund ADQ delivered the second and final tranche of the Ras El Hekma funds on Sunday. The USD 20 bn tranche consists of USD 14 bn fresh inflows and USD 6 bn in the form of a previous UAE deposit at the Central Bank of Egypt.

#2- External debt inches up in 1H: Egypt’s foreign debt hit USD 168 bn during the first half of the current fiscal year, climbing by USD 3.3 bn from the end of fiscal year 2022-2023. But, we expect things to look different in the coming report, as USD 11 bn of our external debt will be written off thanks to the USD 35 bn Ras El Hekma agreement inked in March.

#3- Inflation cooled for the second month in a row: Broadly in line with analyst expectations, annual urban inflation fell to 32.5% in April on the back of slower food price increases as traders continued to price at a lower exchange rate than in the now-defunct parallel market. Food inflation slowed by a notable 4.5 percentage points to 40.5%, at least in part thanks to the state’s initiative it launched during Ramadan to trim commodity prices by up to 30%.

#4- The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has cut our growth forecast for 2024 to 3.9%, down 0.6 percentage points from its September forecast. However, the EBRD saved its largest forecast cut for the current fiscal year, which it now sees growing at 1.8 percentage points slower at 3.0%.

CAPITAL MARKETS

Enterprise sat down with Qalaa Holdings Chairman and Founder Ahmed Heikal to unpack Qalaa’s fresh plans to ease debt obligations: Qalaa Holdings has outlined a plan to shed USD 430 mn in foreign-currency debt. The mechanics of its plan weren’t immediately clear to everyone, so we spoke with Heikal this week to get the inside track on the transaction and why he thinks it’s good for shareholders.

DEVELOPMENT FINANCE

The IFC lined up USD 100 mn for MSMEs this week: The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has agreed to grant Banque du Caire USD 100 mn in financing to be on-lent to micro, small, and medium enterprises, and female entrepreneurs. This came during the IFC Regional Vice President for Africa Sérgio Pimenta’s three-day visit to Egypt.

It has also earmarked USD 50 mn to support entrepreneurs via a private equity fund: The IFC pledged to invest USD 50 mn in SPE PEF III — an SPE Capital-run private equity fund that focuses on mid-cap companies in Africa — to support entrepreneurs and create more jobs. At least a quarter of the fund’s capital will go to women entrepreneurs.

ENERGY

QatarEnergy to snap up stakes in two offshore exploration blocks: Qatari state-owned oil and gas company QatarEnergy is set to acquire a 40% working interest in ExxonMobil’s Cairo and Masry offshore concessions under a farm-in agreement inked by the two parties. ExxonMobil will retain the remaining 60% of the two concessions.

HEALTHCARE

New state-led healthcare investment incentives: The government has drawn up freshincentives for investment in healthcare projects across the country, with eligible projects able to secure golden licenses, exemptions from usufruct fees, and even the state helping cover training costs.

WHAT’S HAPPENING NEXT WEEK-

The Central Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee will meet on Thursday to review rates: Most analysts are yet to unveil their forecasts, but Goldman Sachs expects the CBE to cut rates by 200 bps at its next policy meeting to bring rates down after its 600 bps rate hike in March alongside the EGP float.

AROUND THE WORLD IN SEVEN DAYS-

Israel’s war on Gaza sadly topped the headlines for another week, with some 300k Palestinians on the move in Gaza after being forced out of Rafah by the Israeli army. “Many say they have nowhere to go,” wrote the New York Times in the understatement of the year.

WHILE IN BUSINESS NEWS- The US went on the offensive in the trade war with China, with the White House earlier this week announcing a raft of tariff increases on USD 18 bn worth of Chinese imports that will see tariffs on Chinese EVs will quadruple to 100%, those on lithium-ion EV batteries to more than triple to 25%, those on solar cells to double to 50%.

AND IN TECH NEWS- The Google I/O developer conference kicked off this week, with the Mountain View company announcing its new AI assistant Project Astra. Think of Project Astra as your personal assistant who can help you find the keys you misplaced or explain a complicated piece of code. Project Astra can interact with users through text, audio, and video. The tech giant also unveiled its plans to start rolling out AI search summaries to its users, starting in the US.

ChatGPT4 just got an upgrade, and the result is eerily similar to Scarlett Johansson in the movie Her: Dubbed Chat-GPT4o by OpenAI, the latest edition of the AI tool has already set the internet on fire for sounding exactly like Scarlett Johansson in Her, a movie in which a character falls in love with an AI voice assistant. You chat with GPT4o using your voice — and it can turn on your device’s camera to have a look around if it’s relevant to your ‘conversation.’ And unlike the current incarnation of Siri, it appears pretty seamless.

Also putting OpenAI in the headlines was news that its co-founder and chief scientist isout. Ilya Sutskever is leaving the organization six months after he participated in a palace coup that saw CEO Sam Altman briefly kicked out of the hot AI startup.

THE ENTERPRISE GUIDE

Spots to brunch, munch, and more

Seeking the best brunch that Cairo has to offer? If yes, grab your friends, family, or co-workers, because we’ve curated a vast list of places all over Cairo that’ll whip up old favorites—like foul and falafel or good ol’ pancakes and waffles — but also familiar dishes elevated to new heights.

But we know it’s not just the food that matters but also the ambiance. Each place has unique aesthetics and music that’ll give you the best brunch experience — and the best part is that it can be enjoyed all week long.

NOTE- All prices included are before VAT and service charge.

#1- BAXTERS:Looking for the ultimate European brunch, look no further than Baxters, a sumptuous Anglo-Saxon kitchen and restaurant located in O1 Mall where their dishes range from fluffy berry Danish waffles with homemade mixed berry compote and whipped cream to Greek-style poached eggs paired with avocados, Greek feta, cherry tomato mix drizzled with herbed olive oil. Their ambiance is almost communal made for all types of groups but their music can go unnoticeable.

MUST EAT: The turkey and cheese toastie (EGP 155), the secret to its deliciousness is its walnut basil pesto sauce.

MUST DRINK: Mixed berry smoothie (EGP 144), but be warned the portion is not to be underestimated.

PRO TIP: Not only are breakfast options available until 4pm but your plant-based friends can rejoice because they have vegan/vegetarian-friendly options. Unfortunately, there is no reservation system, they operate on a ‘first come-first serve’ basis — they do get crowded — so we suggest going as early as possible or you can opt to wait around 30 minutes to one hour.

PRICE RANGE: Prices start from EGP 125 to EGP 320.

If you’re keen on their general dining, check out our review here.

#2- BERRO’S BRASSERIE: Inside the newly modern mall The Nox in New Cairo is the sleek modern-retro restaurant Berro’s Brasserie, where you can enjoy a truly five-star brunch surrounded by minimalist interiors. Choose between ratatouille ala shakshuka or croque madame tartine with truffle mornay and smoked ribeye before turning your attention to the desserts, which includes dishes like french toast and buttermilk pancakes.

MUST EAT: If you’re aiming for a hearty meal opt for the BEC Bagel (EGP 230) similar to an American burger but minus the beef patty and make it breakfast. For a lighter option, have the Greek Eggs (EGP 245) — which is similar to shakshuka paired with Kolouri (a Greek sesame bread ring).

MUST DRINK: This might sound basic but their coffee (EGP 45-102) is not one to miss, along with their other drinks.

PRO TIP: There are outdoor and indoor seating options but if you prefer some light music we prefer staying indoors. As for reservations, there's no need, you can walk in — but be sure to be there before it gets crowded. But good news: Their breakfast ends at 2pm.

PRICE RANGE: Prices start from EGP 75 to EGP 305.

If you end up staying till lunch, check out our review here.

#3- RATIOS UNDERGROUND: We all know the famed rustic Ratios bakery, but now you get to savor their pastry goodness and more in their new location that’s also in Maadi — but like you guessed it’s underground. The rustic decor, smell of fresh pastries or bread, and natural sky lighting makes up the whole ambiance of the place.

MUST EAT: For brunch purposes, we suggest ordering their compound butter board (EGP 150) with a selection of garlic and herb to salted honey butter, paired with any of their other breakfast options.

PRO TIP: Reservations are a must before showing up through their online reservation system, but if you’re worried about parking — don’t fret — they have a nearby garage where you can park. As for the kiddos they have their own minuscule versions of the dishes.

PRICE RANGE: Prices start from EGP 150 to EGP 320.

If you want to get an idea on their pastries and oven goodness, check out our review here.

#4- THE TAP: Spacing out on both ends of Cairo — in Zayed and New Cairo — is The Tap, a destination that is widely known for their gastropub dishes from double smashed wagyu beef burger to shrimp tacos. But during the weekend you can attend their brunch event, filled with good food, vibes and live performers every Friday and Saturday from 4-9pm at both branches.

MUST EAT: Their famous wings with honorary mentions to three flavors: Nero, Mango Habanero, and Garlic Parmesan (EGP 290-480) — paired with their Loaded Nachos (EGP 340) is a craving worth satisfying.

PRO TIP: Reservations are to be made prior through their Facebook page — depending on which branch Zayed or New Cairo.

PRICE RANGE: Prices start from EGP 180 to EGP 980.

#5- DUCHESS:This peculiarly named restaurant in New Cairo, has even more peculiar dishes on their menu that gives you an edge to normal brunch — like Oxtail benny which is made up of Oxtail pulled beef with poached eggs and avocado paste paired with Hollandaise sauce.

MUST EAT: We went for the Chicken or Egg (EGP 330), a panko fried chicken filet with roast potatoes, sunny egg and avocado paste. We also added the Sriracha caviar (EGP 25) which gave it a spicy kick to the crunch.

MUST DRINK: To balance out the savouriness we ordered the Salted Caramel Latte (EGP 130).

PRICE RANGE: Prices start from EGP 190 to EGP 330.

#6- GRANITA:Tucked away in the island of Zamalek and Arkan plaza sits Granita occupying the courtyard of All Saints Cathedral. With equal parts elegance and quirkiness — it is a home away from home. The all-day breakfast menu incorporates both Middle Eastern and Western ingredients like the Egyptian roumy cheese melted in ciabatta bread or the classic BLT with basturma — and many more options to choose from.

MUST EAT: Their breakfast plates are a must-try giving you three options to choose from: American, Turkish, and British (EGP 190-350) — but if you want to save on the splurging we suggest going for the Turkish breakfast, it’s made for two. But whatever you pick their hash browns are a must.

MUST DRINK: Their Vietnamese coffee (EGP 80) is not one to miss, sweet and you get the caffeine kick.

PRO TIP: Weekdays are relatively not crowded but you’ll surely have to call and reserve if you’re planning to go on the weekend. But on the plus side, their breakfast ends at 1:30pm.

PRICE RANGE: Prices start from EGP 90 to EGP 350.

If you’re keen on their general dining, check out our review here.

#7- BLOOMS AND BEANS: Brunch and botanical, what better way to spend your early mornings. Whilst they might not have specific brunch menus they do have the dishes and ambiance that will serve the experience. What’s a brunch without bagels and eggs, and that they have. If that doesn't float your boat you can always dip into the sandwiches, and we recommend their signature roast beef ciabatta.

MUST EAT: Ever had a salmon and cream cheese croissant with dill mustard sauce? It was worth (EGP 240) every bite.

MUST DRINK: There wasn’t much that caught our attention but we opted for the pink lemonade (EGP 85) in this hot weather, tangy and sweet.

PRO TIP: Like we said it has a botanical side, meaning you can treat yourself by buying a bouquet or an arrangement for your house as you leave.

PRICE RANGE: Prices start from EGP 175 to EGP 245.

If you’re interested in their general dining, check out our review here.

#8- BAKE MY DAY: Straight from the heart of Amsterdam, nestled in not one, but two vibrant spots in New Cairo — Cairo Festival City Mall and Zia Mall — this restaurant serves up a menu influenced by Dutch, Belgian, Moroccan, and Indonesian flavors. It’s like taking a culinary trip around the world without ever leaving your seat — whether you're craving some authentic Moroccan breakfast (Moroccan pancakes) and tea or Dutch grilled sausage pancakes.

MUST EAT: If you want to evade the normal breakfast options, skip to the Moroccan pancake page and try out the Nordic smoked salmon and cream cheese dish (EGP 425) but we suggest swapping out the cream cheese with goat cheese.

MUST DRINK: Again in this hot weather we suggest their ice teas, especially the peach or passion fruit (EGP 120).

PRO TIP: There’s no need to reserve, but we must point out that whatever you choose to order or whether you stay on for lunch we strongly recommend ordering their Belgian fries.

PRICE RANGE: Prices start from EGP 220 to EGP 430.

If you’re interested in their general dining, check out our review here.

WHAT ARE YOU UP TO THIS WEEKEND?

They may not have Liam Neeson’s particular set of skills, but these kidnapped girls have the guts

? AT THE MOVIES-

This gripping thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.Escape is an emotional rollercoaster following the story of ten trafficked women trying to escape from their abductors.

The girls were just trying to go on vacation. The story starts with the main characters Karla and Lucy at a resort on vacation before they are abducted and taken to a group of women that had experienced the same terror. They later lead the group into developing their escape plan and the events begin to unfold.

The story isn’t exactly new. The “kidnapped and trying to escape” storyline is becoming a classic in the action/thriller genre at this point, which has caused the movie to be a bit predictable. There isn’t anything exactly groundbreaking about it but it does present strong acting and a suspense-filled sequence of events.

The characters are quite compelling. Directed by Howard J. Ford and starring Karla (Sarah Alexandra Marks) and Lucy (Sophie Rankin), the movie presents a diverse array of well-developed characters, each with their own unique backstory that lead them to that situation. The actors brought depth and authenticity to their roles, which gave the audience an emotional appeal.

The escape journey was long and inspiring. As the women navigate their way through their plan, truth is unraveled, backstories are shared, and the details of their captivity become clear. Friendships are tested, resilience is portrayed, and the human spirit is clearly reclaimed.

WHERE TO WATCH- Catch the movie at Cairo Festival City, Golf City, and Sea Cinema Arabella. Watch the trailer here (watch trailer, runtime: 1:55).

? FROM THE BOOKSTORE-

Embarking on a journey of self-discovery in The Wildest Sun. The story follows Delphine Auber, a young aspiring writer living in postwar Paris who claims to be the daughter of the legendary Ernest Hemingway.

Forced to leave her home following a tragic event, Delphine seizes the opportunity to search for her long-lost father. Her quest takes her from Paris to Harlem, Havana, and Key West, as she yearns for her father’s approval and grapples with her own identity amidst the myths surrounding her upbringing.

It’s a bildungsroman across several continents. It explores themes of identity and self-discovery through Delphine’s metaphorical journey. Her ambition as a writer drives her across continents, shedding light on the lengths individuals go to fulfill their dreams. The narrative also examines the power of legends, as Delphine’s perception of her father shapes her own narrative — highlighting the influence of iconic figures on personal mythologies.

Throughout her travels, Delphine encounters vibrant communities in Harlem and learns about cultural richness, while exploring the diverse landscapes and unique stories of Havana and Key West. The Wildest Sun delves into the theme of family and acceptance, challenging notions of idealized parentage and highlighting the uniqueness of individual journeys.

The narrative combines historical and cultural elements with the personal quest for self-discovery, resulting in a poignant and thought-provoking story that will be difficult to put down.

You can find it atCherry Blossom Books.

? HOT AND FRESH OUT OF THE KITCHEN-

Good food, great music, and French culinary tradition come together at TheBrasserie. Brought to us by the same crew behind The Tap and Brunch and Cake, The Brasserie is a classier joint for a good meal and a refreshing drink that would be ideal for a date or a post-closing dinner.

Don’t miss their sea bass carpaccio. The fresh fish coupled with the balsamic pearls was a joy on the palate. The grilled tiger prawns were succulent and a classic hit, but you might be excited about your next main course as you’ll still be hungry.

Their main courses are lovely but don’t forget the sides. We had a go at the brisket and it was buttery but certainly not for sharing. The Duck Confit is another must-have — the melt-in-your-mouth duck and sweetness of the orange and carrot puree are not to be missed.

If you can manage to have more room in your stomach, then don’t miss on their chocolate fondant, which tastes as amazing as it sounds. The burnt butter ice cream was as innovative as it was delicious.

PRO TIP: Reservations are a must, especially during the weekends when they have a live band performing English-Arabic fusion of some of our favorite hits from the 70s to the 2000s.

PASS THE CONTROLLER

A new anger-fueled take on your average shooter

Forget your typical shooter, Children of the Sun is akin to John Wick with a grudge against a cult. Run-and-gun action is a thing of the past — in Children of the Sun , you are THE GIRL, a vengeful warrior on a warpath against a sinister cult. Your goal? Kill every last cultist until you reach THE LEADER.

Instead of just aiming and shooting, you control every single bullet — á la Wanted —, manipulating its trajectory in slow motion as you line up eliminations. Each level is full of cultists, either patrolling, chatting, or blissfully unaware of their impending doom at your hands. The challenge comes not from dodging and evading but planning your shots to account for ricochets, environmental objects, and the cultists’ unpredictable movements. A well-aimed bullet can trigger a chain reaction that takes down more than a few enemies in just one shot.

While the core gameplay loop is undeniably satisfying, it may feel slightly repetitive if you’re playing in long bouts. The narrative is intriguing — you discover more about, not just the cult, but yourself as you play along — but it is told through brief comic panels instead of cutscenes. That may not be everybody’s cup of tea, but we think it works well within the striking and experimental style of the game.

Our biggest issue: The game is one of the shorter ones we’ve played, but it comes at a fair price. It doesn’t feel rushed or mis-paced — it’s a focused experience, not an epic campaign. If you’re seeking a fresh take on the average shooter, Children of the Sun is the next game for you.

? Rating: 9/10 on Steam, 81% on Metacritic. Check out the trailer (watch trailer, runtime:1:09).

⌛ Hours of gameplay: 4-5 hours.

? Platforms:Steam for PC.

? Price: USD 7.99.
